How old are your rigs, how much can they take.
Currently using my old machine(5 years) and I am thinking on how long can it actually last anymore?
>>
Been using mine since 2008, so 8 years.

As long as you back up your stuff on your hard drive, you can go ahead and run that thing into the ground.

>tfw hypocrite for not backing up
>>
>>53955025
I am not worried about the data, more about the hardware, the cpu, graphics and other components in it
>>
12 years, but since I bought a laptop in 2009 I didn't use it. I might format windows xp and install lxle, or just upgrade the hardware

CPU is 4 y/o, mobo is 3 y/o, GPU is 4 y/o, PSU is 6 y/o, CPU heatsink is 6 or 7 y/o, oldest hard drive is almost 10 y/o.
I'm planning for big upgrade when the Zen will come out, depending on it's actual performance and pricing it might be Intel tho.

What do you mean by "how long can it actually last"?

This thing's 20 years old, got way older shit in storage. Computers last a long time if properly taken care of, and even if they're not.

Usability wise? Depends on what you do with it, my daily drivers vary from 15 to 5 years old. If it weren't for the internet you could use shit even further back.
>>
Still rocking my build from 2012; 4 years old and running just fine 2500k and GTX 670. Upgraded RAM to 16GB for all the VMs and shit I run.

My computer is 6 years old but I see no reason to build a new one at this time as the i7 can handle most anything I run. I upgraded the video card to a GTX 960. Thought about SSD but will wait as my mobo has 3 MB/s SATA, the 6 MB/s were just coming out back then. Maybe if my system drive dies.

I'm using my 4-5 years old i3 2120 build.

I'm going to keep using it until it melts.

I've got a 2008 iMac. After upgrading it with a 240GB SSD and 6GB RAM I've never had any issues with it, probably going to upgrade to a new computer soon just because I've had this long enough
>>
>>53957475
Is this your main PC? I had one about the same age running when my main PC was being repaired and I could hardly do anything on it, it was so slow
>>
>>53957306
>I meant SATA II 3 GB/s not MB.

Gbps. For SATA it's bits, not bytes. Theoretical max in MB would be 300 MB, roughly 1/3rd of a GB.

>My first computer was the Atari 400 with membrane keyboard and cassette tape drive. Centipede and Frogger for days, good times.

Ahhh...cassette drives. I was pretty young, but I remember one of those on muh C64. Pac Man, Centipede, Radar Rat Race, Dig Dug...those were cartridges though. Only thing I ever did with the Datasette is load/store short BASIC programs.

Just retired a rig I made in 08, core 2 duo, 4 gigs of ram, some shitty gfx card to replace the first one that burned itself out. Thing had blown caps and everything and just kept working. Protip, don't skimp on fans.

I'd say 30 years is pushing it, I can't find any working MFM hard drives for an IBM PC-XT and I think the CGA monitor is going out too (loses vertical hold).

If you replace the storage with solid state, clean and lubricate the fans and disk drive motors, and change leaking caps and clock batteries before the corrosion eats the traces right off your board, you might be able to make it 50 years.

where do you live? is it wet/humid there or dry?
I have two XTs, two clones, a Mac Plus, a couple PS/2s and a lot of other pretty early systems and their drives work just fine, but I've always wondered if it was because I live in a desert where there isn't as much moisture or otherwise inclement environmental conditions to fuck with electronics

My PC is from 06. Upgraded the cpu in 2007 to a 2Ghz core2duo. Will get a new skylake (either an i7-6700K or the vanilla version... probably vanilla) build next week. Zen is too far away baka.

My rig is 9 years old.Still runs very good.

Parts that have been upgraded are-
Replaced 512 mb ram with 2 gb.
Replaced psu with 450W psu 1 year back.
Replaced 80 gb hdd with 1tb hdd.

As for the future upgrades-
I plan to get Core 2 Duo E4700 (as it is the best cpu supported),a 64/128/256 gb ssd(can reuse it on future system also),a new uatx/atx case(with usb3 ports, can reuse in future),maybe a new air cooler for overclocking, and a gpu.
Rest of the components(monitor) are good enough for me ,ram is max supported already.

The only thing i can't figure out is what gpu to get, even after researching a lot.
Till now i have decided to get nvidia (less power draw than amd) that can be powered solely by pcie (only 450w cheap psu) and has vram ~1gb(mobo has pcie 2.0 x16 @ x4 mode ). After this i get confused as to what model to get.
Do i get a 600/700/900 series one so that i can reuse it in future ,probably 5/10 years later?(can't probably afford it)
Or do i get a used 100/200/400 series one ?
My target is ~60 fps nfs mw 2005 at medium/high settings on 1280x1024.Currently i get 10-20 fps at 640x480.

Any advice would be appreciated.

>>

p3 still running strong.
Dos based craptastic 486 machine.
pentium 4 I burned up another processor on last week. I literally have a drawer full of p4s.
I have a server that's been running 24/7 for 12 years.
Current rig is 3 months old still working out the little shit.
Entertainment rig in the living room is 3 years old
Storage bank pc is 7 years old.
Still use a 100 base 24 port ethernet switch for the non heavy use pcs.
I've also got an old toshiba laptop circe 1992ish.
>>
>>53965605
What do you use the P3 for?

I wonder if I could get away with using mine on a daily basis.

I've had my Acer laptop since the beginning of 2010. Besides needing a CPU replacement (First gen i5 quadcore), never had a problem with it; still plays recent games fairly well on minimum settings too.

Dell XPS l502x, shipped 2011 September.
It's bretty gud.

I wouldn't. It's so fucking slow compared to even my p4 machine. I would put windows 2000 on it and call it good. I'm using xp on mine and it's crap. It's even got the maximum supported 1gb of sdram. That shit is hard to source now.

I think mine around 8 years old.

My rig still feels responsive enough, especially since I take extra care to avoid bloating my OS. And gaming was okay until the new console generation. Now I've been thinking of getting a 6700k just cause they seem solid and I like round numbers.

I used a Pentium 4 1300 with 2K in 2014-2015 pretty much daily, choked a little on the occasional over-animated site but otherwise was quite alright

Considering an early NetBurst chip is about equivalent to or bested by a ~900MHz+ PIII for most general use in everything but SIMD, you could probably get away with it, though it will probably be a little painful unless you're running fast RDRAM.
>>
Got an E-Machines T-3120 that is coming on 10 years old. I fucked up the HD about 8 years ago (don't ask) and so replaced it with a Seagate and it runs just fine. I use it primarily for older games and as a storage dump.
