The frequency of those updates all depends on the brand and carrier.
Back when i had a galaxy s4, samsung would release an update like once a season, then with tmobile, i'd have to wait for them to shit it up with bloatware and make sure it was stable after all that nonsense to get it on my phone. i got maybe 2 updates in a years time with that phone, and both of them were shit. Ended up trying my best to get cm running on it, and even then, nightlies were the only thing worth running on there.
no idea how frequent the updates from brands and carriers are now, since i've had a oneplus one for a while now and use community developed roms that get updated weekly.
I have a theory: because some people enjoy getting cucked. Strange I know but maybe these nexus users somehow derive pleasure from knowing that they are getting ripped off.

My cheap zte warp elite does, files transfer at ~50MB/s from phone (microsd storage) to my pc and I can write to my phone (microsd storage) from my PC at ~25MB/s. If my cheap android phone can do this than so can your fancy flagship android phones with a microsd slot.

Back on my nexus 5 after the g3 died but now 32GB is enough again.

Aven assuming sandisk cheaped out on 200GB microsd cards they will still have a good ~1,000 write cycles before they fail. That's 200,000GB of writes on 200GB microsd cards. You're only gonna write 1 or 2 TB of data on those cards while you use them.
A hard drive can fail in 2-4 years unpredictably due to mechanical wear and tear.

At some point every Android phone I've owned has pissed me off enough with lag, OTA bullshit issues, etc to make me want to change to an iPhone but for the last 3 phones I've convinced myself reading shit on /g/ that the "Lag is gone!" "Buttery smooth" and shit and it never actually is.
Nexus 6p owner here. Fingerprint scanner is awesome, fuckin great screen, marshmallow and snapdragon cpu are smoother than OPs baby ass.
As for the expandable storage problem: it's a phone. I have a desktop and iPod for everything else.

I've had at least 4GB free on my 5X since I've had it. I torrent anime and watch it at work, I just delete it when I'm done. I don't store music because a separate MP3 player is better for me. I keep a flash drive on my keyring so no need to use my phone for storage.

...? Fastboot doesn't void warranty. It's literally what OTAs themselves use to apply the update.
You're confusing it with bootloader unlocking which allows you to install roms, but for Nexus devices it doesn't void the warranty and can be easily relocked. But that's another topic ad have nothing to do with updates.
