Anyone have thoughts on this new format? Will it replace blu ray?
>>
Wasn't Blu Ray already outdated except for video games? I'd say more people stream content now days.
>>
>optical media
>2016
hhahahhahhahaahwhat
>>
Shiet, I still haven't adopted yet.
>>
>>53968843
>not liking physical media
fuck off streamcuck
>>
>>53968789
A lot of people have really retarded bandwidth caps. Mine was 250GB till it got bumped to 350GB a month. Also there is many people that still collect blurays/dvds.
>>
>>53969093
Aside from the fact that i like to own my own shit instead of "streaming" it
>>
While i lile having a collection of stuff ive filled my book cases (all 3) so now i download my media instead
>>
>>53968789
Seeing as they exist I question the logic of assuming it hasn't got a share of the market.

>>53968843
LE EPICALLY MEMED MY FRIEND XD UPBOAT

>>53969093
Bandwidth caps aren't the only reason people buy blu-ray, the quality is far superior to any streaming service out there.
>>
>>53968694
I like it and anyone who brings up streaming as an alternative is a dumbass.
>>
>>53969062
>>53969452
I suppose you fags still use Zip disks?

Face it - as internet speeds grow, removable media becomes more and more of an anachronism.
>>
>>53969502
Fuck off stream cuck
>>
>>53968694
Whats the difference between this new format and just getting a player that can upscale a normal blu ray? Would it be worth upgrading to considering it isn't a DOA format. Please no responses from stream cucks and other fags who don't like owning their media.

>I suppose you fags still use Zip disks?
No, that's fundamentally different, you retarded faggot.

>Face it
Face what you insane idiot?

>as internet speeds grow
They have grown to the point an average connection is FAR more than you need for many purposes, if internet speed where such a crucial factor it would have succeeded years ago. Evidence of this is the sale of said tangible media you hate so much despite the availability of fast connections.

Or do you honestly believe someone who drops $10,000 on a home theater setup is buying Blu-Ray because somehow he can't afford or can't install an internet connection? You probably do, because you're a dumb memester.
>>
>>53969502
A lot of people have movie collections numbering in the hundreds. 4k blu-rays are going to be about 50 gigabytes each, maybe more than that.

People don't want these gigantic files taking up all their space on their hard drives, even if they had large capacity drives. And not so many people even have desktop PCs or NAS.

I like blu-rays because they are made to a standard. I know the image I'm getting is probably the best I can get. Oftentimes a pirate release will have monkeyed around with in an attempt to "improve" the picture, or the bitrate has been reduced to make the file smaller. If I have a good home cinema setup I don't want that, I want the best shit I can get.
>>
>>53968694
Why can't they just use sensible names?
>OpticalDisc 1
>OpticalDisc 2
>OpticalDisc 2016

At least CD was making sense. DVD was making somewhat sense. This shit is just stupid.
>>
>>53969661
No scene group toy around with the image quality. You can also get 1:1 dumps of the video/audio data, but they're 20/30GB+ per movie.
>>
>>53968694
I'm kind of waiting for a neat torrent of an actual 2160p file to see what it does. Every trailer I tried so far had as good as no actual additional details compared to the 1080p one. Unless I see a film that is actually able to use the pixels I'd say it's useless marketing bullshit.
>>
>>53969689
The problem is they used "Ultra" in the name. The went from "Blu-Ray" straight to "Ultra Blu-Ray".

Everybody knows Ultra > Hyper > Mega > Super.
>>
>>53969661
Actually

Three blu rays is about one hundred dollars.

One hdd 1tb is about 70 and can hold 20 or more uhd blu rays.
>>
>>53969609
>being this retarded
just leave
>>
>optical discs
We have absurdly cheap flash storage now, so why would anyone, aside from those who let DRM bend them over, still be using these?
>>
>>53969738
Enjoy your ancient, deprecated technology faggot. :>
>>
>>53969062
I don't stream, nor do I see at as a replacement for physical discs. I buy/rent my movies for licensing, then I torrent said title for compatibility.
>>
>>53969757
And what impediment is there for using DRM on flash memory devices? Absolutely none. What you said makes no sense.

Now if you mean why aren't movies released in flash drives, this question has been asked millions of times and it's still as retarded as it always was.

>>
>>53969820
I'm not suggesting that the distribution system change yet. In order to have a better version of our current movie DRM scheme, better internet infrastructure is required.
Until then, we don't need to feel enslaved to Big Media's fetish for selling their goods on plastic discs, rather find a workaround that works for you, and go on your merry way.

>Three blu rays is about one hundred dollars.

lol no they're not. Do you even know how to shop? Get lots of them on ebay for about $2 a piece, or find them in bargain bins for $5.
>>
>>53970000
Talking about with the content on them and also about uhd blu ray
>>
I'm curious about it but I'm waiting to see if Criterion will jump on the format (I doubt it).
>>
>>53970044
I am talking about with the content on them, but we should discuss the concept of BD-Rs in this thread because it is relevant.

In a few years UHD blu-rays will be five bucks each as well.
>>
>>53970092
And you cant write them? The thing was storage space which you broughr up. A hdd will always be more cost efficient as well as not being limited to storing movies and audio.
>>
>>53970092
I used to collect my animu on DVD-R with beautiful illustrations printed directly on the disc. Now all my stuff is on my HDDs, but I might do that now, you can buy BD-Rs in bulk, and while the price per GB isn't the best it's far from being expensive and it's not like I printed on those discs for practical purposes anyway.
>>
>>53968694
>Will it replace blu ray?
As soon as it gets cracked, yes.
>>
>>53969725
You can blame the ITU-R for that. “Ultra-high definition” is the correct marketing name of the BT.2020 standard.

The Blu-ray organization has nothing to do with it, they're just following the terminology set by others.
>>
>>53970176
Why?

>>53970193
Its funny that they only sell well once they get cracked
>>
>>53968789
>>53968843
The quality of streamed video on websites still sucks compared to blu ray. Especially if the streamed video is sourced from a very grainy movie.

Also this >>53969661

I pirate and buy a lot of my blu rays.
>>
It's mostly the improvements in color space, codec and support for various frame rates that make them better, since a lot of modern films are actually completed on 2k digital intermediates where visual and computer generated effects made in 2k are composited in over high resolution footage sourced from scanned film or higher resolution digital footage. So many of the releases are actually upscaled to 4k. Ironically, the movies that are true 4k tend to be older films shot on film that never went through a digital intermediate process.

I like older films, and silent films, which tended not to be 24 fps, so I'm pretty hyped. Just imagine how nice 70 mm spectacles will look on it.
>>
>>53969702
>No scene group toy around with the image quality.
Name ONE (1) scene group that releases Blu-ray video untouched.

in b4 YIFY
>>
>>53970237
Because I like looking at my discs with beautiful anime girls in them and I am not paying $100 for Japanese BDs with two episodes in them and no subs.
>>
>>53970262
Good info.

Still 4k will outsell 2k, 2k is deprecated already. Additionally i cant wait for 2020 to watch 8k Olympics.

>>
>>53970275
Import Australian ones if money isnt too much of a concern, full madoka blu ray for 60 dollars with a nice box
>>
>>53970262
don't forget 22.2 object-based audio.
>>
>>53970350
oh, and “HDR”
>>
>>53970303
I'm not sure that it will. The 4k blu-ray players are significantly more expensive, and will remain so for at least a year, and the 4k discs have about a ten dollar price premium. 4k film scanning is more expensive than 2k scanning as well, and I imagine the license fees for this new one are higher. Even now, 70 percent of movies are sold on DVD, 30 percent on blu-ray. I get the feeling that since most people are still content with shitty dvd quality, a lot of people will still buy DVD, and most of the people using blu-ray will be slow to switch over until the player costs decline, more of them switch to 4k televisions, and the library of ultra hd blu-ray grows, and even then, traditional blu-ray will be dominant due to the additional price premium ultra-hd imposes, and the fact that those who care about 10-bit color and 4k are already a niche group of a niche group of videophiles.

>>53970364
"HDR" I already referred to as "improved color space".

>>53970319
With import duties and the current dollar exchange, it's gonna get expensive quick. Besides, that's just one animu.
>>
>>53970429
True, i always thought bluray was a more enthusiasts thing since its similar to dvd physically normal people wont really see a difference.

>>53970431
I would buy it for you, ship it as a gift with 1 dollar value or something if you wanted

>>
>>53968694
What is the point? I can buy microSD cards that can hold 4 2-hour-long 4K uncompressed movies for the same price as a stack of blu-ray disks. You know that price is only going to go up.
>>
>>53970000
so... 160 USD per 2TB from ebay...yea...and a blu ray writer costs like another 2TB drive still.

CBGB
Untouched BDs. I could name a few more if I gave enoug of a shit about raw dumps. For remuxes, get P2P shit, otherwise get GPs from PtP if you're really autistic about movie quality after encoding, because scene groups DO fuck with the video too much sometimes, compared to some P2P releases.

Albeit, most scene releases are fine for casual/austistic quality watchers. Some movies are worth to get in high bitrates without aritifact blocking.
>>
>>53977839

>>
>>53975583
i'm kinda disappointed movies/music still aren't released on solid state media like SD cards
though the reason is simple, SD cards may be cheap, but still not nearly as cheap as optical discs
>>
>>53968789
Some have data caps and others have painfully slow connections.

I can't even play 480p videos.
>>
>>53968694

>>

>>
>>53969689
I'm not fond of Ultra Super Duper HD" but what you have there is basically on the opposite extreme and sounds more like a boring-ass office suite
>>
>>53969757
Isn't optical media still cheaper?
>>
>>53970237
>Its funny that they only sell well once they get cracked
Is there a measurable impact at all
Are there statistics?
>>
>>53968843
This.

>waiting a few months while paying more just to watch it on an inferior tiny screen in an inferior aspect ratio and shittier sound.
>watching a movie multiple times
I don't get the DVD/Blu-ray ownership meme.
>>
>>53982554
Hard to say because so far everything has been cracked pretty much on day one.

But UltraHD Blu-ray might take longer. They got better at crypto and the crackers got less numerous.

Fucking retards, you're getting 720x480 at most and watching that on a 1080p screen must be horrid.

Not just that, but I don't have to track anyone down to get my discs back like I do with USB drives.

I burn it on a disc and tell them to keep it, end of story.
>>
>>53979854
For remuxes... not too familiar, buy look for 7.1 DTS-MA, or just 7.1, since remuxes aee untouched, MKV compliant playbacks of m2ts files.
