I know Irfanview is old as fuck but I am yet to find anything better.

For those that have replaced it, what have you replaced it with?

Also general apps thread.
>>
>>53976453
y'know now that I think about it, it's probably one of the oldest if not the oldest program still in use, though I do believe it regularly gets security updates and new plugins added as new formats come along and become prevalent

WinRAR is older.

The Windows NT kernel is older

If HoneyView could display webm like IV does I'd replace it.
>>
>>53976496

Likewise, save for legacy programs at work.

>>53976855

Thanks, I'll have a look.

>>53976728

Why would you not just use 7-zip?

Chocolatey and Ninite both have it available, and if you're not using either of those tools after a fresh install you're doing it wrong

>>53976745

True, but it's being updated. AFAIK Irfanview hasn't had updates for a while
>>
I use image glass. Is irfanview any better?
>>
>>53977108

IrfanView is honestly great - it has everything you want an image viewer to have, and nothing you don't.

It's still being updated (last change 2016-03-10) but it's interface is a little on the Windows 98 side of the UI spectrum.

Have just had to do a Windows reinstall on my Chinkpad (tried to switch to Ubuntu, but too many Windows-specific programs I couldn't replace) so it's always a good time to think "is there a better option?"

Last time it was Clover and Directory Opus that replaced Windows Explorer, but this time Irfanview gets the scrutiny.

I've been using image glass for the past few weeks or so, ever since I reformatted my laptop and so far it's been fine.
Can irfanview actually do anything better or does it take up less space or something?
>>
It depends on what you're using it for.
>>
>>53977027
Why would I want to use Ninite when Ninite doesn't even let you manually set where you want programs to get installed?

Why would I want to use Ninite or Chocolatey when I install my programs on a separate partition and just let them create registry entries by opening them on a fresh install?
>>
>>53977339

Why on earth wouldn't you just accept the default settings? There's no benefit whatsoever in having them on a different partition.

Linux would seriously not be for you
>>
>>53977220

Not enough hamburger menus and flat icons for you?

There's no GUI better than Windows 98, trying to make IrfanView more modern looking would ruin it.
>>
>>53977463

In an image viewer that's exactly what you want, to maximize usable screen real estate for the actual picture.

Irfanview's keyboard shortcuts means that you wouldn't need the menus anyway, I have most of them memorised.

The more I think about it the more I think I should just keep it...

>>53977247

ImageGlass actually looks pretty good, the only thing it's missing is batch functions.
>>
>>53976453
I'm in the middle of replacing it with JPEGView.

JPEGView advantages over Irfanview:
1) JPEGView is faster
2) JPEGView has a right-click menu, which allows you to ditch toolbars.
3) JPEGView allows you to set your own keyboard shortcuts

Irfanview advantages over JPEGView:
1) Irfanview can open PSDs
2) Irfanview allows you to play, pause, and step through GIFs

Both are missing key features imo.
>>
>>53976453
HoneyView is what I've gone with. Requires some tweaking from default to get it feeling comfy but that's just some menu options.
>>
>>53978060
>>53976453
This, honeyview can get tweaked to a bare bones image viewer if you want it minimal as fug with with just the image and nothing more.
>>
>>53978145
But you can't crop with Honeyview. That should be a deal breaker.
>>
>>53980705

Well Honeyview is out of the picture then. That's one of the best things about Irfanview.

I'm just gonna stick with it I think
>>
>>53976453
I still use it to screencap. Hit printscreen button and instant screencap of desktop.

For general viewing of images I use impression eyes, I don't need an image viewer that comes with an editor when I have photoshop for editing.
>>
>>53976453
JPEGView for Windows (supports more than just JPEG they need to change that shit)

Viewnior for Linux
>>
Nomacs. No issues with it yet. Pretty fast, can crop, loads gif and webm and even psd files.
>>
>>53977489
Honeyview is what you want, you can disable all borders and menus and map shortcuts yourself it's dumb how it's customisable.
Only downfall is no webm support but it's worth it for me.

Holy shit, Directory Opus, brings back memories, Amiga fuck yeah.
>>
>>53982169
Still the only one I've tried that can display DSS and PSD files. Both of which are great for the stuff I do.

I wish I could webm playback to work. Then it would be perfection
>>
>>53982205
Install k-lite codec pack FULL, it will work than (no need to install MPC, just codecs). Be sure the have Irfanview plugins too.
>>
>>53982233
>(no need to install MPC, just codecs)
are you serious? what are you using? WMP?
>>
>>53976453
I've been using it since I can remember, and haven't found a replacement. I use it for all kinds of quick image manipulation, like resize, rotate, slap a small filter on it, change the hue... Photoshop or GIMP take so long to start and I don't have the menu positions of functions memorized there.

But you can also see where the Irfanview author does some shortcuts or weird workarounds. For example, in the "save" window, when you type in a different image extensions it quickly flashes the file extension dropdown. Or UTF8 file names, that's still somewhat broken.
>>
>>53976453
At one point in my life irfanview was the only windows program i missed but imagemagick has totally replaced it for me

SSD, loads as fast as Paint. What are you doing?

If the SSD crashes, toss in garbage bin, buy a new one, and clone from server into new SSD. Not hard.

ok I just started GIMP to actually check, just takes 15 seconds or less, but I still feel more comfortable with Irfanview because I have some shortcuts and menu positions memorized I guess
