Microsoft is suing the US government over the right to tell its users when federal agencies want access to private data.

It says keeping access requests secret is against the US constitution, which states that individuals should be made aware if the government searches or seizes their property.

Microsoft said 5,624 requests for data were made in the past 18 months, and almost half came with a court order forcing the company to keep the demand secret.

"People do not give up their rights when they move their private information from physical storage to the cloud," Microsoft said in the lawsuit, according to the Reuters news agency.

Microsoft added that it felt the government "exploited the transition to cloud computing as a means of expanding its power to conduct secret investigations".

The US Department of Justice has not yet commented.

What does /g/ think about this?

While it isn't perfect, Windows 10 is the best version of Microsoft's operating system ever. It is fast, reliable, and pretty. Best of all, it runs an endless amount of classic Windows programs, plus the new universal Windows apps too. True, there are some privacy concerns, but if you don't trust Microsoft with your data, why are you using any of the company's software? Sorry, y'all, Microsoft knows what's best for you -- stop fighting Windows 10! Sticking to an older version of the OS is asinine.

It's a good move. If it leads to even more middle fingers from big software to the government even better. If Microsoft blatantly ops out of PRISM it's the best scenario we could hope for. Now that Apple's proven that you can indeed push back Microsoft might get a little bolder with this issue.

But, as always time will tell.
>>
>>54041249
It definitely feels like Apple's little excursion emboldened MS to try and steal some of that thunder for themselves. But what has me worried is that MS saying that the US gov is overstepping their bounds, is like Anita Sarkeesian saying that someone is too SJW.
>>
>>54040371
PR move to pretend M$ isn't spying on you and selling the data.
Or perhaps a more political move to force the government to buy the data from M$ instead of compelling them with a court order.
>>
>>54040371
Data requests that come with a court order to keep the request secret are not the concern. It is the data collection by executive branches that bypass the judicial system that should concern you.
>>
>>54040371
I consider that anything going in the cloud is automatically available to government.
>>54042845
Both should be a concern. If my data is not in the cloud, they could not access it without me knowing about it.
>>
>>54040371
if it's any step closer to ridding the botnet on windows 10 then that's great
>>
>>54041249
Apple's stand was a meaningless PR stunt at best. The NSA is already able to access i-devices, encrypted or not, and pull data. All they did was trick you into thinking they could be trusted.

They sell most of that data to the government. This news of wanting to sue makes sense for one reason: they aren't getting paid this time giving over user data to the feds.

its a fucking joke, botnet wins again
YEAR OF THE LINUX
who would've predicted it would end like this?
>>
>>54040371
That's a respectable position for a company that's essentially the government's main vendor and IT department, and I hope they win and have to personally tell of all data requests. Ultimately they're trying to cash in on the technical naives who believe their data is "private" in microsoft's cloud because of this

Meanwhile Microsoft themselves invades your privacy because they monitor everything that gets uploaded to their cloud and have been known to ban people who upload things that violate their terms of service such as porn. Only way to know that is by having a person or some kind of crawler go through your files.

I got pretty mad when I was unable to trust product reviews online anymore, but having all of these marketing slaves fucking posting literal horeshit in the comments section of websites, youtube, etc made me beyond pissed. And for the last couple years theres been an influx of these pajeets shitting up 4chan. I hope you all will boycott any company doing this, as it is very dishonest and a disgusting practice.

Apple and Google should support them
>>
It's just MS trying to get in on the government bashing Apple has been doing. If they actually cared, they would have put up a fuss when these issues were first happening. Either way I guess any attention towards how the government is misbehaving is good news.
>>
>all these underage retards
MS/Google/etc has been having these legal fights with the US gov for over a decade.

It's only because Apple being a marketing company and deciding to make everything into a marketing campaign that people are paying attention to it happening. Apple never gave a shit about privacy and until the last year when they were caught supporting CISA and it "hurt our brand image" so they did a 180.

Maybe but if major tech companies stand shoulder to shoulder against NSA intrusions and backdoors, they might have a better chance of less backlash and certainly will gain user approval.
Who cares if it is a publicity stunt, as long as the result is real, we all win from this.
>>
When will this windows10/pajeet meme die? Pajeets don't use w10 and wp, they use w7 and Android, fucktards.
>>
>>54043649
It was fairly important, the government was trying to set a precedent and Apple really didn't want that. Simply from a profit standpoint it would be far better if your users could trust you. I mean..they can't..but...they can trust that at least if theyre spied on through NSA shit, none of it will be usable as evidence without very careful sneaky legal fun stuff. Of Apple hadn't resisted than the precedent would be set that encryption would be illegal. I'm not scared of that alone as a concept, in fact, I'm actually scared for the reasons I'm not of that...it is effectively impossible to make encryption illegal, it'd be like making it illegal to fold paper a certain way. Nearly anyone could find paper, and learn to fold it the forbidden way. You can't ban an idea.
>>
PR stunt.

Currysoft has a platinum PRISM membership card, NSA has access to all the data.

Look's like the microsoft shills have reported back to high command that everybody knows windows 10 is botnet. This is clearly a PR stunt to trick all the winbabbies into believing microsoft gives a fuck about your privacy. I bet that soon we'll have shitty threads like: "Windows 10 is now free as in freedom, freetards BTFO" etc etc etc. PROTIP: Microsoft doesn't give a fuck about your privacy and they never will.

>>54043649
This. I don't give a fuck what PR stunts these comapanies pull, I'll never trust them.

>>54043810
It explicitly states in microsofts terms that they will sell your data to third parties and hand your data over to law enforcement. What they want is the right to notify you that they're handing over your data, so they're still not going to stop handing over your data whether you like it or not.

>>54044091

Pretty much anything on a networked computer and not encrypted at 192 or higher can be considered accessible to the government.
