I need help with ffmpeg to re-encode bunch of files to be of smaller size.
What should I set my variables to?

ffmpeg -i file.whatever -c:v libx264 -c:a libvorbis -crf 22 -preset fast output.mp4

What can I do to make the files even smaller in size?

Weird question; can I get an estimate on how much a sewing machine costed around 1985?

Hancock Fabrics is liquidating and shutting down so I'm thinking of picking up a brand new one with the money from selling an outdated gaming computer. I guess knowing the original price of my mother's helps with rationalizing the purchase.

If video isn't important as audio you can set the bitrate to 1-1.5M you'll still get decent video.
Also re-encoding the audio will lead to degrade in audio quality.
However if you do want to compress audio use libmp3lame.

Yes
Plug it into a laptop or something and see if it still gives you the same problem. If it does it's just a hardware problem with the keyboard itself. I doubt you're going to have much luck with it but you could try popping the keys off and brushing the area with a little toothbrush or something. Only reason I suggest that is it has helped when keys like to stick for me, can't guarantee it will do anything for you.

You make a live USB stick and boot from that. Alternatively, try to set it up so you can choose which OS to boot from your HDD (if you fuck up all your shit is gone but GNU/Linux will run smoother).
But really you should just delete Windows (possibly do a minimal reinstall for just games if you absolutely must) and install any GNU/Linux distro that comes with lots of pre-installed packages. Xubuntu is nice.

Windows has a CLI.
GNU/Linux (what you're referring to as Linux, blah blah) is not a programming language, it's an operating system just like Windows, except it's free (as in freedom). It has a CLI that you can use (it's called bash and should be available on Windows as well), but it also has various desktop environments like GNOME, KDE, XFCE that allow you to work with windows, status bars etc. as you normally would.

Making a live USB stick is easy, takes no time at all and will allow you to experience GNU/Linux fully without having to commit to it.

What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I can run all the programs I need. Those that I can't either run in Wine (try to avoid that) or I might consider dual-booting.
Everyday stuff like office programs, programming, browsing, music, videos etc. you can do perfectly well in GNU/Linux.

Take a list of software that you use daily.
1. See if it runs on linux
2. See if there's an alternarive that runs on linux
3. See if it runs with wine
4. Run a virtual machine or dual boot

The benefits will mostly come as personal improvement, learning and undertsanding. There's also fun to be had, if you're into that.

Really, this is an interest board. Something being useful in production should come second to fun here.

Malwarebytes works great but no real time scans, only manual, still the most recommended AV there is around.

Adwcleaner is a must have to get rid of adware and browser malware extensions.

JRT is just malwarebytes with extras but not good enough to replace it.

uBlock Origin is an ablocker that blocks stuff from connecting to your PC instead of just hiding it, like a host flie for your browser.

No, most important windows stuff runs as a service, not as an executable on startup. You won't break your computer that easily. In fact, booting up windows in safe mode disables all your startup programs for the session, among other things so try that if you want.

That said, if you disable everything you'll probably disable something you would normally use, such as your audio driver control panel, your anti-virus interface, mostly stuff that sits in the tray bar (bottom right of your desktop).

Is there any way I could fake my ping in online P2P games? For example let's say I would normally have a terrible connection with someone, would there be any way for me to appear as an excellent connection to the person?

Only on some games, namely HL2-based games like TF2, and those servers are still going to kick you if they have a ping limit set.

There is no sure-fire way to fake this information, as ping is from your game client to the server; a VPN would not circumvent this.

Afternoon, /g/. I'd like some insight on a small problem I'm having.

I've got an old, old netbook - a Lenovo Ideapad S10. I think I got it from my uncle, and the hard drive died way back when in 2009 or something. It's in working condition, but the battery is totally crap. Can't stay on without being plugged in, which I don't mind that much.

So, the story goes like this. I have a few laptops I'm not using anymore, and I thought it would be possible to take out the HDD out of one and pop it into the netbook, format the disk, and re-purpose it for light web browsing or something. I was actually planning to learn linux this way. I made a boot USB for a distro I saw a while back called Korora, but it didn't exactly want to load properly. So, I tried out Xubuntu. When I attempt to install it, however - the hard drive has a heart attack or something. It'll start making clicking, grindy noises, and then the system hangs after a while. I tried using Xubuntu directly from the USB, and accessing the disk at all hangs the system.

What could the issue be? Is the HDD not right for the netbook? Should I buy a new HDD and try it? The HDD in question is from an old Toshiba laptop, with an install of Vista on it.
>>
>>53988330
Why you prefer using a "old, old netbook" instead of more powerful laptops?

How about checking the health of the HDD with appropiate software? They do not live more than 5 years...
>>
>>53987815
I see.
then is there a way to make ffmpeg pause/resume or something like that?
>>
Been having issues with what I assume is my CPU overheating, I bought a new GPU And the issue started, generally the PC will lock up and I'll have to restart windows and it'll have trouble starting and blue screen..should I just do a full reinstall?

I'll try checking the disk health though. Thanks for the input.

>>53988460
If I had to make a wild guess, I would say your GPU is overheating and not your CPU. Make sure the air flow in your system is good and if you have all of your parts cramped together in a small box it will create airflow constrictions and cause everything to heat up way faster than normal.

Alternatively, when you got new GPU, did you make sure that your current PSU had enough energy to power it as well and everything else in your system comfortably? Some GPUs can eat energy. I'm not sure of all the details of what it can cause, I would assume your computer not getting enough power would maybe cause a BSOD.

Also, install some type of software that can read PC Hardware temperatures. It will tell you what you need to know is overheating.

I'd also like you to take all of this with a grain of salt because I am only somewhat certain that the advice I'm giving is completely valid.

It's identical to or very similar to the UNIX hostname standard -- iirc hostnames are 1-64 characters, consist of letters and numbers and _ and must start with a letter. 8.1 does not botnet if you make a local non MS account, and when it asks whether to use recommended settings, don't and turn off the various switches. GWX Control Panel is a must on both 7 and 8.1, as is being careful with updates. Single click settings in 7 and 8.1 will help, as >>53984432 said. Apart from that, it's mostly preference. Want to use a little start menu in the corner that is probably cramped for touch, or a full screen thing with large tiles? Want fullscreen apps with large buttons, or compact desktop apps with usually more features (8.1 has both for most apps but the touch ones are easier to get to by default).

>>53986585
They're identical unless one is made from a better source than the other. Or of course if you rip with something that doesn't make an accurate copy. CDs are hard to rip properly -- you want to use EAC or something cdparanoia based like the command line ripit on Linux.

Hello.

I'm new to linux, but I'm really trying to make the switch this time.

I'm on the latest version of elementary OS, which I believe is based on Ubuntu 14.04.

I want to install mpv, but I don't feel safe compiling stuff myself. I want to install it simply by typing "sudo apt-get install X" in the terminal. Does anyone know what its name is?
>>
>>53989051

you can simply try it out, programs for linux don't often share a name:
sudo apt-get install mpv

if that doesn't work you can investigate further

Similar to him, I have a reasonably powerful i7 Thinkpad with 16 GB RAM, but right now I'm using a shitty old AspireOne to shitpost. Slow little AMD C-60 and 4 GB RAM. I can also phone tether but not do heavy things over it since reception isn't that great.

>>53988719
Depends on board. Some boards are tricky to read accurate temps from. I've seen some Speccy screenshots showing nutty and obviously not valid temps like 127C.

>>53988828
If you don't like MPC HC, try VLC. Only flaws people have been able to point out are that font rendering on subtitles is not quite as pretty, and colors look washed out if you set your GPU overlay color range incorrectly to TV instead of PC. Also, MPC HC can work with MadVR to enhance video while VLC can't.

>>53988923
But you don't look at the controls, you put it fullscreen and look at the beautiful video it's rendering. Do you prefer a player that has pretty looking controls, or one that displays enhanced, prettier video?

there's several potential options;
1. clean dust out of the machine, reapply thermal paste. these should be done if the machine ran cooler when it was new, depending on your skills, you might need to take it in to a repair shop to do this for you
2. underclock the machine (either in the BIOS, or setting a lower state in software)
3. run a separate script to periodically pause and resume ffmpeg, for example;
while true; do pkill -STOP ffmpeg; sleep 60; pkill -CONT ffmpeg; sleep 60; done

(signals ffmpeg to stop executing, waits 60 seconds, signals to continue, waits 60 seconds, and repeats. so ffmpeg is running for a minute, then stops for a minute. adjust times to suit)

Well, first of all, the if statement is always going to be true so you could drop it.

Step 1:
a = 2
print a
while a < 100:
a += 2
print a

Second step is to avoid doing special handling the first time, as there really isn't any point to it.

Step 2:
a = 0
while a < 100:
a += 2
print a

Now, this is just fine. But I would consider doing this as a third step, namely:

for a in range(2, 100, 2):
print a

I upgraded one of my windows 7 hard drives to 10 and my usb wifi [a tp link 722n] driver has been causing windows 10 to bluescreen on network disconnect which is a problem since I recently moved to the edge of my wireless range

can I install one of those generic open source wifi drivers that come bundled with ubuntu in the official driver's place? I'm hoping to prevent more blue screens and hopefully maintain connection.

>Have one shitty netbook
>Want to have one dedicated "computer" to store safely my bitcoin wallets, and some other delicate files(got already a backup plan, nas etc)

-Someone wants to buy the netbook for 120€ (acer aspire one d260)
-I'm considering I can buy a Raspberry Pi/similar for this and other autistic projects I will...

So do I sell the netbook and buy 2 Raspberry Pi? Or just use this netbook for the manage of important files and stuff and just buy one Raspberry Pi for autistic stuff?

Also alternatives to consider for the raspberry pi?

MEAN stack -- exposition.

Procedural/Structural programmer. Mainly C/C++/C#. Did PHP. Don't like WebDev in general (too mediocre).

I know x86 and 8085. Recently have being dick-slapped all day with jizz of high JS density. (Talking about NodeJS and MEAN)

Should I learn this shit or I don't have to?

If so, convince me; gimme good reasons to.
