I have 3GB of ram. With chromium, I had been struggling, because I couldn't have more than 6-8 tabs open. After I tried Firefox, I don't understand how, my laptop can now handle more than 20 fucking tabs. I still want to understand why is this possible. Wasn't Google Chrome's memory leaks fixed? At the moment, I have 12 fox tabs open, plus mpv, bittorrent, and ffmpeg converting parts of the video I'm watching to webms, 1.62G/2.93G used. With chromium this would have been 2.89G/2.93G + 2G of swap, which as I remember, is an awful experience.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

A pagefile is useless (same goes for swap) if you have 16 or more memory. Hell, I bet even with 12 you won't need it. We are using 64bit apps, with lots of RAM for them, pagefiles where created when RAM was low and pricey, only needed when using old legacy app's who could crash without one.
>>
>>53979509
What is humour?
>>
>>53982463
I guess I still need it since i've got 8GB of RAM
Just for make things clear, I've never had any low memory error before until some days ago, and when I get it, RAM usage is always below 5GB. It's like the opposite of memory leaks.
>>
>>53982534
Running programs what eat memory with 8GB of ram then of course you need a pagefile. Point is that having lots of RAM you don't haveto worry about slowdowns caused by paging.
>>
>>53982556
Well, adding more RAM could fix things, not sure
I've read somewhere that people with 16GB got that low memory error aswell, not sure if it was an actual memory leak or just a glitch in the game or malware.
Time to uninstall this 65GB of unplayable shit
>>
8gb out of 12gb tho I was running a couple more intense programs like blender and photoshop.

Do this:
>if you are a 8gig poorfag just buy another 8gig stick
>try it out, run all kinds of shit, measure, check, etc
>seeing that 16gig is faster for doing lots of shit at once go return the 8gig stick to the shop and come shitpost on /g/ saying 8gig is still better because you're too poor to spend on RAM
>>
>>53982787
a program does not change the amount of memory it uses according to how much physical ram your computer has left.
It makes no distinction between pagefile and physical memory. If it maxes out your physical it will then start using the pagefile.
>>
>>53982819
And using the pagefile is a major slowdown, are you too dumb to understand that disk access, specially if (lets face it, if one has 8gigs of ram, he wont have more than one SSD, if even that) slows down everything, also the more over limit you are the slower it gets.
>>
>>53982867
my used memory was 7/8GB hence the pagefile was never even once touched
>>
>>53982900

No VM and no insane amount of tabs?

Probably around 10GiB. During gayming of course. Without either of those three it's 'bout impossible to peak that limit unless you have a 10GiB file open in some kind of workshop which is your fault for having such a grossly oversized file in the first place.
