Welcome to /fg/lt/, or as I've recently taken to calling it, /fg+lt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

IRC connection details:
Server: chat.freenode.net:6667 (no SSL, 6697 for SSL)
Channel: #flt
If you don't have an IRC client (which you should), go to https://webchat.freenode.net/ to join the webchat.
Do not tick "auth to services" (as you probably don't have a freenode account), choose a nickname, and type "#flt" as the channel.
Google captcha, click "connect", all that.

Pardon, but I'd just like to interject for a short while. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU + Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully working GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by GNU.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I actually installed gentoo in a vm.
And I was suprised that compiling all the stuff didnt take as long as I expected it to take.
Needing 20-40 minutes inside a vm to compile a kernel is decent imo.
The thing is just that my knowledge is too limited to make proper use of the useflags.

On some distributions that doesn't do anything, as long as you don't have sudo and allowed members of "wheel" to do everything.

Yes, but you have to install and start the ssh daemon on that computer first.

- based on Ubuntu 14.04LTS (2 years old base)
- it's a Distro based on a Distro (Ubuntu) that's based on another Distro (Debian)
- it has questionable security policies, like not installing kernel updates by default
- the developers don't give a shit about libre software or the ethics of shipping nonfree stuff by default
- the developers don't take existing projects like KDE for their main DE, noooo they have to make their own stuff

all in all it seems like they are making MS Linux the distro, and I find that a huge turnoff. In my opinion:
Debian > Ubuntu > Mint

Hey there! Got a question for the Linux crowd.
So I got this netbook (a Fujitsu m2010) for free, and so far i've been enjoying it for some light web browsing, reading pdf's and playing ascii roguelikes. Now I'm running windows 10 on it as of now, but I tried a fair share of linux distros, before finaly setting on windows, the reason being major issues with the wifi/airlplane-mode physical switch. Now I tried all the given solutions to that issue but could not get it to work, I ended up even switching the wireless chips to no avail, ethernet connections worked just fine, but given this is a small laptop I feel like having wifi is a must. I was getting IRQ9 error messages on the boot menu, and the only thing that would fix those was setting the grub file to include the "acpi=off" option, now I suspect that being related one and another. I looked up for BIOS updates but i already got the last one it seems. I kinda forgot about such a letdown, but today I tried to setup a TAILS boot usb and got stuck with the same messages.
Should I acept I'm not gonna be able to install any distros on this thing? Does anyone here have an idea of something else I could try? Perhaps flashing the bios of another fujitsu netbook or something wild like that?
>>

>for 5 minutes.

You use the ethernet connection to download the wifi drivers
>>
>>53934278
I am by no means very knowledgeable on that topic but here's my limited opinion:

IRQ9 is commonly used by the ACPI and the option you use seems to disable a kernel module. I don't imagine that the kernel is too different between different linux distros so you might have to use that option for every OS that uses the linux kernel. So you'd need to modify the bootloader as you did with grub.

Also what exactly do you mean by switiching the wireless chips?

One thing I would try is to play around with the BIOS settings, BIOS can be quite buggy.
my current bios will lock me out of the bios menu if i change a certain option.
As a last attempt I'd also try to reset CMOS, consult your manual or google online for how its done.
>>
>>53934524
>to disable a kernel module
Meant it disables the acpi kernel module.
>>
I have an issue with playonlinux.
Whenever I try to play a game, if I launch the game, then I launch other programs (mumble, music player...) I will be able to have the sound of the game, but everything else will be muted. Even the mic will not work.
And if I try to launch my programs, then launch the game with playonlinux, everything will work perfectly but not playonlinux that will be muted.

I'm already had this bug one year ago, but can't remember how did I fixed this. Anyone got an idea ?

>>
>>53933082
>the Free Software movement produced the GNU/Linux system

>>
>>53934524

Thanks for the insight! I've been checking the bios. But it offers little to no settings besides passwords and boot order, so I think I'm sorta stuck on that area. My main concern is not being able to connect to any network via wireless, but I take it that that's unrelated to booting with acpi=off now...

And by the wifi chip I mean I swapped the component inside the laptop for some spare ones I had to try those, because I came across people saying the one installed by default was quite troublesome.

the pf firewall is the truly outdated part that FreeBSD uses

>>53933271
USE flags are a very simple concept, and it's pretty straight forward to setup. The docs have a good explanation of how to use them (global USE flags in /etc/portage/make.conf, per-application USE flags in /etc/portage/package.use). If a USE flag is missing, portage will complain before starting to compile.
On modern hardware, compiling is pretty fast for most things (Chromium, LibreOffice and Firefox are pretty slow, still), and if you have multiple systems you can instruct portage to create binpkgs you can use on other systems, and you can setup distcc to compile using multiple machines.

The modified BSD license prevents that, and it's considered nonfree. While the cuck BSD license is considered free. The modified license contains a non-commercial use clause, essentially making it useless to any corporation to use it. But since a corporation can't use it, debian and fedora both keep software under it out of their repos. Bceause "corporations are people too" even though they're not. The only negative thing I can find about that license is if someone wanted to sell a laptop with the software included but wasn't able to with the license. I think it's a good license.

Hello everyone.

I have been using Mint in my desktop about a year now and i think i wanna try some other "it werks distro" (have also checked out Lubuntu,Xubuntu and Ubuntu back inna day when i was not using them and they are much better nowdays).

I have old acer mini laptop that i planned to put Lubuntu on it (have been using my bootable Puppy SD card in it from time to time) and then my main desktop machine witch have been running Mint i planned to replace it with Xubuntu or Ubuntu mate.

Is Xubuntu or ubuntu mate "better" than mint?

Any tips or suggestions would be appriciated.

Thanks.

I am dual booting with Windows 7, and have the firmware packages for the adapter on a USB, but IDK how to install it on Debian, as the tutorial just says to use "install firmware packages" in Terminal. Why do you insist on calling it GNU/Linux ?
There are distros that do not use GNU like Alpine Linux

All that various Linux distros share is the Linux kernel so it makes sense to call it Linux. Not all of them use GNU

Linus Torvalds:
> calling Linux in general "GNU Linux" I think is just ridiculous

Jim Gettys, originator of XFree86

>There are lots of people on this bus; I don't hear a clamor of support that GNU is more essential than many of the other components; can't take a wheel away, and end up with a functional vehicle, or an engine, or the seats. I recommend you be happy we have a bus.

How do I unidiotify ubuntu?

I wanna give it a fair chance, and actually try it for real, because all in all, it doesnt feel too bad in a live boot, and since KDE is dead (again...), I might as well try something else.

But there is just some stuff, that totally puts me off, and it is not just that amazon-botnet.

Stuff like, when trying their graphical package manger (>muh appstore), because apt-get has the worst syntax ever, it cant find shit, until you realize that really, really small >show system tools at the bottom, that you have to click every single time to actually find anything besides candy crush tier shit, or that utterly retarded idea to have a mac-like menu bar, that you then use to just waste screen space by just displaying the name of the program, instead of the usual menu_view_settings_whatever, that you only get when mousing up, or the fucked up alt+tab implementation.

Is that shit fixable? Is there an easy script, or do I really have to dig into ubuntus settings menus?

Don't do that. You create partitions and then create a filesystem for that partition. You basically run mkfs.ext4 on the whole disk -- that won't work/I assume scramble your data.

Repartition it and run mkfs.ext4 /device/partitionumber -- for example:

/dev/sda1

Check what I said word for word again and follow the instructions.

- Very small overhead
- Free as in freedom
- Can use whatever GUI frontend you prefer, or none if you don't need one
- Can be setup to start/suspend VMs on system boot/shutdown
- Can use LVM storage backend (and a LOT more)
- Can be managed remotely via a GUI or CLI
- Can be managed locally via GUI or CLI
- Not tied to a single GUI
- Can emulate pretty much every cpu you can imagine
>>
>>53941309
Ok I messed up anyway I did fdisk /dev/SDB and it says "device contains a valid 'ext4' signature; it is strongly recommended to wipe the device with wipefs(8) if this is unexpected to avoid possible collisions"
>>
>>53941338
So to recap, wipe the entire disk. Partition it with cfdisk. Make the filesystem with mkfs.ext4 on the partition you want to.

For example /dev/sda1 or /dev/sda2 (based on your layout). Do not run it directly on /dev/sda.

You should really follow the Arch Linux tutorial a bit more closely.

Good. Now follow the Beginner's Guide or you will fail miserably.

The next steps are thusly: bootstrap your arch linux install, by using pacstrap and installing the base and optionally base-devel packages into your /mnt prefix. Generate your fstab and output it into /mnt/etc/fstab

Then change the root environment using arch-chroot, set up the system essentials: hostname, timezone, locale, install grub on your linux disk (not a partition, i.e. /dev/sda for example), set the root passwd.

Exit and reboot, create your regular user, passwd the acc. Then setup your actual system, i.e. drivers, WM/DE, apps.
>>

FOLLOW THE BEGINNERS GUIDE. Seriously.

You can also orient yourself with this: http://www.linuxveda.com/2016/02/08/the-always-up-to-date-guide-to-install-arch-linux/5/ if it's really too much to read for you. But make sure to check around various sources.

Ever since you wrote that I wasted time researching - there are pretty much 0 guides, everyone excepts you to be a sys admin with years of experience... are you sure it's worth all this wasted time just to run Microsoft office?

From my research XEN would be the best followed by KVM, but XEN is hard as fuck to configure.

You can run Office in WINE or just use Libre Office.

I just discovered CrossOver, and there's a working crack for it on Linux.

Just going to use that... it is the most lowed among reviews and it's optimized for running such software.

I'm trying to run a VM with VirtualBox in Manjaro, but I'm getting the error "Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)"
It tells me to type '/sbin/rcvboxdrv setup' into the terminal, but that directory doesn't exist.
I tried searching it and all I found is people on Ubuntu with this problem who were missing a dependency that I already have.

What do

I don't use that trash, but the messages seem to be complaining about not finding nvidia drivers.

Can you start X (try something like
X `which xterm`

It appears you're not set up to be able to use Wayland. The best way to find out what's wrong is to just Google the error messages, lol
