>After years under a previous regime, several prominent Internet piracy groups have adopted a new set of TV-release standards. The rules will go into effect this weekend, but several groups have already made the switch, frustrating many bewildered pirates who must now play .MKV instead of .MP4 files.

>The new rules are announced in lengthy documents, one for HD and one for SD TV-releases.

>“Since the last revision of this document in 2012, TV-X264-SD has grown and become a major section that many people contribute to and depend on. This new revision aims to update the standards from 2012 to standards suitable for 2016 and the future,” the intro to the SD version reads.

why would this ever be an issue

I assume people who just plop in a USB stick into TVs that support mp4 containers but not mkv.
>>
>>53947192
couldn't they just convert it first?
>>
>>53947349
sure, but normies don't know how to do that easily.
>>
>>53947364
if they're pirating shit then they should know enough about converting.
>>
Are you saying copyright/antipirating laws fucked the consumer once again? Rendering most of their players useless.

Inb4 they shouldn't copy their own files
>>

You would think that.

x264 is still pretty much the best encoder around. x265 had just barely caught up to it in terms of quality, but x265 (and HEVC decoding) has a huge performance hit associated with it.

But honestly they could have used 10-bit for their standard

yep, quite a lot of people apparently go for the smallest, shittiest files they can, like 350M-ish 45-minute episodes

i know someone who does this, and she plays them on a curved 4K oled tv set to 1080p at the wrong refresh rate
>>
>>53947040
If this was some kind of obscure format that needed a special bleeding-edge media player to work, I would sort of agree. However the matroska container has been fucking standard in anime for fucking six to eight years and is a common format to see around pirate sites in general.

The fact that many don't know how to use ffmpeg or handbreak today is pathetic. Converting music and video should be standard knowledge for pirating, but I bet many illiterates download shitty half-assed shareware converters from Softonic or in worst case scenario actually buys them.

It was 10 years ago when anime switched to it and it was the right decision then.

>>
>>53950851
It's mostly curries who download tiny, low-quality SD files, very often AVI reencodes. I myself grab scene SD for my parents since they can hardly see a difference in quality and I'd rather save myself the disk space, so they have their use. MKV is totally fine though since every computer with a decent media player can play them. The problem is with curries that play these files from their ancient DVD players.
>>
>>53950991
i'm ok with SD where space is a concern and screens are small
but why can't they at least be DVD quality? no-one even does DVD resolution SD encodes (720x480/576)
>>
>>53950590
Unless it looks like an obscure brazilian snuff tape from 1969, I don't give a flying egg about what quality I watch stuff in. I'm in it for the plot and interesting ideas, not fancy 4K digital effects
>>
>>53953371
Personally, I am happy that 720p mkv is minimum today. I wish it was 1080p already.

I never understand people that were able to watch camrecords with shitty sound or some 480p in 2016, but just my preference.
>>
why people don't understand is that people like us with data caps on our phones don't want to download a 10GB mkv to watch . My data cap is 2GB a month, I'd prefer to be able to download a 100MB version of the episode instead.
>>
>>53953676
Get boost mobile then you massive cuck. I only pay $55 a month and download over 70GB of data each month.
>>
>>53953791
yeah but the speeds are slow I bet and my phone is cdma
>>
>>53953676
That has nothing to do with File containers you YIFY loving faggot.
>>
>>53953836
mkv is higher res and uses more data.

Nope, speeds are fine.

pic related 51.2MB speed test done after already having used 35GB of data the first week of the month alone. Boost is also cdma as well.
>>
>>53947040
The people who complain about the switch are the reason piracy is being hunted down.
MKV is a very capable container.
It's your own problem if your Apple TV doesn't support it.
>>
>>53953903
>sprint

I'm on Verizon. I have way faster speeds but I don't want to use up my data to test
>>
>>53953921
>I'm on Verizon. I have way faster speeds but I don't want to use up my data to test
That's why I'm telling you to switch to boost family member. You can do all the speed tests you want, download 1GB as a speed test - boost mobile doesn't give a flying fuck. Yeah sprint is a little slower but you can download all the chinese cartoons your microsd can handle. Think about it.
>>
Why enforce the MKV container when everything is encoded in AVC/H.264 & AAC/MP3 anyway?
Muh subtitles? Most hardware supports SRT these days.

I don't see why you need mkv for tv shows when they never include subs or chapters. What does mkv add exactly?

Then just buy a boost phone senpai. They're not very expensive, the lg volt (which I own) is like $60. I'm sure they'll even give you the same phone number you had with verizon if you talk with them.

Stop getting cucked to death anon, drop verizon.

Here's another speed test for the hell of it.

>Interestingly, there were also massive complaints in 2012 when the SD standards changed from .AVI to MP4.
>Many video players support the MKV format and a lot of downloaders were already familiar with it, since HD shows have been released this way for years.
funny how we move back in time.
MKV used to be dreaded in the Win XP days because it could include any possible codec and you had to fuck around a lot to cover most of those.
people loved .avi because xvid/divx just werks just like .mp4 does these days.

>HEVC is protected bypatentsowned by various parties. Commercial use of HEVC technologies requires the payment of royalties to licensors of HEVC patents, such asMPEG LA,HEVC Advance, andTechnicolor SA. The licensing fees are many times higher than the fees for AVC. The licensing situation is one of the reasons that alternatives such asThor,VP10andDaalaare under development.

What is the point of requiring RAR if they're not using compression or recovery features? And why require a closed source program?
