Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

is it normal that i can push down the left-hand side of my T420 where the HD access door is?

It's getting quite annoying now that I'm using it as a portable machine, I don't recall it being an issue in bed.

I did replace the HD so is it just that I've not screwed the door on properly or something? it's quite a large depression (the side of the machine goes over the door.)

Try reseating the display cable. Might be that simple. If that doesn't work, replace the cable. Make sure you get the right one for your screen resolution.

They're different for the x768 and x900 displays. I'm not sure if the x900 is downward compatible or not (I think the pins are different), hopefully somebody else knows. The idea being - if it's downward compatible, it'd save you the trouble of buying another one if you're ever planning a x900 screen swap.

CPU fan doesn't start for some reason so it refuses to boot, i presume? Pretty common with laptops.

Check if it's stuck for some reason, or if the cable is loose. Can you enter BIOS?

Take the keyboard out and give it a good clean. Still no spin then replace the fan. Should be about 25 dollars. Replace them too often at work.

The amount of people who use hard drives in this thread as their main OS disk is astounding.

It literally blows my mind.
>>
>>53945572
Nothing wrong with a hard drive as the main drive, anon. I did it for > 6 years. SSD is fast but its definitely not a necessity.
>>
>>53945602
Maybe it's because I've seen so many laptop hard drives fail over the years, not mine mind you(I did have one fail a long time ago in literally my first laptop) they just seem so delicate and easy to break or corrupt unless you have them horizontal in a desk top that never moves.

I can't stand even moving a laptop that has a hard drive as the OS disk while it's on, I can never tell when the fucking thing has its arms out, waiting to read data while being moved and fuck up the entire file system or litter the platter with fucked up sectors.

It's not just about speed, but reliability in portability. Yeah the speed helps too, I installed a shitty sata 2 ssd but thanks to the IOPS, it made an old shitty cpu (a4 3300m) perform much much better, with noticable improvements in the entire interface, not just boot times.

Hard drives are cancer and solid state is the cure. It's been 20 years, it's time to let go. Fuck you Seagate and Western Digital and fucking hitachi for hanging on this long and fuck most SSD manufacturers for letting the price stay this high.

it wont be this year, or even the year after that, but eventually, hard drives will finally become a thing of the past and I can't fucking wait.

I want to get another thinkpad to use as a machine to play with installing/testing stuff (I already own an X220 IPS which I use as work laptop plus another monster of a desktop for more demanding tasks) and I don't know if I should get another just like it (for ~$180, also IPS) or a T420s/T430s for increased resolution (about $290 where I live).
I also stumbled upon a mint condition X301 with a price of about $290; this looks pretty expensive (for a laptop with a CPU 4 times slower than the X220) but on the other hand I have the opportunity to pick up one of the better built thinkpads, as everyone is praising the quality of the materials. I just don't know if it's worth using it in 2016 (the majority of the documented use cases I can find online are posts from 6-7 years ago).
What would /g/ do?

Same as the T420 - most things are replaceable. Follow the hardware maintenance manual and you're set

>>53951232
There is a way of putting a 9.5mm in there. It is stupid as you say but it works. Apparently there's some small physical obstructions and if you chop or grind them off, it will fit. No guarantees and if something shits itself, you're on your own
Oh and also, vibration and shock concerns with a hard drive in particular because you'll be running without the rubber rails
As for storage capacity, that's up to you. But if you want more, you could stick a big SSD in the mSATA too I guess

Yes, although performance would depend on what you'll use it for. I'd just reccomend getting a model with at least a Sandybridge cpu, and putting in your own SSD. For build quality just make sure you stick with X, T, and W/P series thinkpads.

The only reason to keep around a T42 is if you need to do a massive amount of serial shit that won't work over USB to serial adapters.

Anyone know what i should expect in this thing? Also he didn't post a photo of the screen turned on, but says it's working with a genuine copy of Windows 7. If it doesn't turn on, I'd be covered by eBay's guarantee right?

Lenovo thinkpad x61 (looks really cute and comfy and is cheap but is old so i don't know if i'll be able to run win 10 (that's what i'm gonna use, i'm horrible) on it. pic related.

If all the keyboard keys work, you probably just have an X230 with the screen from an X220 on it. Really, the keyboard on the *30 uses the exact same key switches just under different shaped keys, and most of the people complaining either haven't ever used one or are complaining about the layout.

Also there are 3 different manufacturers of Thinkpad keyboards with different scissor switches so keyboard feel can be different even between 2 of the same model.
