If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Got me a 3rd gen X1C yesterday, and besides the fact that it is a faggy ultrabook, I really like it.

HOWEVER:
Its a TN screen. Now, I have been using TNs all my live, and since it is still 200% better than the shitscreen I have on my current X200, that is not too bad, but still, I am not sure if I want to spend 800€ for a TN machine.

fuck, /tpg/, what should I do? Keep it, and be happy with the fact that I still have a better display than all of the folks here who fell for the 420#balzeit meme, or send it back and spend 400 more and get me the current gen one (or T460s) with an IPS?
>>
>>53913160
I'd keep it, if you're happy with the performance, I too will fall for the T420 blaze it pad once I get the extra cash.
>>
>>53913179
that thing just flies, and the 4G modem has great reception at my place, compared to the dongle I used previously. Also, windows quotes me around 9 hours of battery, so I guess more than 5 should be easily maneageable under linux, but still, there is this slight feeling that the screen will annoy me.

Guess I can always sell it for an OK price. The X1's seem to keep their value a bit better than most other TP's

TFW upgraded from a T420 to a T440p ab the keyboard was a massiv downgrade. Now got a x220 as a sidekick and pretty much i am more on my x220 as on my t440ü
>>
I'm going to repost in /sqt/ when the new thread opens, but since it's ThinkPad related:

I would like to control keyboard (and mouse if possible) inputs for my ThinkPad X220, from my desktop.
What i ideally want is a way to plug a usb cable between my PC and ThinkPad and have my PC send keystrokes, that will mimic an actual keyboard (and mouse) being plugged into the laptop, so that a script is indistinguishable from a human press. (no programs running on my ThinkPad).

Is such a think possible? or will I have to build a robot with motors and have a stick poke the required keys?
>>
>>53913252
>Also, windows quotes me around 9 hours of battery, so I guess more than 5 should be easily maneageable under linux
Nice. Just fucking around in an [spoiler]ubuntu[/yeah, I know, now spoilers here] live system, and after installing TLP and swithcing WWAN off, but WIFI on, it now quotes between 10 and 7 hours.

About to jump on a genuine 9 cell for x220 but this one in particular says it was manufactured in April 2012. Will it still be fine and hold close to 100% charge? It is new and sealed

Just bought T540p and noticed that it has ExpressCard(I think?) slot that isn't mentioned in the think wiki

Planning on purchasing a used W520 for ~370e.

Is it too bulky to be carried around in a backpack? Will use it as desktop replacement but also need to carry it to school 'n such.

Has anyone successfully done KVM and VGA passtrough to a windows VM with a thinkpad that has integrated graphics + additional one? Like with the W520, Intel HD 3000 + Nvidia Quadro 2000M?
>>
>>53913846
Why you just dont get a T520 with hd3000 + quadro 2000m? Its lighter. The w520 was fuckin huge in my opinion
>>
>>53913886
Thinkpads are pricey here in scandinavia, as everyone knows they're superb, they're in high demand. Just spotted a W520 in an auction, and i think i could score it for about 370e (i7 processor etc). Usually in scandinavian "craigslist" one seems to go for 600-700e.

Originally i craved for a T430 (and i still do), it's just that an i5-model with 1600x900 display costs ~350-400e aswell, so that's why i asked about W520.

T540p with i3-4000m haswell should have it too then, because I almost bought an mSATA drive since I put one in friends T430s
Is the slot like it was with mSATA - I have to put it in mini PCI express or is there a seperate slot ?
>>
>>53914149
i just replaced my second m2 slot wwan card with the ssd. first one is reserved for wifi
>>
>>53914303
Yeah, my second slot is empty, WWAN is useless for me, just not sure, haven't really checked how big is it, because most m.2 drives are 80mm, at least the better ones
So mPCI = m.2 then ? Because on think wiki it writes as mini PCI with the wifi and WWAN, but doesn't mention m.2 at all
>>
>>53914311
According to german thinkwiki its m2 and m2 =/= mPCI

"Wechsel von mPCIe zu M.2"

So I bought a T440p last may and I had a ton of problems with it. The lighting of the screen is really bad and I had the screen replaced twice now, but it will breake again, as the screen or sreens themselves are not the problem, but the frame that keeps pushing on it. After a while, there will be a purple spot when it is suposed to show black.

I really want to return it and get a used X220 because that is sufficient for me and I need that extra money. But the guys at the store refuse to take it back, claiming, that Lenovo needs 3 chances to repaire it, wich I am pretty sure is incorrect, at least according to german law. Obviously I don't want to take them to court though...

Any one have any experiences with anything like that? Any tips?

Oh, and they forgot to put a piece of the plastic case back on when they repaired it last time...

Getting a T420 next week:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-Thinkpad-i5-2520M-Professional-Wireless/dp/B00T7P7S68?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_4&smid=A1CSPH6UNIUWE0

Going to be upgrading to 8GB RAM, and maybe getting a new screen for it if I don't like it, potentially also upgrading the HDD in the future.

What can I expect from the battery life with that one ^? It's refurbished, no way to test it out first or anything. Main things I'm going to be doing will be programming, browsing the internet etc., nothing too heavy.

Also any general advice for the T420, is there anything I should look out for, or that I'll definitely want to upgrade etc?

Cheers
>>
Guys I have a question in general about batteries. Specially about the one on a T420 (not sure if it's a 6cell or 9cell. I bought it used, lasts about 3 to 4 hours depending on use)

What is best practice? To always let the battery fully discharge? To let it discharge to a certain point and then plug it in? Or just freely plug it in whenever you get the chance, even if it's at 50% or 90%?

I don't really know what the recommended practices are for extending battery life, so I wanted to ask here.
>>
>>53915689
Well, like I said here >>53915698 my used T420's battery lasts 3 to 4 hours, maybe 5 with very light usage and lower screen brightness. But I'm not sure if it's the same battery as yours or the wear level.
>>
>>53915632
This is maximum tier bate.

>Aesthetics.
I suppose it's subjective. Definitely an immature mentality if you think that they look cool.

alienware is reknown for fan issue and thermal issues in their laptops. They're pretty bad and longevity is shit tier. You never see anybody with an alienware that's >2 years old.

Dell makes good products. Dell OWNS alienware. Alienware is becoming more and more like Dell. The only good thing Dell does is monitors because they use proprietary systems.

It's -not- built like a rock. I've used them in person. It's just more plastic.

They work -okay- with Linux OS's.

>Source?
Just go online. There is no one source on this. Look at everybody complaining about their alienware. They are like every other laptop. They just don't last very long.

>Doesn't know his warranty information
Jej

>Inferior hardware
Top jejerino. You paid an extra 400 for an 80$ increase in graphics power and a literally useless amount of RAM and cheap LED lights and a panel that's not going to give you any benefit because you can't game at 4K on a 970M.

Sweet memes.
>>
>>53915714
I'm considering also getting a 9cell at some point for if I need it on a long journey or something, maybe keep it charged as a spare for when the 6cell runs out. Not sure whether that'd be worth the price though
>>
>>53915496
Thanks. Might have to pull the trigger afterall.
>>
>>53915724
>It's -not- built like a rock. I've used them in person. It's just more plastic.
The top is made of aluminum and the part where your hands go is a rubberized plastic, very sturdy m8

32 GB of RAM is not useless, on average I'm using anywhere from 10 to 20 depending on what I'm doing.

I don't play games, but this laptop has the thunderbolt port and a port for an Alienware Graphics Amplifier, either of which would allow me to hook up a faster graphics card should I want to game in the future.

>You never see anybody with an alienware that's >2 years old.
Maybe they just use them at home like me, because they're embarrassed to be seen with an old laptop or don't like the gamer aesthetic any more.
>>
>>53915856
>Uses 10-20GB of RAM and doesn't play games.
Sold it right there. Nobody buys an Alienware as a workstation BECAUSE the longevity of the product is shit tier at best.

I have thunderbolt as well. Too bad it's a literally meme and you get a >30% performance loss with whatever card you buy as an eGPU.

They don't use them because they don't work. If they were embarrassed they'd try to sell it. Ayyliumware look futuristic. Even the first few don't look like an /old/ laptop.

>>
I'm gonna ask this again since last posted in the wee hours of the morning:

Will a new genuine battery that was manufactured in 2012 still hold close to 100% charge?
>>
>>53916369
1600x900 is a must. Check ones in good condition (obviously) and if some parts need upgrading (ram, hdd -> ssd) calculate those parts in.

I'd recommend to get one with sufficient parts already in or get a very basic model for cheap and buy upgrade parts used and cheap. Also if you wish to use it on battery get one with a 9 cell or otherwise good condition battery. Real Lenovo batteries cost a ton.

Cost wise, the price should be around 200 eur
>>
>>53916619
I'm not an expert but don't batteries need to be activated (used for the first time) before they start depleting? Other wise it would be dead since normally batteries drain constantly and after going under the "real" 0% it dies completely.
>>
Has anyone ever come across an x220 with a resolution higher than 1366x768?

My T420 running Arch has had some issues with the battery as of late. Basically sometimes acpid stops recognizing the battery and its charge %, telling me its unknown. no, you need a taobao agent who you can trust really well, and then his commission + shipping to US would make that screen seem a lot less attractive... but i know some people on /fa/ use taobao agents so they can get their fake clothes and shit

there's also one in japan, but that one requires some soldering i think, not sure if this one does either though, but i know that when you do this upgrade you cant adjust screen brightness, its stuck on full bright

first check out to see if you find any good buy it now options.

find ones nearest to you first, then watch those bids if they're at a low price

don't bid on things that have a few days left, totally useless and you're just bringing the price up.

only bid when there are MINUTES left, this is called sniping. keep refreshing and then raise your highest bid to what you'd pay for it max comfortably

Hello, everyone. I have an HP Elitebook 2530p that won't boot. His battery LED keeps flashing constantly. The notebook is connected to the AC power and it does not have a battery (the previous owner removed it). I have already tried 2 power supplies, the first one was a universal one, the other was designed to supply exactly the voltage and the current needed (18.5 V @ 3.5 A). Has anyone of you solved this kind of problem before? Thanks in advance.

>What's considered beyond repair?
Depends entirely on what you're willing to do.
Anything can be repaired, it's more about cost vs benefit and THAT is more about the number of components that will need replacing, not the type.
You don't want to buy a complete lemon with every component fucked.

>Also, any bidding tips
I'll tell you the best strategy, don't treat it like an auction.
Work out the maximum price you would be willing to pay for the item.
Wait until the auction has between two and five seconds left, depending on your reaction time and internet speed.
Then you bid your maximum price.

Ebay doesn't immediately submit the actual amount you bid, it's more like a holding price.
If the current bid is 110 dollars and you bid 200, it'll bump the current bid up to 120 when you bid and then every time someone tries to outbid you it'll keep bumping the price up to just over their offer until it goes over your 200, and then they'll have top bid.
>>

As an owner of an X220 and T430, I'd say get a cheap T-series instead of an X series. The extra screen real estate is nice for programming with the T-series, unless you can find an X-series with a 1600x900 screen, then X-series all the way. But the major thing is to get a 1600x900 screen.

Might be wrong, but looks like maybe a T60 or T60p. I personally wouldn't, IBM thinkpads are neat and have a nice 16:10 screen ratio, but the hardware is pretty outdated. I would'nt get anything older than an X220 or T420 so you have a Sandybridge cpu.

when a little bit of debris works itself into the screen (happens to any screen that's not sealed-- almost none are), it wears fuzzy patches into the backlight diffuser. This has happened more and more as screens have gotten thinner.

Why don't Lenovo make any more 11.6" laptops which aren't shitty Yogas or 'IdeaPads'?

I have pic related and its a brilliant machine. I wish Lenovo would make a version of this updated with current level specs for around £350 - £400.
>>
>>53919306

>horrible keyboard

E130 here, you fail to realize that this particular model is basically identical to the x121e from like a year before, it just had upgraded specs. Build quality is great, its a solid machine and the keyboard is amazing to type on. Lenovo really hit the spot with this design, the trackpad isn't huge because you barely use it much anyway, its big enough for the small part it plays, very nicely positioned trackpoint buttons with excellent feedback too.

Any real problems with this machine that I've not noticed or are you just a brainless alphabet elitist who questions nothing with an X in the name? We all know shit like the IdeaPads are terrible but the older E series machines aren't too bad, the E130 isn't bad at all, its amazing.

You should commit suicide out of shame and leave those poor people alone.

If they were scamming surely they'd leave better CPU stickers on... God you're dumb.

Depends how many PCIe looking slots you have. Pic related is the same machine as mine, its got one PCIe slot taken up by the wifi card (which usually will not support an mSATA SSD) and its got a spare space, that spare space is for an mSATA drive. I've got an EVO 850 in mine.
>>
>>53927042

Just to clarify, if you've only got one available slot, you probably wont be able to put anything in there other than a network card.

Really the only good thing are USB ports. Expresscard SSDs are expensive as dicks, and there's not really a point to eGPUs, as a desktop with a graphics card is way more useful and powerful.

I just put a mSata SSD in my x220t today. The wifi was right next to the mSata slot.
>>
>>53923533
I could barely get to play it in a acceptable framer rate in my T420s. Like, 25FPS with everything turned down.
>>
Just got a x200t with the ultrabase in great condition for 75$ total. How long should I expect the hinge and screen/stylus to last with daily use? I can't seem to find any documentation on it failing.
>>
>>53925107
T440 might be better value, just change the cancer trackpad.
>>
>>53927513
Screen and hinge last ~ forever. Stylus depends on use, but spare tips cost ~ nothing on eBay.

>tfw getting X1 carbon today
Gonna use it as a tool to learn Linux / Debian.

Is it that bad?

I know tpg doesn't like talking about it but how does a e550 compare to a x220 in terms of power, battery life and heat?

I bought an X201 last year from this asian student who had taken really good care of it, you could tell it was his baby. He had installed a 128gb SSD in it but that's about it, stock i5 and 4gb RAM.

I fucking love this laptop, the keyboard is just amazing. It feels so nice and I literally never make mistakes when typing. I'm running Fedora 23 workstation on it currently and it just works flawlessly. I was previously using it as a SAP server for ABAP dev in windows and again it performed really well for that purpose. Now it's just my baby for sitting in bed and tinkering.
I paid 150 AUD for it and honestly I feel really happy with how much I spent.

Not him but I believe there is a certain group of people here who worship the original 7 row 'mechanical' keyboards from the older models and simply refuse to even acknowledge that the newer model might not be as shit as they imagine it to be.

Other than that I have to disagree in part. I was until recently using an Edge 11 which is too one of the older E series and the build quality was quite lacking. At some point I also had to switch the mobo because the graphics died. Though that might have something to do with it being an AMD model. Other than that, yeah, it was quite nifty little machine.

aren't the letters bigger on a smaller resolution?

Good buy, I'm also the kind of person to pay a little extra for a laptop that is a pampered desk baby.

Man, I'm not that guy. But for real it's a matter of preference.
I have actually met some mutants who prefer the chiclet keyboard.
>>
>>53930953
Think of it this way.
The old (good) keyboard is like a normal keyboard. It is a sea of keys through which your fingers flow and knowledge ebbs. It is an ocean purely of typing essence. It is magnificent. It is powerful. Grand and romantic, it is unrivaled by its utility, nostalgic value, and affinity for humanity's usage.
The new chiclet keyboard (bad) is like puddles of seived diarrhoeal fluid layed over an Indian landfill. It is surely a marvel, but is of little use, and you only want to say you were there to impress your normie friends with doing volunteer work in the third world.

>>53931829
Well one can get used to typing on shit. I have a lenovo chiclet keyboard at work that I love.
>>
Anyone here using a USB 3 express card in their older thinkpads? How well do they work? Do they have any impact on battery life?
>>
>>53931978
Yes they have. And a big one.

I only use USB3.0 at home fortunately.
>>
>>53913067
I got my first ThinkPad today off eBay. X220 - excellent condition. Early observations: The keyboard is glorious, apart from FN and Ctrl which I have switched the BIOS. Fairly impressed so far.
