TL;DR:
>windows 7 and 8.1 on skylake architecture get 18 months left for updates
>following generations only support Windows 10

daily reminder that Microsoft will get you off windows 7/8.1 by any means necessary
>>
>>53979996
That's good. Windows 10 is superior anyway.

If you worry about the botnet you really should be using GNU/Linux.
>>
>>53979996
I will just use broadwell or haswell then.
>>
>>53979996
>Buy high end unlocked processor close to the 18 month mark cutoff
>Keep it around for a good 5 years or so
>Probably would have committed suicide before I need to upgrade
Hah jokes on them
>>
thats fine

skylake is dogshit anyways
>>
Typical Microsoft trying to scare the "it has a bigger number so it must be better" crowd into upgrading, aka hardcore mindless intelfags.

Now a mid range PC like the 2550k or 8320 on the other hand has no reason to upgrade.
>>

> worry about

it's not a worry, it's been proven.

Like he said. Use linux or BSD if you don't want botnet.
>>

>d-dont make threads about the botnet j-just switch if you dont like it

That's sweet but microsoft already backpedaled once, they'll backpedal again.
Remember that it used to be 'no support', but now it's 18 months. Governments will end up paying microsoft at this rate.
>>
Through July 17, 2018, new Skylake devices on the supported list will also be supported with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. During the support period, these systems should be upgraded to Windows 10 to continue receiving support after the period ends. After July 17 2018, Microsoft will continue to deliver all critical Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 security updates to Skylake devices until the respective end of support dates.
>>
I understand what they are saying. I'm current making a product for my engineering degree which uses USB, and it would be great to use Windows' built in drivers so that users don't have to install custom drivers themselves and instead have it plug-and-play. But because some people are still on Windows 7 that's a no-go. Windows 7 and earlier don't support isochronous transfers in their built-in USB drivers, so I have no choice but to make custom drivers anyway. I wish people would just upgrade their software, not doing so is bad for the user himself, and bad for developers.

Yeah, straight to Linux.

daily reminder that you can't do shit about that

No matter how many angry posts you'll post, no matter how many cute animu win10 images you'll find, majority of users switched right after first "FREE UPGRADE" window and half of minority switched after various attempts of forcing it on users. You can't stop this anon.

Going from xp to 8 was hard. Going from 8 to 10 is fucking trivial and hardly changes shit. There's no reason for gov's not to.

>>53982012
Well, gee, isn't /g/ full of cucks anyways?
>>
>>53982134
8 and 10? 8 is a tablet os, 10 is desktop
>>
>>53982148
What are you on about?
8 and 8.1 where for both tablets, laptops and desktops.
10 installs over each, but on tablets it defaults to a more fullscreen interface.
You-you guys on /g/ do realise laptops and desktops where actually sold, and upgradable to 8, right?
>>
>>53982163
8 and 8.1 are USELESS unless you are on a touchscreen, its NOT an desktop OS, because you could not disable Metro by default (start8 does not count). Useless mouse UI = not a real desktop OS-

8's start menu is complete shit. It's terrible to navigate with a mouse and the searching was less effective than 7 or 10. 10's start menu searching is pretty damn good, slightly better than 7 I'd say. Microsoft acknowledged the total fuckup that was 8 by putting the start menu back on desktops by default.
>>
>>53981447
>don't have to install custom drivers themselves and instead have it plug-and-play
You're going to be a bad engineer.
There are USB devices that come with drivers loaded ON THE FUCKING HADRWARE. No need to download shit off the internet, just jam it in.
>>
>>53982412
>just jam it in
>that's what she said...to her (my wife's) child's father
>>
>>53982412
I suspect many of the devices you are thinking about are actually using the built-in windows drivers I am talking about, not "drivers loaded on the hardware". Things like mouses, keyboards, USB drives, all have their own USB classes that automatically uses windows' built-in drivers. The thing is these don't require high speed isochronous transfers so they also work on win 7, but my product does.

Of course it's possible to have the device automatically install a custom driver when plugging it in, but this increases complexity, you'd have to have custom bootloaders with file storage, OS detection and autorunning, and as said it is a bachelor degree project so we have very limited time for development, and cost is also an issue.
>>

>>windows 7 and 8.1 on skylake architecture get 18 months left for updates
I disabled updates a few years ago.

The only "features" I will miss out on is the spying shit, like the always active microphone for cortana. Disabled updates at Windows 10 release anyway, so this doesn't matter to me.
>>
>>53983947
Enjoy security holes and outdated frameworks and drivers
>>
>>53983708
If it's just a bachelor project, why do you care if someone uses it?
>>53983978
Give me any actual examples and I'll be the judge if it's worth surrendering my freedom for.
>>
>>53984019
>If it's just a bachelor project, why do you care if someone uses it?

1. Because even if it is a bachelor project, I still want to design a user friendly product, as that's what good engineers do, and the bachelor project is about demonstrating engineering proficiency.

And 2. Because this is the shit I will have to deal with because of people who don't update when I get a job and design real products as well. And other engineers do as well. Obstinacy is wasting millions if not billions of dollars worldwide in efforts to support deprecated systems.

Daily reminder that Microsoft pushed literal adware through their update service thats suppost to be used for security patches and with Windows 10 you won't be able to not install these types of adware updates when Microsoft inevitably does it again.

but i already only install critical security updates, which i will still get until 2023 (like microsoft promised).

>>

This is bullshit. MS will end mainstream support for old OSes anyway, Skylake or not Skylake.

If I buy skylake I will have to upgrade to 10 at some point. So i just wont buy skylake. Sorry if I worded it weird senpai
>>
>>53986704
You act like you're forced to use metro apps. The desktop environment outdoes win7 easily. Just use the search option on 8.1 to open your programs. That's all you're bitching over

>not using shortcuts for shit he wants
>not knowing you can right click win8.1's start button to openmost system tools.
>>
>>53986757
>not knowing you can right click win8.1's start button to openmost system tools.
Man, everybody uses that even in Win10
Does not mean you should be using workaround for generally understood simple tasks. The problem is people like you accepting it, like fucking cucks.
>>
>>53986709
That would be: "stay on 8.1" => "never buy skymeme"
"I will never buy a skylake processor because I want to stay on 8.1"
No worries, familiam, I got your back.

>>53986704
>>53982209
at first I thought you're just baiting, but you are serious.
If any metro apps or screens or whatever stops you from being productive then it's most likely you.
>>53986858
or people like you, sperging out over every little change
btw if you think 10 is not usable like windows 7 you've never tried it

>has to right-click start to get to settings
>calls boss: "Hey boss that new OS is way too complicated, we need to set a new deadline 2 years later, I can't work like this, it's too hard"

Yeah, cool bro, but I don't want others thinking for me, I like what I like and want options.
>>
>>53986892
When did I say 10 is not usable?
I just said that the right-click menu is useful in 10 too. Win10 is actually better performance wise on same hardware then 7.
>>
>>53987273
>Implying everyone else didn't make their own decisions as well.

Ok, I think I've taken the bait enough for one day, nobody is dumb enough to think metro apps are all there is on win8.1.
>>
>>53987778
Not talking about metro app's, but the whole Start menu etc
>>
>>53982013

Ive been using Win10 for quite a while now and havent seen a single ad anywhere within the os
