Guy with choppy mpc playback here.
I downloaded the 32 bit version and it seems to work fine. Don't know what the difference is anyway. I also did a scan with malwarebytes and it found a few viruses and hundreds of other crap. Removed those, don't know if that helped but I thought I should mention it. Kinda want to try 64 bit again to see if it's fixed now.

I don't know, I'm not good with computers. ;_;

When i play mp4 files VLC keeps shitting itself, basically i get a lot of occasional audio stutter and when the file is higher quality/res the whole screen is filled with artifacts sometimes while the audio keeps going and this takes like 5 secs to go away again... How to fix?

This computer retard here, reinstalled the 64 bit version and yeah no problems, thank god.

So I have a new stupid question.
Can viruses make your computer slow or generally cause problems with certain programs?
I thought it was just a security thing? It must have been the virus, all I did was run the scan, remove viruses, restart and bam, it works fine now. I must say I didn't notice anything wrong with my pc except for the video choppyness, games and shit all ran fine.

I also had only two or three viruses but hundreds of "potentially unwanted programs" I think it called them.

If you're looking for the best price/performance ratio, I'd recommend using Blender (FOSS) and DaVinci Resolve (free as in beer) in tandem. Maybe Audacity too, depending on what it is you're editing. If you're looking for the simplest humanly possible free program, try HitFilm Express. My personal favorite is Vegas Pro, but of course it's prohibitively expensive..

I'm Frankensteining a new desktop together and as I'm someone who buys hardware from a brick and mortar store the clerk warned me about old power supplyers and how they can ruin brand new motherboards and graphics cards. Is he just scamming me or should I buy a new 800 watt power supply?

Part of the reason why I have to rebuild my computer is because my motherboard would beep 4 times when trying to power up and my graphics card and processor are outdated.

The starter made an error here, as she clearly moves before the gun goes off judging by the other sprinters reactions. He should've fired it again to signal a false start. Judging by the fact no one is wearing sprint spikes, this is a non-competitive event, which may be why the starter is a fuck-up.

I'm going to live in a dorm for university next fall and I'm guessing the best way to keep playing vidya is to buy a "gaming" laptop. Is there common knowledge on here about which laptops are good and bad? I obviously don't care to buy a memebook pro or any mac related laptops. What is a decent laptop that will be able to play games like csgo and league but won't break the budget?
>>
>>54058907
Sounds like an igpu would be enough, but the oven trick might work if you want to fix it.

Take off all the plastics you can, clean off thermal paste, put it in the oven for 170-200 degrees celcius for 8-12 minutes.

My 570 had artifacts and lines across the screen, but this fixed it.

It softens and reflows the solder.

Your card is already dead so it's not like you'll lose more if it doesn't work.

Ah right, that old trick. I remember they fixed Xbox 360s like that.

You're right there's nothing to lose since the card's already dead. So I should take the cooler fan + heatsink array off, anything else? Wouldn't the PCIE power ports, which are plastic, melt?

Dual-booted Thinkpad x230 with W8.1 and Debian here. I've been primarily a Linux user for the last 4 years so I'm rusty on my Windows troubleshooting skills.

Linux handles sleep/hibernation fine, but for the handful of times I've needed to boot into my 8.1 install, it's unusable after slp/hib. For lack of a better term, it stutters (freezes for half a second every 2 seconds) and I have to reboot. Anybody have suggestions for troubleshooting? I just need somebody to point me in the right direction here.

go on craigslist and buy the first 7970 or 960 you can find for ~$130 and you should be fine, or 760/280 if you're on an even tighter budget

you'd be better off saving that $64 ($70 with tax) and using integrated 2bh. $64 is the difference between a 390 and 390x (nearly at least)

My desktop is all fucked up. When the computer loads windows the desktop will be all black on my main screen and fine of my second, this is fixed by dragging a window around the screen so that it's all 'updated' or just maximizing something. You'll also notice the after images of my taskbar as it auto hides. I also get other strange visual bug when I full screen a game if I have another program open on my other window it sometimes blacks out the program window or shows an after image of a window that was open there previously but isn't any more. I've tried googling around in the past but it's such a strange problem that I haven't found much. Does anyone know what this is called or what might be causing it?

I've had this problem for a few years now and it's stayed with me through three graphics cards. I have two screens, windows (always the same installation and it's very old) and have had various AMD cards currently 380.

Friend told that it's likely GPU because Dark Souls III runs like ass while Dark Souls II runs really smoothly.

Same friend told me to buy these for best results.

I am hardware illiterate. I currently have no understanding of what GPU names or numbers mean, so I want to get as much input as possible before making such a large purchase.

So in my many years of torrenting I finally fell for an actual, visible virus. It's hijacked my browser homepage. Now I have uninstalled the program it installed, I've changed my google chrome settings and reset them to default for good measure, and I've changed my windows internet options settings, but I still have my homepage forced to some bullshit search engine. There's no fishy processes running, and I'm kind of at a loss as to how to fix this, short of reinstalling Windows since I'm not quite ready to do that.

I looked up this fake search engine and of course the first result was homepage hijacking, and that just recommended what I've already done, check the shortcut to make sure it's not linked to the homepage, check the internet options, and check the browser settings and extensions, all of which I've done.

Computer ramps up to 100% CPU usage at the drop of a hat if I start doing a lot. It happens when I try to watch a video while having chrome open to anything, or when I'm trying to load a bunch of tabs. Task manager and resource monitor tells me that google chrome or vlc suck up all the cpu when this happens. This is a virus, isn't it?
When I have windows update turned on (it's disabled now) it sucks up around 70% of the memory, what causes that?

Start with use case first. What are you using it for? That should drive what you upgrade.

RAM's cheap but if it's a glorified word processor, why bother? Same goes for your GPU in that case. For other uses, different answers.

If you truly wiped it out, then you might just have to change your search engine in your settings now.

If you wanna be sure it's gone, run rkill, then malwarebytes, then combofix. Shouldn't be too hard to go find those programs. First one kills any processed that would get in the way of malwarebytes and such I believe. Malwarebytes is the heavy lifter and I think combofix is the final cleanup that might not even be needed.

GNU/Linux is like most other unix-like operating systems. Windows is completely different on the other hand.

Windows isn't case-sensitive for example. It also doesn't have built-in manuals or a package manager. You have to randomly search the web to find your software. The installers are annoying to use and very bloated, coming with all the dependencies they need, even if you already have them from installing something else. This is why .exe files get so big sometimes. Also, despite the Windows install being huge, it actually has terrible out of the box hardware support comparatively. I think this might mean that the space is not being taken up by the NT kernel.

I'm not too much of an expert on Windows despite using it most of my life, so it might be best to go find a book on it. That's another funny thing, despite everyone thinking Windows is easy to use, it's actually quite difficult to use and no one knows what they're doing with it. You'd be amazed how much you learn about GNU/Linux just using it for a single day.
>>
>>54064449
you can use non-default ports as well as having the outside port and inside port be different (so even if someone went for port 22 hoping to ssh into your root account you can have it redirect to a different port like 25565 for minecraft).

Another thing I have heard is people closing all ports except the ssh port and then using an ssh tunnel to get everything else through. ssh is inherently quite secure (it's short for secure shell if you weren't aware), so this seems like a neat idea to me.

If the port you're talking about is just for your bittorrent client, I don't think they could do much besides fuck with your torrents if they were able to get past the login.

Using the terminal is very easy. For example if you installed Ubuntu and wanted Chrome afterwards, you just do
apt-cache search chrome
to search for chrome and then
sudo apt-get install chrome
to install it (if it's called chrome, that is.)

If you ever need to know how to use a CLI program, just type 'man' before the name of the program to access the manual. You can also use the 'apropos' command to search through all manuals and then see which manual has something relevant to your keyword.

I actually don't know of any distros that come with Chrome, but I can tell you almost nothing still needs flash.

CPU bottlenecks are extremely rare. Even with an i3 you're not going to get them from video games mostly likely. With an i7, overclocked or not you're definitely not getting bottlenecked.

You say you're getting 300fps.. Did you want higher? You literally can't see the difference if it is above the refresh rate of your monitor, you know. You're actually just making your card use extra power for no reason. This is why people often limit their FPS on purpose.

CS:GO likely caps at 300 if you're just complaining that it stops there.
