After multiple KDE shill threads in past month I gave it a spin. I'm using Manjaro XFCE for few years so I decided to test out their KDE release. Fucking hell this is beautiful and snappy even on old c2d 2 GHz, 4GB RAM laptop. I like where Linux is heading, will test new Gnome too but I'll be installing KDE version of Manjaro for sure. What's your prefered KDE distro and why? Tips for new KDE user? Opinions on new versions of KDE and Gnome?
>>
Thanks for the heads up, OP. I was planning on using Manjaro KDE when I buy a new desktop. The Xfce version is simply rock-solid.

The only tip for KDE I can give is to look up drop-down terminals. I remember there were at least two KDE-specifc ones. Yakuake was the name I think. Post more impressions.

So far everything is snappy. no crashes. Browsing, watching a show and no issues. Like you said XFCE is rock solid but this is beautiful. Dolphin file options are incredible. I was about to bitch about the only cosmetic flaw I've found and that is the bottom panel being too "fat" but one click on the setting button and height is trimmed. Will look into drop down terminals but I usually run Terminator, it's comfy.
>>
Well Alt+Space to start krunner and then just remove the start button. No reason to have it then krunner does the same thing.

If you don't like plasma/ the kde desktop you can just install XFCE and replace the xfwm with kwin and that way have most of the KDE experience.
>>
>>54001616
But you can't see applications by category with krunner, can you?
>>
>>54001616
>Alt+Space to start krunner and then just remove the start button. No reason to have it then krunner does the same thing.

Thanks for this, I won't remove it yet due to categories and exploration but I will use it for sure.. I could test it out before going full KDE, why not.

I didn't said it was crappy but it is old (2009) compared to modern hardware. I expected slower performance compared to XFCE for sure. It uses 150-200 RAM (this could change when installed I guess) more compared to XFCE version of Manjaro and that's it.

Since I have a laptop with intel cpu+gpu i installed arch and yes plasma5.6 is sick.finally no more crashes.gnome 3.20 is still better imo. Manjaro is a great distro and everyone with hardware issues should try it because mhwd is awesome.small tip though. When installing aur packages with yaourt use the --noconfirm flag so it doesnt nag you constantly.
>>
>>54001038
Welcome to the superior KDE master race.
Make sure you are using KDE 5.6, there are a few bugs that have been addressed from the former 5.5

Honestly, Arch KDE was more responsive than Kubuntu for meme. Manjaro should be fine though
>>
>>54001927
Yes, RAM usage is higher. It looks and feels like a moden desktop (again personal preference) that average user might use/like so I guess it's justified.
>>54001949
Thanks for the advice. I'll try Gnome 3.20 this week, tried Fedora with latest stable Gnome (can't remember which version) and it was slow/sluggish on this machine, YMMV.

Looked nice until I saw that bottom bar. Even the bottom bar looked nice til I looked over at that system tray. Something about it just looks awful and I don't know what. tbqh the left side of the task bar isn't great, either. Inconsistent icon sizing. Why is Firefox's launcher nice and big but its actual entry in the taskbar is way smaller for some reason.

Glad to hear, fellow KDE user.

Things from my experience:
-The grsecurity kernel may cause some issues (menu shortcuts takes a long time to load, don't know about other DEs though. Currently using the Zen kernel, shit runs faster than a racing car)
-SDDM/Login manager is actually still shitty, hope they fix this soon
-Avoid qBittorrent, I cannot configure it not to start itself from the bootup. I use Ktorrent, which is likely to be pre installed in KDE
-Photoshop CS6 (WINE) doesn't like Kwin. You can use it with KDE/Openbox though.
-If you EVER lag, toggle desktop effects: Alt+Shift+F12

I want to use manjaro but there is something causing my computer to lock up which usually happens when I plug my laptop back in... It locks up pretty wierd where I can move the mouse cursor but cant click or type and if there was a video playing the video will stop but the sound will keep playing it didn't matter what DE I used it did the same with KDE or XFCE. The same thing happens with Tumbleweed so its not manjaro its just something that hasn't been pushed through to ubuntu or its derivatives yet

I always notice that the shitposters who hate on Manjaro always have the same posting style and always cite the exact same "evidence". I'm convinced at this point that it's just one anon who fucked up guys kernel and blames Manjaro for it.

Fuck, this is why I usually don't mobilepost. Meant to type 'his'.

There is The Arch Way. An admirable ambition.

But, to me, Arch is the way. Which is a different but complementary ambition for Arch to become the preeminent upstream distro which gives life to numerous other distros, changing the course of Linux.

We all have much to benefit from Arch.

I think you mean Fedora.

Easily fixable. OP is just using the wrong launcher widget.
>>
>>54001927
Not a fair comparison as that's KDE 4.*, not Plasma 5.*. OP is using Plasma 5, not KDE 4.

Some anons are just bitter cunts that hate on everything. This is their only interaction with other humans, so don't go too hard on them anon.

WPS office is a pretty good ms office replacement, it works really fine with ms office documents and has a ribbon interface like the microsoft one

its literally a chinese clone
>>
"KDE is so customizable!" and yet every screenshot looks like some grey/black cinnamon bullshit. If you want a 90s window manager experience, stick to xfce/mate. Cyberpunk ricing? Tiling WMs. Something that looks actually "modern"? OSX. KDE is an ugly monstrosity. Even vanilla android phone menus look better. (Manjaro is alright though).
>>
openSUSE KDE was always somehow my unfillfuled love

I am on arch+i3 but still love KDE
>>
>>54020932
Which is better, WPS or LibreOffice?
>>
>>54020940
I know you are trolling, but the aesthetic problem with KDE isn't customization.
The problem is more with applications UI being cluttered, full of misaligned elements, and looking inhomogeneous and incoherent on a whole. No amount of theming and custom colors can solve this problem.

Just slap the Arc theme onto Xfce or Gnome, and they look tidy and modern.
>>
>>54020940
>I dislike something therefore it is objectively bad
You sound like a fucking child.
>>
>>54021161
Are you sure about that? Because I'm running KDE Plasma 5.6.1 and it feels pretty good. UI isn't cluttered or misaligned; in fact, I'd say that it's quite minimal. Everything also feels quite homogeneous.
What specifically caused you to say that?
>>
>>54021161
this checks out, I use arc and numix on gnome and cinnamon to make them look less shitty
>>
>>54001038
enjoy breaking it as soon as you update system
>>
>>54021308
What do you mean? I've been running Manjaro KDE for a couple of months now without any problems.

? what are you talking about?

Kind of unrelated to the thread, but I switched from Mint to Manjaro KDE and the battery life on my laptop almost doubled. Is there a reasonable explanation for this?

Some examples with KDE 5.5 from the Kubuntu 16.04 beta 2 live iso, default settings. I could probably find similar glitches in every KDE program.
>inb4 >Kubuntu
Also I'm not trying to shit on KDE as they've done some impressive work recently, but they've still have a long way to go with UI tweaking.

Some of these glitches might or might not be fixed in 5.6.

General:
>default window border thickness makes some things look misaligned (like the v-align of the Dolphin status bar, or scrollbars on every single non-maximized window) when in fact they aren't
>thumbnails are sometimes above content (dolphin, konversation config in the screenshot), sometimes bellow (gwenview side-panel, terminal default mode)

Dolphin:
>Pretty good overall
>having the zoom bar and the free space gauge next to each other is somewhat confusing

Gwenview:
>why is the filepath area grey when it's white on Dolphin?
>side pane slightly misaligned
>strange looking border/padding above the side-panel thumbnails
>side-panel thumbnails and status bar have different font size, looks jarring
>zoom bar with icons and different size compared to Dolphin

Konversation:
>different padding for adjacent elements
>inhomogeneous padding in several config dialogs

Linux noob here, I just recently installed ubuntu 15.10. Did I fuck up? Should I install a different distro? What do I do to make ubuntu look not so poopy?
>>
>>54022866
I really like Manjaro, but you should just pick whatever you like. Try out several live ISOs and choose the one you like the best.
>>
>>54022990
I don't really know enough about Linux at this point to know what I should be looking for when trying different distros. I think I'll just try to make ubuntu look like os x and pretend I'm using a macbook.
>>
>>54022316
I have always disliked Kubuntu ever since they released a version that had a broken network manager plasmid back in the early KDE 4 days. Its probably better now but I would suggest just using OpenSUSE for KDE
>>
>>54023035
>I don't what I should be looking for when trying different distros
You should be looking for something that you like. Full stop.
If you really need recommendations, though, I'd recommend trying out Mint, Fedora, Ubuntu, and Manjaro (KDE and Cinnamon).
Or if you hate yourself try out Gentoo.

You're kind of short about open source technologies are you ?
