Why is everyone hyped about the raspberry pi?

It's not even made in China and it's not even cheap and you can't even do anything cool with it.

Why didn't the Teensy or Arduino blow up so big?
>>

i dont get why adding turkman hat is funny when we could just use the poop emoji

You can do what the fuck you want with it, what are you talking about, in theory you can even do PCIe x1 slot for it
>>
>>53962191
It still blows because it doesn't use x86.
>>

It's not but it's the most useful. All the useful software (proprietary and open sores) out there requires an x86 OS which requires an x86 CPU.

Arduino did get big. It's community is probably still bigger and more active than the RPi's. The difference is that it's community is still mostly hobbyists and tinkerers. RPi has attracted a bit more mainstream consumer attention.

BeagleBoard/Bone also has a pretty large community around it.

Speaking of Arduino and RPi, if you wanted to control several arduino devices with a central unit, RPi is good for that.

It really could be. Fuck it, give me a dual core 1GHz atom soc, i'd still take that over a quad-core shitty ARM soc. I'm sure intel could give those chips away for like 5-10$ a piece. A shitty x86 cpu is always better than any ARM cpu because of software compatibility alone.

Depends on what it runs, probably you gonna run into internet related problems more than anything imo (of course you are not gonna be able to host intensive stuff with a lot of traffic)
>>
Raspberry pi are cheap enough at being disposable.
I've broken 2 Pi.
1 dead for wrong polarity wiring, the other one blown ethernet port due to lightning strike.

The reason it's popular is because it's easy to program. Instead of low level register programming, you can use python or even bash.

# Set pin 11 to gpio mode
echo 11 > /sys/class/gpio/export

#Configure the Pin Direction (In/Out):
echo out > /sys/class/gpio/gpio11/direction

#Write a value to turn on the LED using the GPIO11:
echo 1 > /sys/class/gpio/gpio11/value

#Now your led should be ON!!!

#Write a value to clear the LED using the GPIO11
echo 0 > /sys/class/gpio/gpio11/value

#Now your led should be OFF!!!

#Delete the created GPIO (11)
echo 11 > /sys/class/gpio/unexport

Note that this won't work on bash on windows due to lack of emulation.
>>
>>53965149
How is any of this shit easier than Arduino's digitalWrite() ???
>>
>>53965998
digitalWrite() are good if you have preset condition.

In case of pi, you can use it dynamically by typing at console prompt.

You can also use it as a cgi script.

Or, you can use some shell pipe, like grep something or netcat something and if condition match then turn on GPIO.
>>
>>53966111
It's not tremendously hard to use an Arduino/clone as GPIO extension to an existing PC. You could go as simple as typing mnemonics into PuTTY or automate this however you like.
>>
>>53962150
I'm into robotics and I personally use it as a very cheap small coprocessor for a vision processing setup. It has GPIO, a camera module which can do 90FPS and it can also run Python/OpenCV easily. For $35.

what is it tho
I searched "fez logo" but I only get
the game
>>
>>53966282
Yes, but you'll need PC and there's no guaranteed if you make mistake, arduino won't backfeed the current and burn your pc usb port.

My point is pi are cheap enough as a standalone programmable electronic.
You might make mistake, but at most you only lost your pi.

The price are comparable to arduino but pi give you more options.

eg: with cgi-bin you can type:
http://ip.of.the.pi/cgi-bin/turn-on-led.sh

or you can ssh, then run ./turn-on-led.sh

or schedule it it in cron, etc.

For practical example, my ISP supplied modem sometime crash and won't respond to anything.
So, i can use pi to ping the modem ip, count missing packet replies and if exceed the limit, power cycle the modem using relay triggered by gpio.
#!/bin/bash

# Make sure router is ON
echo 1 > /sys/class/gpio/gpio11/value
sleep 95

while true; do
mytest=$(ping -c3 10.0.0.1 | grep "0 received")
if [ "x${mytest}" != "x" ]; then
echo 0 > /sys/class/gpio/gpio11/value
sleep 1
echo 1 > /sys/class/gpio/gpio11/value
sleep 90
fi
sleep 5
done
