Welcome to /flt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

I've never used linux before but I am getting my new laptop for university today. It has 2 drives (one SSD one HDD) and I would like to install a distro on one of them.

I will be using this for general university work, documents and browsing and also I am learning to program in C++.
I will also have a Windows 7 boot on my SSD.

My friends have recommended I use Arch but my understanding is that it is quite difficult to use. Will this be an issue or should I just dive in the deep end to help me learn? Which distro would you recommend?
>>
>>54016520

Whenever I start it, it creates a .lyrics directory in my HOME directory. It doesn't display them until I press L, but I still don't need that directory. It's kind of weird not to have the option to turn it off.

how new? If it's too new, you're pretty much going to have to use something arch based, because everything else uses older kernel versions which don't support newer hardware

honestly arch isn't too difficult if you use an installer and aren't pathologically terrified of the idea of copying and pasting commands from the wiki into a terminal if you fuck something up

Arch isn't hard, but setting it up and maintaining it could be a pain if you don't feel enthusiastic about it. Other distributions don't keep you from learning anything that you could learn with Arch, but if they have an environment set up out-of-the-box, then obviously won't encourage it as much. Most distributions will let you do a minimal install if you wish to, mind.

The other Anon's point of kernel version could be valid if the laptop is new enough. Arch is far from the only option, though.

If you're going to use the Linux install for your university work, I find static release distributions, as opposed to rolling release like Arch, to give some ease-of-mind that any update won't make far-reaching changes that require user attention.

>>54016612
Chromium is in Copr for those who really want it. I recall policy changes are being made that will allow Chromium in main repos in Fedora 24, but take that with a pinch of salt.

"Maintaining" Arch doesn't require more effort than "maintaining" any other distribution. Why do you insist on spreading stereotypes, FUD and false information? What do you get out of it? A feeling of superiority for being able to talk about "technical" things?

>>
>>54016684
It's not false. As I note further down, by nature of being a rolling release distribution, big changes can potentially come with any given system update. This is true whether you're running Arch or Debian Sid or whatever.

I haven't used Arch in a very long time but I do not have anything against it, and I gave no indication that I do. Please do not jump at my throat for simply making it clear that your distribution of choice is not a perfect fit for everyone.

The quality of the free driver depends entirely on what card you have. My HD6850 for instance works incredibly well and I believe it holds true for most of the R600 cards. Not every other card is as lucky.

>>54016807
From looking at the RadeonFeature page at freedesktop.org, I get the feeling mobile GPUs aren't a priority. Makes me remember my old Radeon Mobility X1250. I was just happy that thing worked at all.

I can't speak for the proprietary driver. I'm staying well clear from that shit.

Adjusting as in so far editing the rc.conf and enabling the image viewing mode, yes.

I am using Konsole/zsh -- when I disable compositing in KDE it works, if I enable it I have huge white stripes or the images disappear immediately. I also tried the display-border option which didn't improve the situation.

It removes the lockfile on the database. Only do this if you're sure that pacman isn't doing anything, otherwise you may run into more pacman related troubles.

>lockfile on the database
You mean pacman knows it is running if this files exist?
So if pacman doesn't delete is it thinks it is running?
>>
>>54017357
More or less. Pacman "locks" the package database so it doesn't do things without another pacman process knowing about it. Otherwise you might get conflicts or remove files that another pacman thought were there. If the lock exists, pacman will refuse to work because it can have pretty bad effects, and it would mean that either another pacman process is already running, or a previous pacman process didn't exit cleanly (which could be caused by other problems).

How do I check whether a non-blocking socket has connected or not? The code I'm using is this:
sock = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM | SOCK_NONBLOCK, 0);
...

if (connect(sock, (struct sockaddr *) &saddr, sizeof(saddr)) == -1 && errno != EINPROGRESS) {
// Raise error
}

...

int sock_err;
size_t sock_err_len = sizeof(int);
getsockopt(sock, SOL_SOCKET, SO_ERROR, &sock_err, &sock_err_len);

The connect() call raises an error, which is EINPROGRESS naturally, but I can't seem to get that with getsockopt. For me, getsockopt only returns 0 as in, no error. Trying to send or receive data using the socket results in EAGAIN, as the socket is not yet connected and ready.

Any ideas, /g/entlemen? I guess I could make a recv call with MSG_PEEK and check the value, but it seems kinda clunky. Then again, this is linux.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I'd just like to interject for another moment. The person you're referring
as Linus has, in fact, done just a kernel for the GNU operating system,
or as I've recently taken to calling it, nothing. Linus is not a programmer
unto himself, but rather another leech in a fully functioning software team
made useful by GNU developers.

Many computer users run his lackluster version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the finnish reject
who is widely popular today is often called a "programmer", and many of
his followers are not aware that he stole his ideas from the GNU system,
developed by the GNU project.

There really is a Linus Torvalds, and these people are worshiping him,
but he is just another attention whore in the software world. Linus is an
egotist: someone who wastes resources to develop his knockoff kernel that
you run. Linus is not an essential person in the project and is useless by
himself; he can only function in the shadow of a complete software team.

1) Not all Linux OSes use GNU
2) the only thing that all Linux distros have in common is the Linux kernel, therefore it makes sense to call it "Linux"
3) there are many other essential components to a distro besides the GNU stuff

>From your post and the fact that you're using Arch I can very easily tell you have no fucking clue what you're talking about and started using linux a month ago.

It seems like using Arch is orthogonal to how much Gnome sucks donkey dicks. I've been using it since before 3 and its literally fucking garbage.

I've had the distinct displeasure of having to use it throughout all of its horrible iterations for work and the like

People who design software like that are explicitly anti-user. From the way those assholes treat their respectful users and their concerns and requests on mailing lists, to the absolute shitware they vomit out every release

And its not just the GNOME devs, its the Red Hat cabal really. The problem extends to dipshits like Poettering as well

Getting back to the file picker "you don't know what you're talking about" isn't really a valid response, they somehow managed to make the GTK3 picker be worse than the GTK2 one. And... it can't even organize by type or tell folders apart from files

And it can't even recognize double click.

When RMS dies the GNU bullshit will slowly die off
Its what happens when you choose retarded name

if you ever seen a video where someone is forcefully trying to use GNU slash Linux in their speech you would understand

Sorry, maybe you want some credit, but theres MANY people who dont get credit

As Stallman said himself:

>Since a long name such as GNU/X11/Apache/Linux/TeX/Perl/Python/FreeCiv becomes absurd, at some point you will have to set a threshold and omit the names of the many other secondary contributions

Well he just wants to cut out others, but dont like being cut out by himself
Linux will survive Stallman and term gnu linux will slowly die off after he stops harping

All this opinion of mine does not mean I am not fan of open source and dont think that Stallman is right in other stuff.. but he is quite littearlly aspie as fuck, so you get bad with the good

Keep in mind that there's no doubt he has some manner of autism. The actual kind, not the "I don't like this so it's autistic" kind. It's very probable that statements like that are made without consideration for the assumptions people will make around it. In this case, it can easily be said that sexual intercourse between the consenting parties is fine, which is essentially what what RMS said boils down to. The issue is of course whether the consent of a child can safely be regarded as actual consent (no), but that topic doesn't get broached and instead people just assume that he implicitly means that it can.

Wikipedia is a public website where you can edit, publish articles. It does not represent an authority over information, rather just a source of inspiration - an sort of index for information.

You're free to call it however you want, if you're using the kernel with your own tools or something else do it, if you use it with GNU tools which offer you the desktop experience - then just call it Linux, people just like to properly inform every one else and call it as it is... half gnu tools half kernel.

RMS is basically a homeless loser who hasn't made any real contributions in the last 20 years. He is still super butthurt that Linux beet HURD (but hey, HURD just got basic sound support in 2016!) and basically tries to claim Linux because Linus used GCC and the GNU coreutils. He survives on the charity of others and speaking engagements where he spouts his insane, paranoid, philosophy. Basically he won't be happy until all the programmers are homeless hackers like him and all the companies are shut down. How people are supposed to support themselves and their families in that scenario aren't things he has to deal with because he is basically a permanent grad student. He does make some good points about privacy, but for him, there is no middle ground. Anything that may reduce your privacy even the slightest bit (like movie recommendations on Netflix) is evil according to him, and must be destroyed. In a lot of ways he show classic signs of mental splitting, which is a classic symptom of mental illness. To top it off, when he does write code, he does so in the style of the awful GNU style guide which is a crime against humanity IMHO.

So, in a nutshell:
He's a bird-fucking, self-absorbed, power hungry, toe jam eating pedophile that thinks everything should be free and everyone should be forced to share, who looks like he hasn't showered in years so as to create a static shield around his body to protect from aliens. He also created an OS without a kernel because he's basically Steve Jobs gone communist. Oh, and he calls himself doctor though he holds no PhD.

Yes. What you areferring to are GNU/Linux distros, which ship different additional packages.

Darwin is the name of the OS.
XNU is it's kernel

So it would be
Darwin/XNU.

And OS X being the tradename.
Like Fedora
Or Ubuntu
>>
>>54019423
Yeah I posted both those posts.
"Linux" is just the kernel and doesn't cover the whole distro you use.
But "Linux/GNU" DOESN'T COVER IT EITHER.
You should call it "Gnu/X/Linux/..." then... it makes no sense.

People simply took the name of the kernel and started naming the whole system after that. That's how natural language works. Just accept it.

Even if you don't accept it, people will keep calling it Linux and the real world outside of /g/ will never use the clumsy hard to pronounce name "GANUU SLASH LEENOX". Never.
>>
>>54019270
He actually has a PhD you fucktard. Honoris Cause by the swedish royal institution
>>
>>54019474
I know that's how natural languages work, and I agree with you: everyone (the great majority of people) started calling an OS that uses Linux as its kernel "Linux", so now it's Linux. It's still technically wrong to refer to such an OS as "Linux".
>>
So say a guy has a CentOS 7 install, and something happened and now the first option in Grub doesn't boot right. It just ends with dracut losing its shit. An earlier kernel in the list boots fine. What can I do to fix this?
>>
>>54019474
>People simply took the name of the kernel and started naming the whole system after that.
And this is an error which needs to be fixed.

A music plyer != mp3 player
Image editing != photoshopped
Searching the web != "to google"

Feel free to call it Linux around tech illiterates, but since this board is a tech board, call it by it's correct name.

But if you care about the history, even around tech illiterates call it GNU/Linux, so when they search it up, they're getting to know that the thing was created so people can have freedom in computing, not because Linux Torvalds had a lucky run.

>that thinks everything should be free and everyone should be forced to share

My main beef with him is that he doesn't seem to be actively contributing to software anymore. He hasn't done anything of note in a long time.

The best way to spread his ideology isn't by being a weirdo and preaching when you don't even look respectable or inspiring

The best way is to create incredible software that people *have* to use and slap a big fat GPL license on it

But that would actually require work so Stallman doesn't do it. Instead he lives off of money he gets for speaking and god knows what else. I don't need to hear your arguments again for the millionth time

You know what would make the GPL more popular and far more powerful?
>An office suite that didn't suck
>A DE that didn't suck
>An OS that rivaled OSX or Windows, not some cobbled together effort like Linux with your favorite DE with things people want for productivity and entertainment -- games, media players, etc and it should all WORK

GCC was like the most amazing shit forever but its being replaced by Clang pretty much everywhere. Instead of using his resources and skill to replace closed alternatives he just went around being a fat slob speaking about shit 99.99% of people don't care about.

The thing is: The GNU/Linux denomination is unilateral. No one goes around saying Windows/NT because MS stated the OS was to be called "Windows".

Calling it Linux is also incorrect as it only refers to the kernel it uses.

So the international standard of calling paper square which is reinforced with multiple layers of paper is what should be used intead of Kleenex?

Plastic rubber strip with adhesive and liquid sucking material should be used instead of Band-Aid?

openvpn dns issues are gay. Had similar issues way back, you have to put dns server in either client or server config.

I might look into filtering through the shit when I get home. I also have some additional resources to add to the site and I was considering to update the IRC page with guides on how to setup HexChat, irssi and WeeChat. And a paste service would be neat.
So many things to do, so little time to do it in.

This time it wasn't hard.

Can you please lay out your understanding of how the GNU/Linux is helping the Linux community?

Please, some actual arguments if you are interested in the discussion.

we just call it gpl2 or gpl3

So that 0.0001% of people will go "HMM WHATS THIS "GNU" THING?" and google it. Then they'll go on the FSF's site and get indoctrinated. That's the only use.

Confess your sins?

I'd like to not use proprietary Nvidia drivers, but it can't be helped when I do occasionally gayme on the desktop. AMD is my next buy, I want to get rid of this 970. Also, upgrading sometimes overrides the nvidia driver since Debian's package is still at 352.*, making me reinstall the drivers again. As a semi-related thing, I read somewhere that the Nvidia driver doesn't like 4.4. Is that true?

Nobody argued that. He asked how GNU/Linux was helping the Linux community. I replied by informing him that it was GNU that made the GPL, and that Linux' popularity has been due to their choice of license.

Please avoid using the term “google” as a verb, meaning to search for something on the internet. “Google” is just the name of one particular search engine among others. We suggest to use the term “search the web” or (in some contexts) just “search”. Try to use a search engine that respects your privacy.

The GPL is a very important contribution. So are all the utilities you use from the GNU foundation, most notably gcc. I'm fine with however you call the OS though, but saying GNU played no part is simply wrong. I don't see anything wrong with people calling it GNU+Linux either, since they just want to properly acknowledge the important contributions GNU has made. Stop being an autistic fuck and just use whatever you think is correct.

Who is saying gnu played no part
we are just getting tired of stallman worshiping and gnu pushing everywhere
can you just quit for a second and dont throw tantrum when someone makes /flt/ and not /flgt/?

We know about GNU contributions, they are in the past now and it serve no purpose to damage the name. The End.
