What the fuck happened to the Neo-Tokyo cyberpunk future we were promised?

Are we living it? Or did the Japanese economic downturn in the 1990s kill it?

You need giant archology mega-building habitat projects to have a cyberpunk future.

Its hard to build really big buildings in Japan because its on an active fault line.

Also the japanese economy seems to mostly run on selling cellphones and big-eye cartoons.

The cyberpunk world we were promised was literally destroyed by

neo-80s/retrowave/vaporwave/synthwave faggots who turned our great dystopia into faggot land.

in a world were retards think artists like macintosh plus, mega drive, trevor something, com truise, flashworx, etc. define the cyberpunk scene instead of the original 90s industrial juno reactor, kmfdm, crystal method, underworld, etc.
>>
>>54025260
I would say its gonna be more of a twist between the matrix , deus ex , ex machina , mr robot / fight club and the bible tbqhfam.

Google is basically the leader in anything AI and has all of your data to feed this AI. It will basically create a self replicating abomination and unleash it on the internet , infecting it on a global scale with data sucking botnets.

Facebook has all your more personal data but it will crash and burn when people finally stop thinking its cool so no one really cares.

Meanwhile Apple starts funding prosthetic development , basically becoming a more jewed out version of Sarif. The Apple Legs work real great you can even pair them with your iPhone.

Cern has been performing time travel for a while now , they've also been creating antimatter on a massive scale , denying to comment on their previous claims that it would take ages to create a single grams.

Cern basically buys off every other company with their insane amounts of energy and , of course , becomes evil in the process , manufacturing sentient iRobots to maintain authority. All media is heavily censored which causes the creation of a rebel alliance.

This alliance ultimately ends up blowing up the antimatter to try and destroy cern , which ends up in a mystical explosion seen from thousands of lightyears because no one really understands how damn powerful that stuff is. Everything is gone , along with your debt and your data.

The end.
>>
Closing in on the final component. The GPU.

1. Is the short-board variant of the GTX 950 worth it if I'm especially strapped for cash?
2. Are those low power variants available on the market yet? And does their performance differ?

Too bad. You get a medium size house in a literal fucking grassy hill surrounded by trees and it's going to be soaked during rainstorms in 50 years. Also, you need to walk everywhere or take a tiny self-driving electric that can't leave your commune. Leave your commune? You need to take the government owned public trans system. The highways were destroyed. Maintaining such a vast and general purpose system cost too much. Cars are limited to recreation tracks.

Rural life? Communes are built into the farming communities. There is no "out there". Everyone lives in a production center unless they get in and out via hovercraft.

Space travel? Well, there's a domed garden on the moon. One. One domed garden.

Computer networks? All controlled by the supposedly benevolent overlord organization. Hacking is rare and usually done for terrorism, not righteousness. Activists slightly change the system instead of destroying it.

2010s scifi movies are the future. 1980s scifi movies were too expensive to achieve.
>>
Cyberpunk isn't sustainable as a future initiative anyway. Technology moved in in a resource-conservative direction and the economic feasibility of the of the majority of cyberpunk-tech is next to nothing. Turns out people like smart-phones more than flying cars and google ads makes more money per capita than putting a giant holographic sign in the middle of a building. Building technologies are also moving to more organic-looking structures because biomimicry tends to improve on the mechanical design. Using concrete en masse like how one sees it in Akira is a waste; portland cement is such a shit material. Additionally, cyberpunk themed things tend to disregard the dearth of rare earth metals, and that a majority of them are in shit places like Africa.
>>
Damn do I love some good cyberpunk, coding, CS, and AI. Everything tech, but also I love living out in the rural country on farm land.
Kind of an odd feeling. I think rural areas can still be cyberpunk.

>In near future:
>have drones circle perimeter to make sure everything is safe, gates still up, cows good, crops safe
>bigger drones to do easy limb pickup/remove smaller items
>all these drones live feed to monitors in my house with email if something goes down
>ardunios to constantly measure PH/moisture and when to water what

At this point you can basically sit back and print money without doing near as much work besides keeping your fleet up and going.

Cyberpunk is something to avoid not activily pursue. If you think living in shitty crumbling dark alleyways with badly isolated cables everywhere, with no healthcare, with cheap disgusting food, pollution that gives you cancer, acid rain that kills anything living, private military companies propping up conflicts, megacorps ruling over the world and the internet and ass fisting the average citizen any chance they get "is cool", then I feel sorry for you and am I'm glad we don't seem to be heading that way or at least we're trying not to.

A better future would be symbiosis with nature, minimal energy consumption with extremely efficient tech, natural human augmentation instead of graffing in shitty electronics, nano-level precision manufacturing, phasing out fossil fuels, creating better living conditions for everyone, decentralization of energy production, space exploration, stabilizing population growth, curing death etc. That's where I think we're headed, not everything will be pretty and the internet seems to be one the things that gets attacked constantly but we always hope for better days.

This is a topic worth discussing, seriously. Facebook got big originally because of teenagers & college students. Posts were about the person's life and daily mundane activities. It was a place for stupid college girls to post their half-naked pictures. Post-2012, parents and "adults" have taken over facebook with photos of their grandkids and "like if you remember this" memes.

The only time millennials and slightly older users actually post "original content" on facebook is to post reactions to entertainment/sports/political news items. So the question remains, is Facebook even a "social network" anymore? Does it still fit the definition? Even Twitter has just a place to express faux outrage and troll people.

The old dogs seem like they're being replaced, albeit slowly, by Instagram and Snapchat and other derivative services.

Will we ever get Web 1.0 back? At once it seemed impossible, but is there hope in the future? When social media finally leaves the desktop altogether and resides only on mobile devices? Is such a future possible?

Hold me /g/. Hug me tight and tell me everything will be as it was before.

A futuristic progression requires a sacrifice. It requires us to ignore dumb people and promote the smart ones. The smart people are going to be the ones to make all of this happen. And that requires pretty much sucking it up and admitting that you can't save everyone. And that the long term benefit of saving everyone and their children is to allow the gifted ones to innovate.

is this screencap from blade runner?
>>
The bladerunner esque future that you all want will never ever happen. environmentalisim is too strong for that kind of pollution to happen, at least in the united states. What you will eventually see though is a future thats very similar to the game mirror's edge. but it will also have a mixture of historical buildings, monuments, ghettos, and buildings that cant be replaced/ updated due to financial constraints. But i hate to tell you guy's this. YOU'RE ALREADY LIVING IN A CYBERPUNK WORLD. If you live in any large city it is already very cyberpunkish, just minus the pollution. Huge metropolitan areas like newyork, tokyo, chicago, ect are what most of this is architecture is based on. The united states already has a corrupt dystopian goverment. YOU'R ALWAYS being SPIED on by the GOVERMENT, the CORPORATIONS already KNOW EVERYTHING about YOU, the 1% CONTROL EVERYTHING and ALL of the MONEY. WE ALREADY LIVE IN IT WAKE UPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!

>What the fuck happened to the Neo-Tokyo cyberpunk future we were promised?

-Japan's economy crapped its pants and has never really recovered

-Urban crime has plummeted since the early 1990s and middle-class whites are moving into the inner cities, so cyberpunk's 1980s vision of a hopeless urban jungle (a vision shared by everyone else, to be fair) turned out like predictions of Japanese domination.

Latin America's major cities would be real-life cyberpunk if they were more high-tech, they've already got ridiculous social stratification and corruption issues, IIRC Sao Paulo has more skyscrapers and/or helipads than any other city on Earth. Hong Kong, Tokyo and NYC all function too well.

This is so awesome... I'm from 1990 myself and never really got to experience this period. The closest I got in my childhood was Unreal Tournament 98 (if that counts). In my teens I remember being mesmerised by the animatrix soundtrack, but this "the crystal method" stuff sounds so fucking awesome! thanks for sharing, I finally know what this genre is called now and I got some great references on where to start looking for more in this thread.

Besides, it isn't as good as you remember it was, the future has left you behind old man.
