Welcome to /fg/lt/, or as I've recently taken to calling it, /fg+lt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Gnome 3.2 was just added to Arch repos:
https://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sort=&arch=x86_64&repo=Extra&q=gnome&maintainer=&flagged=
>>
>>53951593
Took them long enough! 3.2 was released five years ago!
>>
>>53951479
Personally, I like pacaur, as it has pretty much the same syntax as pacman, allows you to modify PKGBUILDs beforehand, and requires minimal interaction after executing the command. It's also always updated really fast whenever something changes with the AUR.

Yaourt feels too bloated.
>>
>>53951662
Also is the least secured ( Yaourt ) that gotta be important, don't to end up like Mint did.
>>
I'm inclined to try KDE again since they had improvements over time that I haven't check: last time it was a buggy crap that was not worth the beauty of it.

Even Gnome 3 manages to keep stability.

Should I give kde 5.6 a try or just stick with MATE.

It depends. What matters with stability is the packages.

You can't just make a decision based on the distro alone if both are barebones after a clean install (which is the case with Arch and Gentoo).

Dude what? Its been out for like a week or so. Or is that five years in the fast paced Arch lingo?

3.20 was recently released. Not 3.2 which was indeed released in 2011. I was poking fun at what I thought was merely a typo. No big deal if you've misunderstood their versioning system, though.

However, you're leaving all of your passwords in the hands of a private corporation.

use Keepass instead.

What most bothers me about it is the massive titlebars. I've got a small monitor ( not even 1080p ), so every bit of space matters.

The problem with Github is censorship. There are many social justice warriors at this place and github may delete repos that contain several buzzwords.

They recently added also a blocking feature.

Github is cancer and people should get rid of it before it goes full facebook.

https://about.gitlab.com/ is a good alternative.
>>
>>53952527
Really nice, thanks!

A few links seem dead, though.

Seems like that's mostly link to linux versions of games, which isn't exactly what I had in mind.

>>53952530
Try it out and see what happens!
Check out the arch wiki. It has instructions on doing that: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GNU_Parted#BIOS.2FMBR_examples (replace ext3 with ext4, of course)

>>53952570
neetcode uses gogs, which is open source. It also offers freedom from censorship (according to them), and regularly posts invoices and has a warrant canary. I trust it enough to use it, even though self-hosting might be the best idea.
Meanwhile, github has a long history of censorship and deleting repos it doesn't like.

A webpage on a service the maintainer updates at a fixed rate. It may say, for example, "I can confirm I have not received any request from the NSA to give them my data. This message is valid until May 1st, 2016".

Government agencies can force you not to reveal information about their requests, but they cannot force you to lie and say you did not receive any request. If, for example, the message isn't updated after the expiration interval, you can certainly know the service is compromised.
>>
>>53952729

A distribution won't teach you how kernels work. Reading a book about kernels will teach you that.

Is there such a thing as telling my mother board which gpu to use for its main?

Delayed allocation and potential data loss
Because delayed allocation changes the behavior that programmers have been relying on with ext3, the feature poses some additional risk of data loss in cases where the system crashes or loses power before all of the data has been written to disk.

Im struggling to find information with facts about this delay. How long does it take before the data is truly written to the disk? Are we talking about ns/ms/s/m? Does popular file managers like dolphin display the accurate file transfer progress or the temporary: source -> ram

Hey guys can you help me with one big thing? If I understand how to do this I'll be able to do everything related to this on my own:

How can I install this package managed or Arch?

>>
>>53954844

Read the Wiki entry for what PKBUILDs are and what your so beloved AUR is. If you don't know how to run one simple command yourself to build and install something from the AUR, then you shouldn't be using those shitty helpers or the AUR at all.

There is a simple command on the Wiki. If I was able to find it, so you should be too.

>>53954919

Why do you need one of those helpers? Do you really need things from the AUR or did you just fall for the "AUR is amazing" meme?
Look up PKBUILDs and the makepkg command. It's all explained on those Wiki pages. You can download the PKBUILDs from the AUR without any of those helpers. There are two things you can do: either spend 10 minutes reading out about it and figuring it how to do it properly, or just use shitty, abstractions and blindly type in stuff while constantly running into errors and issues.
>>
>>53955029
Fuck gnome tho man, I also fell for the meme - it's just a tablet OS.

I'm using MATE now .. not only that it's more comfy ( this is subjective ), but it's very smooth, clean experience amazingly low on resource and good performance with everything compared to Gnome.

Where's the cheapest place to buy Linux-related stickers? A quick Google search just brought up stickers for around $3/piece, which adds up if one wants to stickerify many a device. :/
>>
>>53951593
Anyone using nvidia proprietary drivers might want to consider waiting to upgrade as the new version of gdm doesn't play nice with them and you end up getting crashes every 5-10 minutes.

You can work around it by swapping out your display manager, but that's obviously not ideal and I'd imagine they will have it fixed soon(tm) so you might as well just wait.
>>
>>53955052
Idk, I kinda like it. A few things do bug me, like the retarded search in Nautilus, but overall I like shiny things.
>>53955074
It's antergos' fault tho, they didn't update lightdm. Pacman complained, but I tried to be smarter. I fucking knew I shouldn't have upgraded so quickly.
And yeah, fucking Adawaita is the only theme working right, fuck it all to hell.
>>
>>53955074
>>53955156
Arc and Flatplat both work. Even if they aren't your preferred theme, pretty much anything is better than Adwaita.

>>53955217
>>53955187

LightDM is "lighter" than GDM.

>flashy
It is not. LigthDM is the display manager backend. It can't be flashy, because you don't even see it. What you see are the greeters (frontends) and those can be as flashy as you want and they come in different versions. GTK, Qt, WebKit or whatever else is there.

>>
>>53955369
That's probably just version incompatibility
If you didn't install it manually then do it
The configure process will detect and install the proper version.
>>
>>53955369

You have to rebuild/install your Arc theme. Since you installed it for 3.18, it copied the 3.18 version for you. Now that you're running 3.20, it won't work. Reinstalling will install the 3.20 version.

I went with LXDE in the Ubuntu VM I set up today. Wanted something really lightweight but without any need for tinkering, so I did a netinstall and chose minimal Lubuntu desktop. Didn't even come with a web browser, so was perfect for my needs.

I wouldn't want to use LXDE primarily, though, but with my currently preferred environment being a moderately customised Gnome setup, I'm not sure you should take my preferences into account.
