IT'S HAPPENING

IT'S OVER, INTEL IS FINISHED & BANKRUPT

Sweet, it can do extreme analytics and Big Data.

I think this will really make things agile moving forward.

Why do you give a shit? It's not like any of us are employed and will see this ever used personally
>>
>>53921465
When will it reach the efficiency and performance of Intel though? There's a reason most of the top supercomputers in the world use Xeon.

What does "FPGA support" entail for the power8? I've only ever screwed with verilog for my logic fundamentals class but I do know that fpgas are cool as fuck.

>POWER9, IT'S EXTREME

They should call it the Centurion Processor.
>>
>XXXTREME BIG DATA

what did they mean by this?
>>
>>53922716
I think it means it has an FPGA built in so you can implement processing on that where it would be significantly more efficient than doing in software.
>>
>>53922931
Interesting. I know that a lot of fpga dev boards come with arm mcu's but I didn't know more powerful processors were ever paired with fpgas

Hasn't Intel started to outdo Power in niches like the mainframe market with the latest Xeons anyways?
>>
>>53921465
Why doesn't IBM do x86 anymore?
>>
>more cores
>>
>>53926638
Why would they?
>>
>>53926638
They want specialized systems, like they always had. As far as I know, their x86 computers were a minor part of the company.

In terms of why the left x86...you have to pay royalties to Intel (or get an expensive licensing deal or both, I forget), and it's not great for big data.

Intel's tried to improve it, but it's still desktop grade at best. The main bottleneck on desktop computers is processing power, but when dealing with Big Data, it's data bandwidth. The entire architecture needs to be different.
>>
>tfw just got an email from Raptor Engineering saying they're nearing the required interest for the Talos board

Who else hyped?
>>
>>53927019
I want to add my name to the list but I really don't think I'll be able to afford the board and I don't want to screw with the company.
>>
>>53927276
You should add it anyway, I've used 4 emails saying I'm interested, this board needs to come out
>>
>>53927313
Yea but if they throw a lot of money into the project and nobody buys the board, they'l probably go under. Also it might scare off other companies who were considering trying something similar and just give power8 a bad name.
>>
>>53927019
I got one to, had to write interested but can't afford 3k right now. Hope someone funds it.

Maybe we should beg https://twitter.com/OpenPOWERorg or IBM to fund it?
>>
>>53926990
Isn't the most powerful supercomputer runs on a xeon phi?
>>
>>53927346
kinda, but people dont really like using it because of how fucking aweful Phi cards are to write code for.
>>
>>53926990

I thought x86-64 processors were too different from the 80186 to be lumped together.

Why would they have to pat royalties anyway?
>>
Extreme, eh? What is this? The 90s?
>>
Does anyone else find it funny as fuck how much /g/ collectively jerks it raw over POWER while they shit on every other non-x86/ARM platform and their users?

Shit, I think I've only seen like one or two people on /g/ that have even touched a real POWER system like an RS/6 or System p.
>>
>>53927346
That doesn't mean the architecture is the most well-suited for the job, if you stick a bunch of them in some racks then of course they can outrun smaller systems by sheer brute force no matter how optimized they are.

>>53927501
x64 can fundamentally be boiled down to a fast 386 with 64-bit extensions. It still runs the same 8086 code in the end.
>>
wait until i9, plebs

Questions. I'm considering buying. Does this has a backdoor like x86 has? I can run all applications on it right? Like 32bit and 64bit stuff? How is the performance compared to shitntel and ayymd?

Power8 fucking WORKSTATION motherboards are almost $4000. If you think power9 is going to make a difference in any sort of consumer market to be able to bankrupt Intel, you're fucking retarded

Not him and full noob heard the first time of it. What is the purpose of this? Does this mean you can't run an desktop os on it?
>>
>>53930686
You can, but a lot of software you'd normally find a binary for - like libreoffice or firefox - you'll have to compile yourself. There's also software made specifically for x86 platforms that just will not work on a POWER-based system because it's trying to execute instructions that just don't exist.
