Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

I'm running gentoo and I really enjoy tweaking my kernel.
I'm just wondering, are there any barely noticeable mistakes that are common for newbies when configuring their kernel? e.g. setting cpu frequency scaling to userspace and then forgetting to set up userspace programs.

Oh and I commonly find myself browsing the arch wiki when I troubleshoot, are there any other distros with such an extensive documentation?

It sure is! Fedora is pretty good too but takes a little customizing, so maybe you could leave Fedora to try out later on when you know more. You might want to wait 1 week for Ubuntu 16.04 to be released. It will be released on the 21st. Good luck.

They have a pretty nice policy about nonfree software, buy why not removing that last kernel bit to be a freetard distro?

I would personally seriously encourage the use of the Ubuntu "flavor" GNOME 3, which does not have the default Unity desktop environment that a lot of people hate. Unity's not neccessarily ugly, it's just very alien and can be off-putting. GNOME is more akin to linux. Consider Mint with the Cinnamon DE.

But yes, ubuntu is my go-to due to its ease of use and wide support.

Loosely GNU/Linux - since I'm running Debian with just ufw on default settings (because I don't really know what I'm doing)

When logging into public Wi-Fi (coffee-shops, guest wifi, etc) what precautions need to be taken to ensure safe browsing? Can you protect yourself somehow or are you extremely vulnerable with no way around it?

Thanks for your time friends
>>
>>54052919
>Debian with just ufw on default settings
Uninstall it and install a hardened version. If you don't have SSP and other security features enabled your system is literally more vulnerable than Windows devices.
>>
>>54052900
It's common knowledge that windows is one of the most commonly targeted OSes for viruses and the like. Almost every OS can be made secure/insecure, but generally speaking, linux distributions are more robust and secure.

>>54052919
A firewall does not stop people from listening in. Wi-Fi is inherently insecure, but I suppose a VPN to your home computer would be more secure. Can anyone confirm that?
>>
Can someone post their Gentoo USE flags?
>>
>>54052792
>>54052900
Honestly if you need convincing, chances are you're better off staying in Windows if you're comfortable with it.

IF, however, you are uncomfortable with it due to your own experience or to raised doubts such as its security and its spying on users, then by all means feel free to stick around and ask more questions friend

On the games-side: fortunately Gaben and other personalities are pushing for a huge library of games to become available on Linux, they're already making huge advances. Also the advent of Vulkan API for GPU's is HUGE news, because it means Microsoft can't shackle developers to DirectX. Everyone can see the smoke and can tell MS is up to no good in the near future for vidya.

For games I'm pretty well covered on linux with Steam, GOG, and the ocassional Wine. I happen to have a small Windows partition still left on my hard drive for those recent games that just don't play nice with Linux yet, like Rainbow Six Siege or the Witcher 3. All of my work and everything else is on Linux though

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Not at all.

My old folks use it. And they're 60 and don't know anything about computers. That should tell you enough

It's always a good idea to start with a beginner friendly 'distro' (short for distribution) that will automate most things and give you sane defaults. Recommended ones to look into are any flavor of Ubuntu and Linux Mint

There are literally webms that can give attackers remote code execution if you're using Firefox on Linux. If you have SSP the browser will crash and PAX will give you a nice little notice that "/usr/bin/firefox" or whatever tried to smash the stack. Just because you're on a "safe" network doesn't mean you should be running an OS that doesn't have basic security features.
>>
>>54053035
Your data is out in the open. No, there's really no way to stop it. Encryption is supposed to help, but in reality, WiFi encryption is usually easily defeated (or in the case of a coffee place, bypassed by simply asking for the password. if they're there, set up before you are, there's no way around it) However, the risk of attack is kind of low. Then again, it's fairly easy to do such an attack.

Whenever a company (Microsoft) or someone else can run arbitrary code on your computer without your permission, it's not your computer anymore. This goes from mandatory forced updates to ads to anything they want to shove down your throat. And you can't do anything about it, because it's THEIR operating system and they get to control it, and therefore you.

GNU/Linux offers you the chance of actually owning your computer. No surprises. You have complete control over it - what it does, what it has on it, when it updates, IF it updates, everything.

It offers you complete control, where Microsoft is using you as their product.

You won't be shackled in proprietary PRISON any longer. When you use a proprietary program, you don't control your computer. The company that made that program controls you. You need to be able to know exactly what that program is doing, otherwise you have no clue. Even if you can't read source code, other people can, and someone will speak up if they find something weird in it. That is freedom. The freedom to know, the freedom to share, the freedom to control.

Everything. If you can run arbitrary code then it's trivial to make a system() call and run any command available as a normal user.

Unix pipes are kind of a big deal. It can do that and a looot more than cmd. Also the ability to set your own aliases, and very easy and memorizable commands that improve your workflow

If you become enough of a terminal wizard, you can get your job done x10 faster than when just clicking on some window.

Of course, this is not needed. You can just work like you're used to as well

Hey guys, absolute beginner here, i'm having an issue running arch on a virtual machine. I have my account set up it seems like and I can get arch to run, I just cant get a windows manager to run. Closest I've gotten leads to a arch to hang on this screen forever instead of starting gnome.
>>
Guise how do I make redshift autostart with the system?
>>
>>54053240
Too many things to list, to be honest.

Do note that while some video games do work in Linux, and some work quite well, most modern games will not work or work very poorly. But using gpu-passthrough and virtualization, you can run a copy of windows within linux with little performance drop. This assumes that you have a spare, dedicated GPU, and hardware in general that supports virtualization. This is something I'm aiming to get in the future.
>>
>>54053326
Why are you installing ArchLinux when you're an absolute beginner?
Well, at least it's on a virtual machine...

Everytime i connect a second monitor to my laptop the wallpaper gets messed up on the second monitor, so i need to reapply it everytime. Is there some solution to make it reapply itself of some sort so the wallpaper becomes normal when connecting a second monitor. I'm using arch with i3 and catalyst drivers and feh as my wallpaper manager
>>
>>54053340
from what I heard the documentation is a lot simpler. Do you think I should switch to gentoo or mint? I'm not interested in Ubuntu.
>>
>>54053240
>>54053336
Like the anon said above, GPU passthrough is a thing - but it's still very much an arcane procedure to undertake, specially for a newbie.

Honestly you're better off finding out if the games you want to play are on Linux. If they are, fantastic, you're set. If some aren't and you really want them, you can use Wine in Linux. If they're relatively new however, you might want to keep a small partition of Windows for those. That's what I do for very new releases that aren't getting Linux support
>>
>>54053284
And this is a problem inherent to the system, rather than firefox?
>>
>>54053358
You heard wrong.

The ArchWiki is majestic, sure thing. But it's only majestic if you know what you're doing already, for the most part. It tends to assume you know a lot more than what you actually know when you're a newbie.

And Gentoo is even farther down the deep end than Arch for a beginner m8.

Linux Mint is a good derivative of Ubuntu. I used it for a few months before switching to Debian, once I was comfortable. There's nothing wrong with Ubuntu though, some would argue it's better than Mint. What turned you off from it? The Unity interface? Because if so I encourage you to also consider other alternative Ubuntu flavors such as Ubuntu GNOME, Xubuntu, etc
>>
>>54053376
>rather than firefox
If you're trusting EVERY SINGLE APPLICATION on your system to keep you safe, then you're fucked. There is literally no drawback to having SSP and other system hardening features, and it turns compromising a system from a skiddy command to an alphabet agency project.
>>
>>54053327
I think this varies from DE to DE (or WM). What DE are you using?
>>

>>

>This makes me want to install Linux...
You'll install it, play around for 15 minutes and go back to your games on Windows. No offense.
>>
>>54053409
But you can rebuild firefox itself with SSP, no? Rather than having to run out and build from scratch.
>>

...you can use literally any DE or WM on Ubuntu, man.

Go browse the flavors of Ubuntu and see if you like any of the DE's. If you're bent on trying WM's, then go Xubuntu and then install your tiled window managers, since it will have way less bloat than Ubuntu, Kubuntu or Ubuntu GNOME

Yes, but security is all about layers. Build layers of security on top of each other and the bad guys will have to break through all of them to get what they want. With Linux, if you use a distro like Gentoo that compiles everything anyways, you can have SSP for every application as well as for the kernel, and updating applications requires no extra work.

Epiphany uses 18M + 70M for one tab (4chan/g) for me, while Chrome uses 145M + 10*(50M) (10 processes with 3 tabs open) + 125M (gpu-process). Idle cpu usage is less with Epiphany than with Chrome.

Is my browsing experience better with Epiphany? Unless I'm shitposting on 4chan, then no. Epiphany has higher cpu usage when opening tabs (which causes my fan to spin up and makes noise) and I can't use things like Google Docs with it, because it's not supported. got a bit of an issue lads
So I've got 2 partitions currently, 1 that has KDE Neon installed (sda1), and another with RemixOS on it (sda3) on the same HDD.
Doing update-grub doesn't pick up RemixOS, even though the initrd.img file is in the root of that partition.
The "boot-repair" utility did fuck all.
Supergrubdisk2 can detect all the partitions, and boot to both KDE Neon and RemixOS.
What am I doing wrong?
Would it be worth just installing the RemixOS UEFI Grub and hope it finds the KDE Neon partition?
>>
>>54056818
Just write it. Maybe it will be better than others, maybe I'll even use it, who knows.

>Are there any pre-made scripts or do I have to write the myself?
Basically you just need to extend your config for other media files like:

[extension.jpg]
pause

[extension.png]
pause

[extension.gif]
loop-file="inf"

[extension.webm]
loop-file="inf"

[extension.flac]
display-tags=*

[extension.ogg]
display-tags=*

[extension.opus]
display-tags=*

[extension.mp3]
display-tags=*

For setting up hotkeys that do stuff: For simple things there is the key command "run", which runs shell commands and there's the lua api for more complex stuff.
Example:
>Automatically load playlist entries before and after the currently playing file, by scanning the directory.

More scripts:
https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/wiki/User-Scripts

If you like hacking around, you can make mpv your all-in-one media player.
