How do I get audio to output to HDMI in Linux Mint? Video works fine, but I want to watch movies on the TV. No option to swap it over in the sound panel.
Install Gentoo

do you have pulse audio installed? if not you should install it anyway its useful. then try and set output to hdmi.
id suggest posting on the mint forum if you want anything more than "install gentoo" for an answer
This problem is fixed in kernel 4.4, update it.
>open alsamixer
>press F6
>select card with hdmi
>unmute and or change volume levels
doesnt work? not listed? enable sound via hdmi in sound devices in linux and recompile

Meanwhile mintfags having to re-configure pulse audio.

Installed it, but the tray icon just had default and "other" as sound sources. Maybe I got the wrong one?

Was that the update it offered me before it shut down? I only installed it three days ago. Cinnamon.
>>53928049
I take it that's in the program manager?

What is Plasma? I almost got Arch, but Mint seemed better for a beginner like me.
Bump. The suggested suggestions didn't work.
Edit /etc/alsa.conf, if it doesn't exist, create the file. In the file type in EnableHDMIAudio=1
Save and reboot the system, and you'll have HDMI audio.

Works on my machine (tm).
Mint too.
Never had any problem, and I've hooked different computers to many TVs.
To be honest I think you are probably just being retarded.

/etc/asount.conf
create that file and change your default card to the output appropriate
#defaults.pcm.card 2
#defaults.pcm.device 0
#defaults.ctl.card 2
For me I have a wireless headset as pcm.card 2, try setting that card to the proper pcm output of your hdmi
But I use my default pcm device '0' as the sound card controller
If you want to change between the devices now you just have to comment or uncomment the lines. Manual fix that worked for me

Hit that big ole mint button in the bottom left corner of your screen
Type in sound
select the HDMI source.
