Teamspeak and mild gaming.
Don't need an i7 or anything, but a c2d wouldn't handle it.

Pentium anniversary edition manages at a push, but I'd rather use a decent i3 or get an i5 for headroom/lower temps.

I don't need more power that that, but fuck high-end CPUs, I'll take a optimized low end Sandy or Ivy Bridge any day, consumes at least half and performs better.

New games are mostly shit anyway, and the few are worth playing I'm in no rush, when a low end Pentium in 5 years performs like a Core i5/i7 (and that WILL happen), then I will play those games.

not him but if your doing layers of stuff, using 1 virtual synth, effects, etc then its going to run slow as hell on a core 2 duo. Used to use a 2010 mac with a core 2 duo and ableton 8 - 9, it was horrible

Integrated graphics. Sure I can get a GPU for the price of a new processor but it'll be low-end stuff and given that I don't play any demanding games it's going to be a waste (and probably shitty if I do play demanding games -- an even bigger waste)

Also the core 2 duo is shit for 2 core/thread+ processing which pretty much already in use by any half-relevant program. It also heats up much quicker than say skylake processors and is much slower, and the motherboards for it are pretty shit and outdated (i.e. no 4x pci3.0 sata/ssd support, no usb c, usb 3.1 gen2, possibly only sata 2 support, slow ram, etc.)

There is literally no reason to not upgrade if you enjoy new technology

A C2D is too slow even for casual web browsing and soft decoding videos these days. Hell I think they were too slow a few years ago.

A C2Q would have been a better way to kick off your post, OP. A C2Q q8400 is fast enough to do most casual stuff.

Better yet, the i7-2600 is still fast enough to do modern gaming.

>>
>>54050983
>A C2D is too slow even for casual web browsing and soft decoding videos these days. Hell I think they were too slow a few years ago.
No it isn't. I have a spare T400 around with the lowest tier mobile C2D you can get and it's more than enough for multiple tab browsing and HD video.
>>
>>54050983
Why wouldn't it? It's a top-end cpu with 8 logical cores and barely 5 years old.
>>
>>54049325
I really don't to much that requires more than that, aside from encoding large amounts of videos.

But the X5460 I crammed into the 775 board does that job pretty well. I guess that still kind of counts as a C2Q.
>>
>>54051026
It's almost 6 years old. CPUs never used to stay on top for that long. The CPU market is more stagnant than it ever was probably in the history of consumer PCs.

A Pentium 3 is sufficient for web browsing if you install NoScript and just manually enable what you need

>CPUs never used to stay on top for that long

Are you contradicting yourself or what?

In fact, an i5-6500 is only faster by 10% in singlethreaded processing while it gets beaten by threading above 4

>>
>>54051097
I don't see a contradiction m8

The CPU market has stagnated. CPUs are lasting longer than ever because they aren't getting faster at the rate that they used to.

If you bought a Pentium 100 in 95 it was horribly outdated 3 years later.

It's all the same binary code being processed. Just because software devs can't keep up with CPU development, you believe CPU progress has stagnated. It has not. You use a video game, or a YouTube video as a metric of performance, and call me a retard.
