I seriously don't understand why someone would want for linux to never success massively on the desktop space. If we don't count linux currently the only option for most computers (because mac can only be officially used on apple's hardware) is windows and it comes bundled with every computer. Actually if we consider that every computer sold increases by itself the windows market share the fact that 1 of each 100 persons (if we assume 1% marketshare) choose by their own will to use linux means that the amount of linux users grows with the desktop market.

Windows users will not be affected if windows loses for example 20% of its marketshare, they'll still have support from all third parties secured, in any case linux users are the ones who have something valuable to win if it success, but windows users doesn't win anything valuable if it don't success, in fact they have more to lost because competition is good for customers.

Let's assume for a moment that linux starts defeating windows in efficiency with videogames, which is something that actually can happen with vulkan:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Win10-Linux-Vulkan-Early
this will force MS to make their OS more efficient and to be more carefull on how they treat their users if they don't want to lose a customer.

Consumerfags take it personal because for them everything is an ad for something to opt in to gain social status.

Have you noticed how every attack to linux is either an ad-hominem or directed towards comparing it to other available mainstream OS for entirely different purpouses?

It's not really Windows vs GNOME in my case, I just really like how everything feels so smooth and that I can drop windows into separate workspaces, slide through them with keyboard shortcuts, get unobtrusive interactive notifications from my music player, Desktop Search, comfy font rendering (well not really gnome related, infinality), that neat little dock, "Places" shortcut, and a ton of other things. Some you could probably do in Windows I'm sure, but like GNOME just works perfectly with my use case

Use what works best for you, I'm not going to shove my software choice down anyone's throat
