Why don't they replace this with an extra 2.5in slot for more storage? Does anyone still use CDs anymore? They're pretty much obsolete.
>>
Apple replaced it with more battery.
So this means that everyone else will copy them.
>>
>>53965163
I actually saw a guy complaining on Facebook that Windows 10 no longer supports two kinds of disk DRM and he can't play his old games anymore. I thought the same thing,,, I hadn't used my DVD drive in like four years, so I took it out of my system and sold it. I think that dude probably just wanted a reason to hate on Windows 10, though.

But yeah, fuck CDs and DVDs. Who needs that shit when you can get a 16GB flash drive for like $10 or less?
>>
ASUS ultrabooks don't have CD slots. Waste of space indeed, rather but more storage or something.

Also what about batteries? Are there companies that make laptops without batteries? I think 99% of the time I am close to power supply, and laptop batteries are shit anyways

HP and Dell offer them as build options.

There are also tonnes of after market options.

You can replace it for yourself. Costs $5 at max.
>>
>>53965183
No they didn't.

They reduced the thickness of the laptop to the point where an optical drive wouldn't fit.
You didn't get more battery, you got a reduced overall volume of which a higher percentage was battery.

I'm planning to do this on my T420 since a 160GB SSD is too tiny for my music collection.

Beware about slight incompatibilities with some adapters chipsets (I thought slim sata was fully electrically compatible with sata with just the physical ports different but thats not the case) and your motherboard. The adapter I bought for my T520 had a 3 position switch, one was for hp, one for lenovo and dunno about the other. It will still work in any position but mine sometimes gave problems after resuming from sleep with the incorrect setting.
>>
>here anon, watch this and give it back once you are done
And then I purchased an external optical drive.
>>
>>53965567
Not gonna lie, I was going to buy a chink adapter for 5 bucks, but I'll keep that in mind.
>>
>>53965567
The adapter I got has no switches whatsoever. It works without any problems tho.
>>
>>53965183
Not really, and IBM did it first anyways.
>>
>>53965588
>>53965567
Im trying to remember if there was actually a chip inside the adapter when I opened it, im not sure but now I think it didnt. Also im not sure either if it was about mobo incompatibility, the following link http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/second-hdd-caddy-with-a-flip-switch.739486/ says its beacause of other thing. Anyway if you can try to make sure it includes the switch, mine did have issues. Btw it is a seagate.

I use the blu-ray drive in my laptop. Netflix DVD mail service is still the cheapest way to watch new releases. I rip the disks to HDD so I can watch when it's convenient for me instead of holding on to a disk for a week or two.

Getting kind of tired of this mentality that disk drives are useless.
If you don't need it, fine. Why push that standard on everyone else, though?

Because the thing is actually in reverse. 90% of all people don't need it. If you do need it, get an external one, but don't force your shitty disc drives on me.

Why? Unless your laptop came with a bluray drive which are rare as fuck it makes no sense to waste money on an external writer plus discs instead of getting an external drive.

>>53965163
´There actually is a slot for that. I saw it and I'm thinking of buying that. I don't use CDs, I've got an external drive if need be, so I think I'll just hook up a 2.5in drive

So you can't figure out how to make a relatively cheap very large media work and therefor it's a waste? Sounds like you might be more wasteful the a bluray setup.
>>
>>53966178
You know, you can get a fucking frame for using a DVD drive/BluRay/Anything drive with a fucking SATA power/connection port, right? That's how you clone drives, son.
>>
What's wrong with CDs? I still buy metal CDs and their very collectable. Some people want the real thing they can hold in their hands and not some digital download. Vinyl takes up too much room
>>
>>53965163
It is there for compatibility issues. Not every single component has built-in drivers in Windows 10 or older versions of Windows. In example, I have a mobo from 2013 and it's network controller requires manual driver installation from mobo CD or to download it from the manufacturer web-site. If you don't have another PC to download the driver and you have no optical drive then you are pretty much fucked up. Plus not every consumer can get usb installation media for his operating system straight away, much likely he will buy installation DVD - so how is he supposed to install the operating system?
>I don't need it so nobody need it
If you don't like it - don't buy it, that's how simple it is. There are lots of so-called ultrabooks out there which have no optical-drives and have pre-installed operating system.
>>
>>53967183
Do you actually use those CDs?

I stopped buying retail discs because they're just inconvenient.

>sometimes gave problems after resuming from sleep
Do you mean the drive fucking off until you sleep and resume again (or reboot), then reappearing? Do you run Windows? If so, Windows believes the drive is at least somewhat removable and ejects it on sleep. It does this with removable drives because things like flash drives and external HDDs are highly likely to be yanked during sleep.

A fix I've been using:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <Windows.h>

int main(int argc, char **argv) {
TCHAR fname[MAX_PATH];

GetModuleFileName(NULL, fname, MAX_PATH);
printf("Preventing eject of drive %c. Press enter to allow eject...\n", fname[0]);
getchar();
return 0;
}

Compile that C program to an exe (with console/non-GUI compile options) and place it in the root dir of the drive. Run that exe and minimize the command prompt window it opens in. Windows will try to eject the drive on sleep, but fail because there's something running from it, so it'll still be there on wake. The program itself doesn't do anything interesting; it just gets the path to itself to display the drive letter it's running from, and waits for you to hit enter or kill it by closing its command prompt window.

Any exe anywhere on the drive will work too, provided it stays running and you can exit it if you want to eject the drive. I just wanted something dedicated rather than "this particular instance of Calculator" or similar.

I wanted something I can quit easily because I removed the screw bracket from the back of my HDD caddy and the original CD drive, and installed a short tab of clear tape for pulling the drive out with. Initially I wanted it to be a permanent installation, but Windows kept insisting it was a removable device, so I figured I may as well convert it to a hotswap bay. The freeware program RemoveDrive is also useful for creating a "Remove drive D" shortcut if it doesn't always appear in the safe remove menu.
