It's CDE and compton.
CDE works well, It hasn't crashed on me, but I do get issues with it not starting some Xsessions. I recommend customizing it the way you want and then saving your config as a "home session."
There is also an annoying Firefox maximize bug in firefox, it's not CDE's problem so they won't fix it. But when you maximize firefox (or a lot of GTK programs) the program will maximize 4x's the size of your screen resolution.

Well, my hardware is just slightly dated. I use a haswell processor and a 280x. I guess I would have issues with the GPU.
I could downgrade to Yosemite but I seem to recall people saying that it was even worse than El Capitan. To be fair I'm fine here, I just honestly do not like things like the global font it uses.
