The hardware is fine. It is the one thing that Microsoft honestly does well. In the 80's, they had great success with MSX and other hardware standards initiatives.

Luckily the forced update from win10 (which is the only compatable OS if you want to use the touchpad / hardware buttons) are easily disabled if you know what you're doing.
Sadly, the spyware shit is much harder to disable if you even can get all of it.

The worst thing about the surface is being stuck to W10. This is what I figured out to block the W10 spyware.
1. Start with Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB (N ver. optional). It's the only one without the auto update rootkit.
2. Go through these scripts and disable the spyware:
