Is there any reason 2048x2048 was settled on as the maximum size for webms on 4chan? Why even have a maximum resolution at all, so long as it comes in under 3MiB? I can't imagine it's a security thing, so it must be for optimization reasons—but there's no server-side encoding/decoding as far as I'm aware. Is it just a random "good enough" value?

this plays fine on firefox over here https://a.pomf.cat/kcavpq.webm

Maybe a hard limit of 10k pixels would be reasonable for that purpose, but I don't see any reason not to allow at least 4k so long as it fits in under the size restriction (which should really be higher but I can understand wanting to save bandwidth)

You are the anime industry's version of low income jailbreak nerds with used macs and iphones that never buy anything off the app store, therefore not giving apple a single cent. You are like a windows user who pirates everything.

You can't amass an army of brainless consumerist otaku without creating a few worthless piratefags. But it's fine, if you took away their ability to pirate, they wouldn't watch anime anyways. And you're still useful, since like a microfag, you can get other people into anime/MS-specific data formats so they might potentially buy something.

Anime is uncommon in not only encouraging antisocial behaviour and unrealistic standards, but also being so perverted and unusual by default (heavy with themes of pedophilia, incest, and other fetishes) that normal people are repulsed by anyone who likes it. The social isolation of the otaku is essential to anime's profitability. By making their market more niche, more alone, more obsessed, and poorer in second and third options, prices can be justifiably driven through the fucking roof.

As an example of why large resolution webms would be useful, the original screenshot this was made from—at the same resolution!—is nearly ten megabytes. Imagine if we could do this with even larger images, how much bandwidth could be saved!

>>
>>54058734
It looks like this by the way https://a.pomf.cat/vdxeci.webm
>>
>>54057120
Because it is easier to settle on something. I would much rather have the max dimensions for something and move from there. I can't speak for 4chan, but I would guess with the code base the dev can't be shitted to figure screen size for CSS or something.

It has to generate a thumbnail but i doubt you could do any harm with that, i don't think ffmpeg would struggle with creating a 20k x 20k thumbnail
>>
>>54058937
Oh right I forgot about the jpeg thumbnails. That may also explain the lack of vp9 support. they should really fix that since it's way more efficient
>>
>>54058937
But would it struggle to create a million x million thumbnail? Get a few bots uploading these and you potentially have an effective DDoS attack with far fewer bots than any other method.

Also fuckhuge webm dimensions would probably crash browsers.
