I used my HTC One M7 for 3 years, it's snapdragon 600 isn't really that far off the 616, infact it benchmarks higher (Antutu 40k vs ~37k from 616, vs ~80k on 650). While my HTC One M7 performs well today still, it's significantly slower than my Redmi Note 3 Pro in some cases, in particular opening skype, scrolling/loading webpages in chrome, taking photos, recording video, and many more common shit. My M7 had a GPE 5.1 ROM too, nothing wrong with it's performance just that the faster hardware does fucking make a difference.

yea... tho my father has learned how to watch chinese shows from the internet after a couple of months. Had to put all the chinese websites in the favorites so he can easily go to them without my help. I think he'll eventually learn to use smartphones. He's also kinda jealous everyone has a smartphone these days except him so he does want to upgrade.

Redmi Note 3 Pro with Snapdragon 650. The UI should be pretty easy for him to use if you just set everything up for him (MIUI is pretty similar in aesthetic to iOS). Powerful when you need it to be and energy efficient when you just casually use it. Has really good battery life either way. It's an all aluminum body so it's rigid and the shape makes it feel really nice.
If you think he prefers 5.0" go with the Mi4c.

not bad, although all plastic, has dual flash but no phase detection auto focus. camera quality is on par with the Note 2 but not as good as Mi4c, and the processor is kind of dated. even with a 3000mah battery, big.LITTLE Snapdragons are way more efficient.
currently there's MTK6753 phones that are all around better than the K3 note for like $20 more but that's a well rounded inexpensive phone.

The difference is worth since Redmi 3 Note Pro has a newer chip, more battery, better Micro SD support (up to 128gb compared to 32gb for the K3), way better camera and also it's newer, while still having a good price that doesn't make you sacrifice your savings. For nearly 100$ more (if we take the cheapest K3 model and a medium priced Redmi 3 Note), you get way better everything. Also Redmi 3 Note has a metal case, not a plastic one, and a fingerprint sensor.

Mediatek is ok, but right now the redmi note 3 pro just kind of shits on everything at the pricepoint, even current $600 flagships from well known brands.
A72 cores are like intel while A53 cores are like AMD. It's a massive stepup, even while the 650 is a 600-class snapdragon it's faster than every snapdragon 800 series besides the 820 which also has A72 cores.

Eurofag here so I don't give a shit about the burgers. Since the Redmi has support for the 1800Mhz frequency I get 4G signal without any problem.
