HDD 100% usage spikes and laptop freezes for 1-2 secs every 2-10 minutes caused by "System and compressed memory" process.

I've tried disabling Superfetch, Windows Search, Background inteligent transfer service, disabling "Show me tips about Windows", tried different Virtual memory settings, different Power Plan settings, but nothing helps.
any ideas?

I think i found a problem in a gentoo overlay. a simple letter change on a flag
- --enable-i-really-know...patches-aba
+ - --enable-i-really-know...patches-abb

would fix it but i don't know where to report this issue. the guy who maintains the overlay seems like the place to start but I don't know how this all works and whether or not he can change the efl-9999.ebuild file, or if it's gentoos' portage tree maintainers' deal.

wat do?
>>

>>54003017
I was planning on getting a regular desktop. But I got before I did, I came across this deal and got it 40% off. Which would save me tons of money and persuaded me to go for the laptop instead.
And really, for a 5 year old computer, that's not too bad. It has done me really well, allowing me to play games at max settings. But I am guessing it's finally starting to show its age.

I guess I'll have to consider buying a new PC again then. Looks like it's time.

How good is the haswell i5 IGPU?
Lets say with a recent game like XCOM 2.

Or with a recent card like GTX 950?

My graphics driver crashes if I play any video game that pushes the video card. The screen turns black and won't recover and I have to reboot. I can hear the GPU fan turn off but everything else stays on. Windows event viewer either gives no error or "display driver crashed and recovered" error.

I've replaced both my GPU and PSU. Clean install and problem persists even after switching from Nvidia to AMD. Clean install of Windows didn't help. Pretty sure we can cancel out GPU/PSU/Driver as the culprit.

Memtest86+ runs for 12 hours without error.

Safe to assume at this point that it's my motherboard crapping out? It doesn't matter which PCIe slot I use. 3D apps are the only thing that crash PC.

On the same topic: what's a good mobo manufacturer for AMD cpus? I'm using an ASUS mobo, not sure if I should switch over to MSi or a different brand.
>>
>>54003821
For a turn-based title, XCOM 2 is actually very demanding: http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/gpu_displays/xcom_2_pc_performance_review_-_amd_vs_nvidia/6

The Haswell iGPU can run your desktop, and light games, like WoW: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Core_i7_4770K_Haswell_GPU/19.html

A GTX 950 will run all modern games, at medium settings. It will be much, much more powerful than the Haswell iGPU.

It is a Z170 board, with ok-ish heatsinks and VRMs. Google for OC results by others who own it.

Google will tell you what MadVR does, but I want to suggest that if you're not interested in video quality autism and want something that "just works" you go with the MPV player.

MadVR can achieve better quality and is easier to customize than MPV, but if you're just going to use the player stock, I haven't ran into anything MPV had issues with.
>>
>>54004943
Default is perfectly fine. MadVR is a different audio and video filter pack was pushed around the time anime started getting encoded with 10-bit colour instead of 8-bit (dont really understand it but meant better quality but less compatibility)
MadVR was touted to increase quality further but with a performance hit (not a problem unless on an old onboard.

Not really a noticeable change but some people like it,

Practicing for a job interview for tomorrow. It's a support technician job for a city. A friend of a friend gave me a rundown of the kind of questions I may get asked, just want to run 2 of them by a few people.

- How would you go about imaging a PC -
The only problem I have with this question is I'm not sure what kind of software they use in a city environment. I would probably use Windows' built in backup tool to create an image. Could someone with experience tell me what kind of tools they generally use for this?

- What technology and process would you use to build images for multiple PCs simultaneously? -
This is the only other one I'm a little iffy about. If all of the PC's are the same spec, I could just clone an image onto xAmount-hdds and then go plug them in. But I'm guessing the PC's might vary in specs, so maybe my approach wouldn't really work.
>>
>>54005060
I'd recommend MPV over MPC because "out of the box" it supports pretty much every file format you throw at it: video, audio, streams, you're covered.
And secondly, if you watch anything with subtitles, which a lot of people I know do heavily, the default desktop-resolution subtitles are simply a godsend compared to what you can achieve on MPC, as far as I'm aware, it has been a while since I used it.

And, a lot of the configuration can be as simple as a copy-paste into a file instead of digging through a crapload of GUI options.

I'm biased, of course, read some opinions on the contrary if you have doubts.

>>
>>54005104
If you dusted it off, and you made sure it's idle through software, then yeah just leave it alone.
Otherwise go clean it and make sure you don't have something using hardware acceleration in the background.

And if you messed with the thermal paste god save your soul, some people love doing this on GPU's, I highly advise against putting yourself through that.

No clue what that stuff is so probably not. Just need it for home use for hooking up a few computers, a printer, a nas, and whatnot
>>
>>54005154
The built-in backup will just create a backup, not a bootable image.

If you had more time it would have been useful to practice on something (make an image of your PC, deploy to another or a VM)

I assume the questioning is how you take an image of an existing machine complete with configuration and software.
Look up 'sysprep' in Windows and how to create a .wim file from a sysprepped image.

This file you can then import into a tool such as a network deployment server (Windows Deployment Services) or deploy manually using imageX (Vista/7 only, not sure what its replacement was)

>>54005266
VLANs are a way of splitting the networking (systems plugged into ports 1-3 cant talk to those on 4-6, etc)
QoS is Quality of Service, prioritising some traffic over others such as streaming video/audio
PoE is Power over Ethernet, which as it sounds lets you both hook a device up to the network and power it from the same cat5 cable.

For your use, just ignore that lot. Get a simple metal switch from netgear, d-link, etc.
Brand differences are minimal until you start looking at those with additional features
>>
>>54005283
If on Window 8/10 you can find an option to delete all files, applications and accounts, essentially returning the OS to a brand new state under the 'Recovery' section.

For Windows 7 you would need to boot from the installation DVD (F11, F12 or DEL when booting) and when presented with a list of drives to install to, just delete them all so it installs WIndows fresh.

You may also want to enter your BIOS (DEL or F2 when booting) and select the option to restore to default settings
>>
>>54005222
You remember correctly and there is no installation, just put it somewhere and associate video files with it through Windows.

Yes, all configuration is done through the config file, but it has a graphical interface for all the basic video controls. It will "just work", you don't need to mess with the config at all.
Look up the manual for keyboard controls as well, for stuff like screenshots and moving subtitles around, playback speed, etc.

In Win7, when I double-clicked a scrollbar to move it, the scrollbar stopped moving with my mouse as soon as I stopped pressing the left mouse button. if you can't fix your Windows 8.1 then your best bet would be to backup your data and reinstall. Is your personal data on a separate partition?
With your live-cd you should be able to boot into a graphical environment, open a file manager and copy your data to an external hdd or a usb stick. Also, while you're at it, you can try out that version of Linux (what is the distribution called on your live cd?) and see if you somehow like it. I'm sure /g/ would happily help you move to Linux, should you want to.

Hey guys. I'm learning javascript on uni, and I've run with two problems on my homework.

I've made an HTML page that is supposed to make calculations of a student final grade based on two grades, if any of the two text fields is left blank, an error message should appear. Pretty simple stuff, both JS and html pages are working.

But now I'm having two issues:

1 - There is a NaN (not a number) box appearing before the error message, which I assume is because my script is checking if the value of both text field is an int. Can I hide this NaN message? Avoid it?

2 - How do I use the .toFixed command in order to correct the number of decimals?

my script is looking like this

function validaForm()
{
var a=document.forms["ex2"]["a"].value;
if (a==null || a=="")
{
alert("Erro!");
return false;
}
var b=document.forms["ex2"]["b"].value;
if (b==null || b=="")
{
alert("Erro!");
return false;
}
}

function exercicio2()
{
var a=document.getElementById("a").value;
var b=document.getElementById("b").value;

alert((parseInt(a) * 0.8) + (parseInt(b) * 0.2))
}

not much, even a raspberry pi can do it*
*assuming it is not doing other things at the same time

a dedicated graphic card with a 1080p and HDMI out would make it much easier, but you still have to set up the software which can be tricky for less technical minded folks

you should be able to do this for under $100 if you plan it out.

Google has some HDMI streaming stick that probably does some of what you want. There are also other things on the market for this kind of stuff, but be sure to know what setup you want before getting them as they don't all work the same way.

If it is Netflix or some other big name then it will probably work. If it is movies off of your hard drive then read more carefully.

MX200 is I would guess bit more reliable because its MLC and not TLC nand used and also better write speeds when writing large files

850 evo is bit faster in read and has better warranty, its more popular generally

the price difference is not that large, and its faster(nand can be access in paraller, so more nand chips, more performance), last longer and gives you freedom to do whatever you want

I have used it on several versions of Ubuntu (even same hardware, old Pentium 4) and Raspbian without trouble, signal is weak for some setups but I expected that much given the low power draw and tiny antenna.

Now I have problems with it on Debian 8.3 (doing a light install). At boot up I got two errors message something about wireless hardware, but only when the usb is plugged in. After trouble shooting for awhile I get non-free realtek packages installed and those errors go away. But the setup still doesn't see any wireless options under LXDE network manager.

Had the same question and after googling I came to the understanding that

Vim is very widely used as an editor, which is a very useful tool for many things. More powerful then simple editors like notepad, but has a steep learning curve.

Emacs is another editor, but it has grown into somethings so complex and powerful it can arguably replace a desktop environment or OS at a fraction of the resources. Much more powerful, but it is insane to learn.
Also Emacs has "evil mode" which mimics Vim, "org mode" which was made to organize task but has become a starting point for so much more, "w3m" yes even a basic web browser with image support running at near terminal level, and even has a competitive IDE plug in.

People have called me insane for trying to start with Emacs, but given how powerful it is I figure I would just start smashing my head into the wall now rather then later. On a side note Vim is has very centralized development compared to Emacs so I bet Vim will have more forking a decay in the next decade or two.

So I fucked up quite bad.

I tried installing a modded BIOS (dunno kf you heard of ozmosis) on an asus motherboard, using AFUDOS. Initially I thought I was lucky enough that the system was booting just fine. After a few more tries, shit got stuck into the asus logo and nothing, absolutely nothing will work. It just restarts itself when it detects an USB drive with BIOS files, rather than load crashfree. Won't respond to any other keys except esc which supposedly disables this ozmosis thing, but it gets stuck on a red screen. Clearing CMOS does basically nothing.

So I'm accepting my defeat. Which motherboard would be cheap but decent for an i5 4460, DDR3 memory and some r9 280x?

It uses a very common AMI BIOS. I'm confused to why this would happen without any notice. You probably won't play any brand new AAA games on decent settings or framerates, you'd need a $1000 PC for that. You could play most games from two years ago or so pretty easily though. Maybe a GTX 960/R9 285 or something and an unlocked Haswell. If you can afford an i5-6600k though I'd recommend it though just for DDR4 RAM.

Most 1080p/60Hz monitors are passable, there's enough competition. The only time when you have to worry about getting ripped off are upper end monitors because of lack of competition, 1440p/144Hz especially. Just look for 5 ms or less (1ms if you want to do competitive FPS or something) response time and read reviews for complaints of ghosting. Don't buy a 1080p over 23 in. or so it's probably a waste.

Why are wired connections being forcibly phased out? My mom's wifi's not even that great yet if i want to let my mom hook up her tablet and phone to a TV I have to get a Chromecast or Amazon Fire.

I'm trying to make a modal using jQueryUI where the objects can rotate around. I can't for the life of me get the fucking math right though and it's frustrating me to no end.

selectcircle.click(function(){
var circleindex = $(this).index()-1;
var centerindex;
console.log(circleindex);
});
linkmoddet.each(function (index){
if ($(this).hasClass('moddetcenter'))
{
centerindex = $(this).index();
console.log("the center is index #"+centerindex);
}
//This is where I keep fucking up.
var i = centerindex - circleindex + $(this).index();
var newi;

if (i <= -1)
{
i += moddetids.length-1;
console.log(i, newi);
$(this).switchClass(classes[i],classes[newi]);
console.log("The modlet is #"+i+" the class it has is "+classes[newi+classes.length-1]+" and now it has the class "+classes[newi]);
}
if (i >= classes.length)
{
newi = i - classes.length;
console.log(i, newi);
$(this).switchClass(classes[i],classes[newi]);
console.log("The modlet is #"+i+" the class it has is "+classes[newi+classes.length-1]+" and now it has the class "+classes[newi]);
}
else
{
$(this).switchClass(classes[i], classes[$(this).index()]);
console.log("The modlet is #"+$(this).index()+" the class it has is "+classes[i]+" and now it has the class "+classes[i]);
}
console.log($(this));
});
});

This happened to me, two weeks later it totally crashed and refused to boot. I thought the Hdd was dead but I was able to recover my files using a linux recovery USB. Theres two things that can cause 100% hdd usage for seemingly no reason:
- Corrupted windows.
- Bad sector develops on your hdd, Windows 8 and later automatically tries to move data from failing sectors onto safe parts of the Hdd, if it can't complete that then it keeps trying over and over, sticking you into a 100% hdd usage cycle.

Either way the solution is to backup all your data and reinstall windows from scratch. Don't worry about finding your license key, laptops save it and when you put in the windows USB/disc it will automatically fill the box. If you get other signs of a failing hdd like funny noises or continued 100% usage after reinstalling windows then you need to replace the hard drive

Most asus motherboards have a specific USB port that you need to put the stick in to flash the bios, are you sure you're using the right one?

Are you ever going to be in a situation where having a tablet is appreciably better than just having a laptop?

If no, ignore the swivel screen gimmicks

They will so long as they're packed correctly. Video codec and subtitle format are totally independent.

N/A, Passmark far overvalues having lots of threads and integer performance compared to what actual games use.

Because people don't like wires.

If you've got a laptop with no ethernet, get a USB ethernet adapter. They are pretty cheap and work well.

Also don't buy the cheapest router. I got a high end Asus router and have no wireless issues anymore. Also where you place the router has a big influence on reception.

Well the integrated graphics can run games, so what are your performance expectations when you run games?

I wan't to be able to run PS1 emulators for sure, and want to play MGSV at low or mid settings for sure.
