Why is intel giving me no reason to upgrade from an i7-4770k.
>>
the consumer market is putting emphasis on power consumption.

the 2500k is slated to last until y2500 at this rate.
>>
>>53914792
you meant 2600k :^)
>>
>>53914771
Because there will be no performance improvements anymore which are worth changing your CPU. Now it's only about power consumption and energy efficiency. Portable devices and HTPC are the future of tech development for at least next 10-20 years or so, nobody cares about consumer grade traditional PCs. If you are interested in raw performance then you should start saving money for workstation aka server grade hardware.
>>
You could always get an octacore
>>
i7 6700K

there
>>
>>53914771
intel still hasnt given me a reason to upgrade from my 2500k

>using the smiley with a carat nose
>>
I mean, there ARE reasons. Poor people just pretend there have been no improvements to justify keeping their old shit.
>>
>>53914792
Haven't there been reports of the 2500k dying or at least being more unstable with modern software? I'm sure some people may scream forced obsolescence but I have a feeling Sandy Bridge users will be pretty much forced to upgrade if they keep using bleeding edge stuff.
>>
>>53916155
>Haven't there been reports of the 2500k dying or at least being more unstable with modern software?
No it has nothing to do with software, the damn thing has an unlocked multiplier so guess what? people may have it running ridiculous overclocks at retarded voltages that in the span of half a decade made the fucking thing unstable.
nobody else's CPU is misbehaving but the ones who were already living on the edge.

forced obsolescence would be much more subtle.

because its awesome m8e

consumer desktop cpu market is dead

You sound like you know what you're talking about.

Can I run virtual machines on unlocked K processors? I'm having trouble atm.
>>

>Can I run virtual machines on unlocked K processors? I'm having trouble atm.
yeah you can, only hardware passthrough is going to be a problem iirc 2500k doesn't have VT-d.

whats the problem exactly?
>>
there's no real reason to upgrade from an i7 930 either

>2500k doesn't have VT-d.

Correct, that's what I have too, so maybe that's the issue. When I load up the machine it comes up with the windows logo and says repairing environment and then I get pic related.

I previously went into the BIOS and enabled intel virtualization technology which solved part of it but I'm still left with this.
>>
>>53916459
this looks more like a Virtual box config issue, you should choose a 64bit windows guest.

or if your Host OS is 32bit windows then you can't run a 64bit Guest OS obviously.

>>
>>53916146
Not that there are no improvements, it's just not worth the asking price. You're looking at a 20-25% CPU performance improvement at best, and this is when most games are GPU bound anyway.
>>
>i3 2120

Deal with it jews.

I just got a i3-2130 refurb, slapped in a SSD and it's fast enough for just about anything.

Reminder that skyfags CANNOT upgrade to a 6core processor without a new motherboard.
>>
>>53917006
Fuck intel and his mobo politics.
>>
>>53917006
One of the only remaining reasons to buy a desktop PC is it's easy and inexpensive to upgrade, and they go and pull this. It's like Intel wants to march traditional desktops right into the grave.

When you can buy a chink miniPC for ~$100 or a laptop for ~$200 that does almost everything normies would need it for, you know shit's fucked.

What
>>
I'm going to upgrade my 2500k when zen is avalaible, but I'll do so only to save money, because after 5 years the chances of the motherboard or cpu dying are much higher.
If I manage to switch to AM4 and sell a working p67+2500k combo for 200-250$ I will actually save money instead waiting till they die to upgrade.
>>
>>53917154
It's time for you to stop using legacy tech and upgrade.
>>
>>53917154
its probably just microcode updates pushed by M$ via windows update, I doubt windows 10 will refuse to install on an older processor.
>>53917089
normies transcode vids and stuff too they can very well tell the difference between a movie taking 15 mins to convert in a diff format on a 100$ box and a single minute on a 1000$ box.
>>
>>53916824
>using the smiley with a circle nose
>>
>>53917240
You don't understand; only Windows 10 and its successors will be able to run Kaby Lake, i.e. no Kaby Lake for OSX/Linux/etc.
>>
>>53917299
>will be the only supported Windows platform
It did not say the only supported platform
>>
>>53917299
>the only supported Windows platform
>no Kaby lake for Lunix
lol
>>
>>53917299
yeah right and apple will up and switch to AMD processors just like that when they have a butt buddy relationship with Intel.

I just can't see it happening, stop with this
>the sky is falling guize ,i swear.

>normies transcode vids and stuff too they can very well tell the difference between a movie taking 15 mins to convert in a diff format on a 100$ box and a single minute on a 1000$ box.

They just upload that shit to Youtube or Facebook and let their servers re-encode it.
>>
>>53917299
Forced secure boot is not going to happen.
>>
>>53914771

We mobil now son.

Getting more performance is hard lowering heat and power consumption has more opportunity.
>>
>>53917396
and even if it did? didn't M$ issue keys for 100$ to everyone that wanted a part of the program back when windows 8 came out iirc the Fedora project did buy one.
>>
>>53917240

I have Windows 10 and Windows Server 2012R2 installed on Q6600. So.. I also don't think that the processors "age" will be a problem.
>>
>>53917299
Windows 10 is the only supported Windows platform, it says nothing about Mac or Linux. It's just Microsoft being lazy, they don't give a shit about 7 or 8.1 anymore, which is odd considering 8.1 is still supposed to receive mainstream support.
>>
>>53916552
>You're looking at a 20-25% CPU performance improvement at best
Over haswell? More like 10% if that.
>>
>>53917429
yeah Its most probably a misinterpretation or click baiting by tech media about M$ just not pushing microcode updates via windows update.

just update your bios if you so care about the microcode fixes so much, it'd have the same effect only permanently instead of as a hotfix every time you boot the OS.

>Developers in the Fedora camp have evidently come to the conclusion that they do not want to force their users to endure such an experience to be able to install Fedora on their systems. So Fedora has chosen to take a different approach. Availing themselves of the Microsoft developer program, they will purchase a Microsoft-signed key for $99, then use that key to sign a minimal bootloader. UEFI-enabled hardware will then consent to boot that bootloader, which will immediately turn around and boot a special version of the GRUB2 bootloader which, in turn, will boot the Fedora kernel. A Fedora system set up in this mode should boot on a system with secure boot enabled with no changes required.

Not quite. It's portable devices, the cloud, and VR video games.
>>
>>53916459
Why does the font rendering in Windows look OK on the recovery screen but utter shit once you're actually in the OS?
