It's C$399.99 in Canada ($312 in US dollars).

Amazon has gone full crazy and decided $290 is a reasonable price to charge for a 6'' e-book reader.

The cover is not included.

Is it a good time to buy an ereader? Any innovations "around the corner"™?

>less than half the price

Money has very little to do with it. Amazon just pumps out shit knowing they already have a customer base who will never stop using Kindles because they've already bought into the brand and are now in too deep to get out without having wasted a ton of money.

My nook has hardware keys and I never use the fucking things. There's no real reason to.

swiping feels like shit. Enter the physical keys...
>>
>>54024312
If you're actually buying books and you go for anything but a kindle you dun fucked up.

Conversely, if you're pirating everything and you go for something that doesn't do native epub you fucked up just as hard.
>>
>>54024607
>that doesn't do native epub

So the Kobo and Nook then? Because I know the Nook has native epub, and an SD card slot.

>>54024604
Swiping is basically how I flip pages when I read physical books. But hey man, if you want to pay literally twice as much for ads and physical buttons, all the power to you.

It seems to be way more ergonomic than the previous ones. Which is always a good thing.

Jeff Bezos is a Howard Hughes-type billionaire who has completely lost touch with the rest of the humanity.

He will end up funding something so ludicrous on par with Spruce Goose, then end up pissing in milk bottles so that he can watch Big Bang Theory on infinite repeat without leaving his room.
>>
Is the basic Kindle (the non-Paperwhite) decent? I've been reading a lot on my smartphone, and I'd like to move to something that doesn't kill my eyes (as much) and doesn't die after a few hours screen-on time.

I realise the Paperwhite is probably better value, but my budget is a bit tight.
>>
>>54024844
Please make more money from reviewing it than you spent on it. You can't both read and be that dumb.

>>
>>54026563
Going to try hard not to shill but it is one of the best value things I've bought in the last couple years. get it with ads (you don't notice them) and get a "certified refurbished" one (they're in perfect, new condition).

You need a light to read it at night but a soft bedside light will be a lot better than using a phone screen. Holds charge for a very long time and I read a lot. it's paid for itself several times over by not buying books.

Kobo and amazon use the same displays. Kobo is actually pretty overrated my aura H2o is extremely buggy
>>
>>54026563
Yes it is, even with a lower ppi it's good
Some people are hesitant because the lack of backlight. In my experience I only need to turn of the light of my room when the sunset starts. I never read it on commute so I don't how it behaves in public transport

Don't be afraid to buy a used one, their build is really nice and can stand to drops and things alike
>>
>>54026658
They're perfect condition, not a scratch or blemish or mark at all. Genuinely can't tell they're new. It had the plastic screen protector thing you peel off on it. Even the box came in was brand new.

I'd place a small bet on most of, if not all of, the refurbs being sent back under DSR/CCR that the simply can't resell as new as it's technically not. I'd have to have bought a brand new one to compare the packaging to the refurb and see if there is any diff because that would be all there would be. Plus it saves you like £10 (£59->£49) for nothing. If you don't like it, return it. You could probably even get Amazon to do an immediate replacement (they send one out to you before you return yours)
>>
>>54026684
I use it on the train daily, it's pretty much perfect for it. Only minor issue I have is the train I get goes into manchester (uk) at peak time so people are wedged in, everytime people get off I have hold it to my chest so noone knocks it out of my hand but I have to lock it too or I end up swiping pages by accident.

And the biggest surprise that awaits the buyer is the utterly crappy firmware. Bough Kindle Paperwhite and I'm somehow surviving with KOReader. Even though it crashes so terribly, it's way way better than built-in firmware.

its great, just jeff did not allow to turn off leds and that is annoying

Since 2013 I read atleast 70books, I am sure I would not be able to read that much without kindle, especially that some titles are not available in my country and cost fuckton with shipping.

Fucking hell, this thing is nearly $300? Why? There's absolutely no feature included that warrants that, it's gonna end up a dumpster fire like the Fire Phone and will be on sale in less than a year.

I have a 3G Keyboard model still going great and if it dies I can get another model for about $40.
>>
>>54027834
why did you get 3g? I turned my ereader onto flight mode when I flew to Florida may last year and only noticed at new years when I tried to email a book to it cause I couldn't be bothered bending down to get my usb cable.
>>
>>54024590
I have a kobo HD and I WANT physical keys

literally 10% of the time I'm tapping and it's going forward 2 pages OR somehow going backwards even if I'm tapping at the right spot. Not to mention I can't go forward *and* backwards on the same hand holding it.

I'd go back to the Kindle Keyboard if I wasn't already spoiled by the crisper text on the Kobo HD
>>
>>54024607

Implying I can't buy books, and remove the weak Amazon DRM with Calibre?
>>
>>54027064
>recessed screen
I'm trying to remember why I wanted this over the seamless one and I can't.

There was a pro wasn't there?
>>
>>54026642
Oh, trust me. I block ads everywhere else in my life, so I can guarantee I'll notice them on there.
>>
>>54027870

I got it years ago when it first came out so having unlimited 3G was a novely. Since then I've found it come in handy quite a number of times when I can't access the internet (mainly while travelling) but need to send a quick message or check something online.
>>
>>54027834
I might pay $300 for an ereader if it wasn't snail-slow anymore, like if it was something I could actually browse the internet with. Otherwise, $200 was already questionable (but still borderline acceptable) for a premium ereader.

The paperwhite or the kobo HD are already overkill (but fantastic) for ebooks, only reason anyone would get them over the kobo glo or similar is for some PDF utility. Frontlight is of course always mandatory after I've tried it out (oddly enough actually for daytime use rather than at night).
>>
>>54024306
I have never regretted buying my Kindle Paperwhite, but if I were you I would wait until Amazon releases a waterproof one. Don't fall for those fucking idiots who tell you "kobo is superior than kindle" because the Kindle is substantially better if you plan on actually purchasing any books ever, with stuff like X ray.
>>
>>54027949
Oh nice didnt know it was unlimited data included. Can see how it could be useful in emergencies
>>
>>54026597
But why though? The whole point of kindle is they can be held comfortably in one hand
>>
>>54027973
nope. You missed the point.
>>
>>54024306
>>54027958
nothing worth waiting for, maybe colour but that'll be years. Just buy a cheap basic one it'll last you a couple years and they dont cost much
>>
>>54027961

Yeah and you can use the 3G access free anywhere Amazon has an agreement with a carrier which is around 60 countries at this point: http://kindleworld.blogspot.ie/p/countries-with-free-kindle-3g-access.html
>>
>>54027973
a 8" to 10" would be perfect for reading PDFs/images, 6" for ebooks.
>>
>>54028060
typing would drive you insane the refresh rate is that bad
>>
>>54028196
damn that's incredible, my knidle touch is like once per second, I don't notice it because it takes longer than that to read a page.

I think you're on to something here

man I wonder how that must look in person

Do you have this reaction when someone who doesn't need anything more than a Camry buys an Audi? Or when someone buys a Tommy Hilfiger shirt? I wouldn't buy a Kindle at that price but I can see why someone might.

Theoretically with the same eink displays the Kobo's (sans Aura) should look better since they lack the extra capacitive layer between the ink and your eyes the Kindles have (using IR instead)

Honestly I just bought the pw3 and the glo HD and I'm going to keep the pw3 over the glo, the touchscreen on the Kindle is so much more superior, and it registers almost every touch, whereas the kobo would do touches now and then. Also the kobo software is slow AF. Just jailbreak the pw3 so you can get epubs on it
