DRU (Domino, a pizza delivering robot, has made its announcement when Domino's Australia released information, including a video, about their new delivery scheme.
This was a month ago, and people presumed it was an April Fool's joke that was accidentally released early. Its not. How does /g/ think about this concept? Domino's AUS has already stated that they are aware that while delivering the goods, vandalism and theft could be a problem. But what the literal fuck am I looking at.
Also, they've said that this thing has been sourced from the military. Is this going too far?

As for it being nothing new. I can understand why you mention it. It really isn't anything spectacular. Which is my point. Why have they gone through all the trouble of making self-driving robots that can only deliver a few Kms away? With the risk of being vandalized, stolen, or tampered with?
They ought to be loosing money from the whole idea aren't they? Is there any other format they can use this idea that isn't as bloody stupid as the delivering being done in this fashion?

It is really cool to see this kind of commercial application of unmanned ground vehicles.
It likely uses some form of artificial intelligence to have a generalized ability to avoid obstacles and plan navigation based on training data.
I don't know what sort of model they went with, they don't say, but it is definitely some sort of result of artificial intelligence.
It seems like a big joke at first, but this sort of autonomous delivery is a huge deal as it only becomes increasingly more viable.

The people thinking a robot is more expensive forget all the insurance and liability you have from employees.
Employees can fuck around, employees can sue you, employees need healthcare, employees need time off, employees only work limited hours, etc etc
If the robot is a higher initial investment but costs lower eventually, then they'll go robotic.
With wages and health costs increasing for human employees and the cost of drones dropping, of course you'd go with drone, especially when it is something as simple as delivery.
