So guys - after played with Arch for a while I came to realization that understand what each package is pretty easy and now I'm not scared anymore to review and install a de from 0 without software on ubuntu.

So let's talk for example about Ubuntu minimal install with nothing on it except kernel and ubuntu core.

Now if I want to install MATE core - like I would on Arch - and then pick my own stuff what would I have to do?

You can just install Ubuntu Mate official distro. The point of Ubuntu is to make it easier for you but nothing is stopping you from starting with Ubuntu minimal.
>>
>>54046370
Then why in the world would I use Ubuntu if I just installed from outside sources?

Then I would go back on Arch.
>>
>>54046416
What do you mean by "outside sources"?
>>
>>54046475
Mate from ubuntu repo is not just from developers - it's sometimes older stable version with Ubuntu themes, fonts, other packages and optimizations for it to run fine out of the box with the least amount of crashes, problems.

That's the main reason people prefer and want Ubuntu - If you tell me to use Ubuntu core which has outdated kernel and just install mate from mate repos or other external repo - then why would I use ubuntu in first place? I could go and use debian test or arch or gentoo.

People install the main Ubuntu because it has proven to be the |user friendliest" of all the *nix distros.

Personally, I do run Ubuntu MATE myself, though I'm not the guy you were replying to, because it is it's own official distro, seperate from Canonical. But it let's you still use the canonical repositories at least.
AAAAANYWAYS.
You're being a dick, so stop it.
If you want to use something minimal, install Ubuntu MATE, install *box DE, and uninstall MATE DE. That simple.

Actually, I just checked and it's basically ready to go now already.

Please note that the KDE Neon developers do not provide support for the upgrade process from Ubuntu 15.10 to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, so you are on your own. To install KDE Neon on top of your Ubuntu 16.04 LTS base, you only need to run the set of commands listed below in the Terminal app.

sudo apt update
sudo apt install neon-desktop
sudo apt full-upgrade

Then, you'll need to open the /etc/apt/sources.list.d/neon.list file in a text editor (e.g. Gedit) and make sure that the line "deb http://archive.neon.kde.org/dev/unstable wily main" is in place. If so, start the upgrade process by running the following command in the terminal emulator.

>What does Ubuntu have over, let's say... Win 10?
Faster, smoother GUI, more stable programs, VASTLY simpler back-end, central repository-based program distribution, improved security, sane defaults, virtual desktops since forever, subjectively prettier GUI. That's the normie shit that most will notice (back-end just because less BSODs).

Less normie shit is built-in or appendable support for basically every external device under the sun; file systems, webcams, etc are all pretty much plug-n-play. Powerful terminal, control over update schedule, the ability to customize the interface.

Ubuntu on W10 exists, sure, but just like Wine: it's a patch job for structural differences, and it's not perfect by any means.
>>
>>54053553

Something completely different to try just for fun.

I've been using xenial server for several months, xenial desktop is on my notebook here, and it seems to be just fine - like a more stable, more up-to-date wily - or like a more up-to-date jessie/stretch.

Of course, "up-to-date" is going to lag behind once the LTS gets older, but there's always the more regular versions for that. I'm probably going to do what I usually do on my servers and source-compile packages that I need to be bang up-to-date.

>>54045998
Upgrades from wily work OK - but I haven't tried upgrades from trusty or precise. Those might be thornier, because of course upstart is gone and systemd is in.
