Hey /g/, I haven't browsed here and haven't really ever paid much attention to technical details about Windows but I have an easy question.

I'm worried about graphics performance with Win 7 vs Win 8.1 vs Win 10. My GPU is a higher-end AMD card from 2013 and will be able to utilize DX12 to the fullest, but I probably don't care about Windows 10 until then. I don't care about boot times much, just quick response (I have a SSD) and graphics performance on DX11 and OpenGL(?). I play games like EU4, Xcom 2, Far Cry 3/4 occasionally, Fallout 4, etc. Mostly modern titles that are fairly demanding.

My laptop is running 8.1 but it's my Desktop's copy and it's a bit annoying with the occasional pop ups to activate it. Would I be losing any graphics performance or functionality 'downgrading' to Win 7 from 8.1 or no?

I know it's a pretty dumb question so thanks for any help.

They're pretty much the same in terms of 3D performance. You can gain a slight boost in 7 if you disable desktop composition (it frees some VRAM, depending on your resolution, up to 200MB I think). which you can't do on 8.

Windows 7 will support DirectX 11.1, whereas Windows 8 supports up to 11.2. However, no games to this day use 11.2, let alone DX 12, so using windows 7 will not negatively impact your games' performance. Older games will also likely run better on windows 7 due to better compatibility, which was somewhat lacking in windows 8 in a few cases.

Keep in mind that such chart is quite old and now performance on windows 10 is pretty much on par. Choose which ever OS you want, consider that DX12 is hardly relevant at the moment.
