Im converting out of windows to linux
What is best version of linux, or best for start?

Ubuntu Gnome is a good choice, but be prepared for some culture shock Gnome. Of the major desktop projects Gnome's interface is the least like Windows and is very centered around switching between modes and efficient use of the keyboard. If you're trying to get away from Windows interface to make a clean break it could be a good choice.
If you want something more familiar so you aren't facing as much change at once then you might do better with slightly more familiar desktop. Something like Mate (Ubuntu Mate), or XFCE (Xubuntu).
