Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

i just tried stock tf2 under linux on my x220

and... it actually plays pretty well, i only got very occasional and short lag, lowest ive seen was 20fps but that lasted about under a second...

ran much better than it did under windows for some reason too. prolly can get more fps if i put on some low quality tweaks but honestly, it doesnt really need it.

im honestly surprised it ran better under linux, with a generic driver and opengl and all

I don't mind sata 2, I'm going to keep all my audio samples on the 1tb hard drive and the actual tracks for live sets on the ssd, that way I can quickly jot down an idea and then get my good samples in there when I finally get home and put it on the dock.
This thing came with a 120gb corsair ssd, this laptop was such good value man.
If I get 2 years from the 201 I'll be absolutely over the moon

Which 12" | 13" | 14" business laptops of about the same age and specs as X220 | T420 have trackpoints?
The 2560p, 8460p, 2570p, 8470p and the E6420 and the E6320 all do, and the E6220 does not.

I read that the T420's screen is not as good as the x220's, and that the x220 has better battery life. Shouldn't that be a higher priority?
>>
>>53983922
You can temporary disable it by creating another user account with a typical name of a teenage boy such as "R0xxor_04 of Darkness" or indicating the machine that your time is unvaluable anyhow by installing gentoo
>>
>>53983993
The X220 has a better screen when it is equipped with the IPS 1366x768 display, it's viewing angle is way better, the T420 can have the higher resolution of 900p though, depends on user preference, just like the trade off of battery life with the bigger T420 notebook.

>>53983993
What the fug m8, since when is 1366x768 better than 1600x900?

X220 IPS is more pleasant to read text and watch videos on.
>>
>>53984198
Absolutely, but the extra screen estate is always handy. I have both and still prefer the T420 for any serious work. But the IPS in X220 is miles better outdoors even with lower resolution.

I don't know if getting ThinkPad is a good idea. That magnesium shroud after few year oxidizes and gets tired and broken. That leads to broken hinges. What do you guys think? No such problems? The model is R60. Even tho the casing is plastic it has same hinges and magnesium shroud as the T model. And I mean that part of the magnesium shroud, where the hinges are socketed, have broken. The hinges worked pretty badly for a while. I didn't notice, because my brother was using it.

So for on my T420 I'm upgrading:

- 850 Evo msata SSD
- 1TB HDD
- 1080 IPS Screen ( When I have the money)
- New trackpad sticker (I peeled old one off)
- i7 QC possibly
What think /g/?

i have an x220 and i was on a tight budget, so i got a good deal on mine for $140, 8gb ram, i5 2.5ghz

i use it for school stuff, just taking notes, online tests, stuff like that. it handles everything like a champ

i use it also for just browsing the internet, light stuff. i never felt it slow down or bog down. this keyboard is so awesome too, i love using it and it feels so natural. the build quality is awesome, i just keep getting satisfied by all the features. i didn't realize it has a dust filter under the fan so no dust can go in and clog up the heatsink, most consumer laptops dont have that so i know this thing will last

only things that suck about it is- the TN screen is pretty bad. honestly, the resolution is fine for me, but the viewing angles on the TN screen is kinda bad... but an IPS upgrade is possible, and it's useable, not anything im kicking myself over at all.

battery life could be a little better i guess, but im not at school for that long anyways and if i were, there are plenty of power outlets that i can use there

the integrated graphics sucks. i just wish it had the HD4000 then it'd be perfect, but it plays the games i like perfectly so i dont really have a reason to complain. i didnt buy this laptop to play games anyways

so overall, i love it. probably the best $140 ive spent on tech, knowing that this laptop will still last me a few more years

Interesting. I wonder if it's for me?

Long story short, I've always been a desktop-only person and since I'll be moving to Japan I need to be able to take my work there.

I use my computer for anime, work communication/scheduling and music production. I'm thinking maybe buying an X1 carbon for work related and anime use and building a decent tower when I arrive in Japan for music production (so I don't need to be limited to a laptop for music production). I don't know if that's a sound idea, though. What do you guys think?
>>
I am thinking about picking up a couple T420s laptops.

One is in near perfect condition and one is in rough condition, which I would use for spare parts. They both have the i5 2520M, 8GB or 16GB RAM, and no hard drives but probably caddies. I would get a mSATA drive anyway. I think they both have the 1600x900 screens.

I will get an employee discount, so I could probably get the pair for between $120 and $150. Good deal?
>>
>>53992261
I think a used x220 or T420 thinkpad will serve you just as well, but if you wanna spend the extra money for lighter weight and a little bit quicker processer its a good computer. Keep in mind it has some annoying quirks like soldered ram but its the price you pay for a lighter weight.
Also Japan, nice man living the weeb dream. Whatever you chose good luck!!

/g/entlemen, please do excuse the dullness of this question,

yet I would truly appreciate any input on whether there is anything else worth considering (or even existing) aside from T, X, E6*** and elitebooks when I want a decent 12 to 14" laptop with a clit for 200eur

And btw, what is that with the hp model naming system? Apparently, the last two digits neatly indicate generation, same way as with dells and thinkpads, but hell, what was their thinking behind naming a 15incher and 14incher of the same family, same generation, a 85** and 84** respectively, and the 12incher - a 25**?

The mixing is done on the mixer. All the computer does is read the timecode and output the audio at the appropriate position. For years I was "proud" of not relying on any technology to assist me and only using vinyl records (the real reason was that I was too poor to invest in hardware because I spent all my money on records). Then when I finally got into the whole vinyl emulation thing, I figured that xwax would be the only halal program to use since it's completely stripped down of all extraneous features, to the point of having to pass all the configuration options and track library as command line arguments.

I still have my eee 701 in a box somewhere. I don't remember how but I managed to install Slackware on the 4GB SSD. It survived a fall into a stream and worked flawlessly for another three years before the pixels started to burn out. Now that was a neat little bitch. Of course, back in 2008+1 you could still use the web on an 800x480 display with a complete PoS cpu...

Hey guys
I am about to buy a t420 8gb 160GB SSD and i5 2540M for 250€ in A-Condition and 12 moths warranty.

I want to upgrade it with a 500GB HDD by replacing the CD-Drive using an adapter.
Also I am looking for a way to use my LTE sim.
For the desktop experience I just buy a cheap docking station for 12€.
The only thing I am really pissed is the price for a new battery pack 90€.

Anything you would recommend? Any ideas? Suggestions?

well what I like to do when I get a new laptop is run the laptop till the battery dies, charge it up all the way, run it down, charge it up again, and then it'll be 'broken in' while you do this, I suppose you could use a stopwatch on your phone or another computer to see how long it runs till it dies.

wait what? Is leaving your laptop plugged in while being charged 100% already a bad thing? i thought there's enough intelligence in the charging mechanism that it doesn't harm the battery in any way, like overcharging protection or something? we're past the Ni-Cd era, right?

Hey anons, i'm looking for a really cheap buy, but one that isn't total mess. What would you recommend me? I was thinking about getting e.g. x61 or something like that. Would love to hear what you have to say.

Leaving it plugged in only kills it if you're a dumbass like me who used to leave his plugged in for three years, kills it, and wonders why he can't take it to starbucks. They do have options in the thinkvantage software to stop it from charging past 80 percent, to keep it from dying.

I recommend getting the T400 14 incher or T500 if a 15 inch turns you on, they've got the newer 45nm Core 2 duo, which is decent, and DDR3 ram. That 65nm core 2 duo is really aging.

It shoudn't harm it that much but it will shorten its life. Li-ion batteries have a number of charging limit. If it's consonantly plugged in it will get charged often, because it's slowly loosing charge even if not used.
The best think is to unplug battery at 40% charge and charge it to 100% and discharge it to 40% for storage every month.
Of course if you use it often just unplug it at 40% when u use main.
