Yeah, they are pretty much. It adds this weird chunk/fuzz to it. Only seems to work with small neodymium magnets. It sounds AWESOME on higher notes, especially if you're going for a creamy, bright sound.

I have a Fender Frontman amp. It's got decent distortion and has a built-in reverb but it's... awful. I always use pedals for reverb (which I don't have at the moment).
I lost my recording stuff so I need to get something else to do that. I also have a custom bass (added in active pickups, an extra set of pickups, a bunch more tone nobs). The amp for that thing rocks, but the overdrive on it isn't the best.

nice amp, yeah, i always use pedals for reverb or latency or more detailed effects, amps handle distortion well though, although to be honest, i havnt used any of my pedals in ages due to amp sim's, there's just so much more you can do with a good amp sim setup, i mean, in under a few seconds i can switc from sounding like jimmy page to ozzy osbourne or to mark knopfler or to hendrix and etc... it really is p cool.
ahh im not into bass myself, ive got a really good acoustic, 6 years and she still sounds amazing, but the bridge needs like fixing, idk, its literally warping up the wood around it now (i use heavy gauge strings on my acoustic for nice beefy shit), so im kinda scared it might just rip out one day, but i might get a soft-top acoustic soon.
also for recording stuff, you could just get a cheap usb sound interface with 1/4 in and linein then get a good linein mic and you should be set to record most stuff.

i just tried, roll tone back to 0 (if your looking for what pickup to use, on a dual humbucker setup, switch to bridge, but on my strat 5 way selector, i go 4th from your face which seems to be good), put high's on 7.5, scoop the mids, put low's on 7.5, throw the distortion to max and put the main volume at around 5, play really close to the bridge pickup and pluck hard, after some practice you should be able to build some speed and it sounds close enough via amp desu
