why does it have to be a general...

Would you rather a bunch of threads cluttering the catalog?

What would be a good, small smartphone? Budget is 500€, I live in Belgium. A long lasting battery would be Nice, I don't neef anything else. The xperia z5c looks nice.
>>
>>53912586
Yeah that's pretty much your best option... really the only small Android device that doesn't make too many compromises. Only the iPhone SE is really comparable, but it is the essentially the same size with a smaller display (see OP pic)
>>
>>53912577
for one making a general makes people less liekyl to go to other threads. Its also such a blkanket term that it includes literally everything thats not people ricing homescreens, or perhaps it does.
>>
>>53912586
Redmi 3 is decent
>>
>>53912586
get the miku one
>>
Oneplus one or x?
I am with the S3 now and need something big and good
>>
>>53912586
Z5C and iPhone SE are about the same price. The SE is faster and has a better camera but the Z5C is water resistant and a bit bigger. The rest is up to personal preference. Both will have great battery life with 5 hours screen on time.
>>
>>53912646
The X is smaller, has limited LTE bands, and no NFC. Go for the One.
>>
>>53912646
Get the two, the X is mediocre.
>>
>>53912396
isn't it because they keep making the glass thinner, and the over body/bezels more compact. this just increases the likeliness of breaking

The 5C has 2700mAh vs 1642mAh (Apple iPhone SE), you get a better resolution (720 x 1,280px vs 640 x 1,136px), SD Support and better CPU speeds (8 x 2GHz vs 2 x 1.84GHz).

Go for the Z5c if you can afford it and your mobile bands support it.

>>53912648
Use specs when comparing phones, "faster" and "better camera" are relative terms.
>>
what would be the best way to code c++ on the go on my smartphone?!
>>
>>53912586
>500€
>>
>>53912876
The SoC might have a higher clock rate and now cores, but the A9 is a better chip. SE has a smaller battery but should get relatively good battery life, but z5c is no slouch (although apparently worse than Z3C)

But I think iOS is too locked down for my tastes.
>>
>>53912923
Do you mind telling me what's wrong with that budget?

Get some kind of warranty or insurance policy with a more modestly priced phone. Also why do you want a phone so powerful with such a small screen??

Is the Nexus 6p still pretty good?
I'm coming into some cash net week and I wanna upgrade, I really like the look of the Nexus 6p but I know smartphone tech moves pretty quick so I don't wanna buy a phone thats already past its prime.
I know most smartphones can pretty much do anything others can these days, I mean hell I'm currently using an S3 and managing just fine, but I probably won't upgrade for a few years after this.

From what I can tell the 6p is still very good and I really like its looks over a lot of other phones out there.

Thoughts an suggestions?
>>
>>53913080
Budget? If you want a stock android go for it. But if you want something with the latest specs you might want to try something else.
>>
>>53912876
Stats like this are irrelevant as fuck. SE got a faster SoC (twice as fast for single core tasks), MUCH faster NAND and about the same battery life.

>Use specs when comparing phones, "faster" and "better camera" are relative terms.
Benchmarks you mean. Specs don't tell you a thing. My Z3C got a 20.1 MP camera, tons of phones with 8, 12 or 16MP are WAY better.

>>53912927
I'd reconsider your stance about iOS, it's a lot better than it was before and SE is simply a much better phone than Z5C, specially if it's apparently even slower than Z3C.

If you really can't live with iOS, I'd go with some cheaper Chinkphone, maybe Galaxy Alpha if you can find it for 300-400 bucks. Spending 500€ on Android is silly.
>>
>>53913080

Nexus fanboys aside, it's one of the best phones out there. It probably can't compete with S7 or an iPhone on pure specs & benchmarks, but user reviews always say how responsive and fast it feels.

Is it just me or does it seem like Vernee is somewhat beating Elephone at their own game; they announce a Lite version of the Apollo which also has the Helio X20 and 4gb ram (The Elephone P9000 was supposed to have an X20 or X10, but they changed it to the P10 at the last minute, and also released a Lite version of their flagship).

Then there was the budget targeted $120 Elephone Ivory that was canceled in January due to "supply problem" for components.
>Android 6.0, 2.5D curved 720p display, MTK6753, 2gb/16gb, 13MP/2MP, sd slot up to 32gb, 2800mAh

And here Vernee has a Thor model set to release which entered pre-order this week for $120 ($99 for special promotions) with the SAME exact body, glass design, capacitive buttons. Even the same rear camera and flash placement. But with some improvements.
>Android 6.0, 2.5D curved 720p, MTK6753, 3gb/16gb, 13MP/5MP, fingerprint sensor, sd slot up to 128gb, 2800mAh

I tried asking one of their retailers what camera sensors were on the Thor but the only response I got was "It is made in china." I expect the Vernee to enter the US with the Thor since it's got a partnership deal with Uber (it's supposed to have a really good GPS)..

Poorfag coming from a nexus 5 here.
How's the doogee ht6? I want something with amazing battery life. I love the industrial look of the k10000 but it's just too big and heavy.

Currently getting 4 hours SoT average.

Can I root the ht6? How's performance? Is it silly to buy a 5.1 phone with Android n coming out soon?

For people who have purchased flagship/high-end phones:

What's the most you've ever spent on a phone?
How long did you use it?
Was it worth it?

My first smartphone was about $600, and I would have preferred to use it until it was falling apart but it's just not good for my needs. I'm switching it out when my contract is up later this year.
I thought I was gonna be fine with a $3-400 phone, but now I'm debating something on the very high end.
>>
>>53913168
My first flagship was the nexus 5, I've had it since December 2013.
>>
>>53913146
well that one is better, thank you
>>
>>53913168

Well all my phones have been free because my sister works for Vodafone.

Unforunately she's left, so I have to buy myself a phone for a change. I'm probably going to shell out £5-600 for the Note 6
>>
>>53913164
Why do you want to downgrade that bad getting a Chinese no name tablet?
>>
>>53913168
Galaxy S2 for 400 euro, used it for almost 4 years and I'd say it was worth it. Current flagship prices are fucking cray though.
>>
>>53913200
6000mAh battery anon.

Plus the nexus 5 specs are pretty overkill for my uses so I think the ht6 should be fast enough.

If I can root it, I can always make the cpu governor more aggressive for better performance.
>>
>>53913164
>13MP and 5MP interpolated cameras

don't do that to yourself, save some more money, recycle a few pounds of aluminum cans and plastic bottles.
>>
>>53913220
Meh, you can root it, but again, I would recommend you to save more money, not like you can get a lot of extra performance.

I Bought the Nexus 6p 7 days ago and it has been great.

Because its stock android, even if 2016 flagships are 10% faster, Nexus 6P is still faster than them in real life performance with a 200-300€ lower price.

The camera is one of or even the best one in any smartphone at this moment.
The AMOLED screen is still the best screen you can find.
The front facing speakers are outstanding with no competition

If you like big phones, which Nexus 6p ( 5,7" ) is, then its the hands down the best phone to pick up right now.
>>
>>53913246
I don't need a lot, I just need enough.

Also I can afford more expensive phones, but I don't see the need.
Could get the ulefone power, but that's got worse battery life than the ht6, but better specs overall, could get the oukitel k10000 but that's a fucking brick.
>>
>>53913168
$300 max, ~2-3 years.

For me, buying a second hand flagship is nearly always better than getting a budget phone (although all these chink phone popping up in the last few years changed things), between the superior build quality/hardware, and the community supports.
>>
>>53913168
You should wait to see what battery comes with the HTC 10. I've bought the m7 cheap back then and it still works flawlessly (except the camera with low light which I never use). Bought the nexus 5 too but its battery life was awful. The screen shattered after falling from a 40cm height. So I use the m7 for 3 years now and battery life is getting down to 5 hours sot. Otherwise I don't have a reason to upgrade. Waiting to see what the HTC 10 has to offer.
>>
>>53913257
Hows visibility outdoors?
I haven't been able to compare them in person to thoroughly but I was shown a video where the S7's screen was much brighter.

I don't really care which is better between them as long as the 6p is still fine outdoors.
>>
>>53913257
They are much more expensive for europoors countries.
>>
Is the Redmi 3 (non Note Pro) any good?
>>
>>53913257
>Sony IMX377, 12MP, 1.55 µm pixel size, 6pc lens

It's better than the IMX214 but the IMX258 is wayy better, and comes in phones half the price of the 6P.
>>
>>53913303
It hasn't been sunny in the past 7 days (that feel) but with max brightness It looks good outside.

>>53913316
Yes they are 200€ more expensive in EU than in US but so is every other phone in EU. Its 600€ at the moment and the new flagships are 750-1000€
>>
>>53913330
yeah I have one. it's got a big little.LITTLE if you know what I mean
>>
What phone has the most visible/clearest display for someone with poor vision?

Should I be looking at size, PPI, resolution? What kind of difference will LED/AMOLED/what-have-you make?

Obviously a larger screen is going to be easier, but once we're beyond five inches what will make the biggest difference?
>>
>>53913383

iPhones and Samsung phones are traditionally the market leaders when it comes to screen quality. I would say get a Note or an iPhone plus, but honestly I'm not visually impaired so I have no idea. Just head into a store and ask to have a look at some phones, see what you like.
>>
>>53913383
PPI won't even make any difference for you if you got poor vision, neither does resolution matter since it's related to that.

I'd say larger screen and decent brightness are the priorities, that should be reached by almost any phone. AMOLED got better contrast and colors but I am not sure if they fixed the max brightness problem yet, since they were rather dark compared to some LED screens.
>>
>>53913257
also upgraded to nexus 6p from moto x play
couldnt be happier, lovely phone to use
also double tap to wake is something i love as well as the fingerprint scanner
>>
>>53913168

I've been using low cost Android phones since 2010, last one was Moto G since June 2014, it was fine for most things but quite laggy using Google voice search and multitasking with lots of apps.

So for the first time I decided to go for a flagship. Galaxy s7 with a contract with my carrier. In 30 months I'll have paid a bit more than full price for it (777 eur) but in the monthly fee there's a screen damage insurance.

There's minimum bloat from my carrier and some bloat from Samsung, and I won't root it or mess with it.

I sincerely hope it will still be more than usable in two and a half years...
>>
>>53913383
Most of the phones have accessibility options, on screen narrator, borders for text and more.
You want screen size, most likely 720x1280, since you won't notice the difference between that and 1080x1090. Maybe with a voice assistant, like Motorola voice to help you with voice commands, calls, messages and basic google research with voice feedback.
>>
I'm currently using a China phone, and while it's basically fine I'd like a phone that has some features I didn't consider to be important before. I'm having difficulty finding a phone that includes these features.

USB C 3.1
MHL or micro HDMI/display port
Two simcard slots
At least 40gb internal memory or micro SD that doesn't use a sim slot
Rootable Android
Preferably not over 5.5"
>>
>>53913303
I have mine at 50% brightness at all times and it's visible enough outside. If it's reaaaally sunny I can turn it up to 100% but it's rarely necessary.
>>
>tfw news outlets are already talking about phones with Android N

Hell, the iPhone 4S has already been upgraded to 9.x
>not that it can support it, but still.
>>
>>53913516
well I don't think a phone should get more than 3 years support since the technology is progressing so fast, but I also do know how you feel. My g3 jumped from 5.0 to 6.0

>How long did you use it?
Bought it Sept 2014, still using it currently.
>Was it worth it?
If I can get 2+ years out of it, sure it was worth it. Just wish T-Mobile would upgraded it to Marshmallow, 5.1.1 at the very least. I'm still stuck on 5.0.2

I am going to be spending much less on my next phone. No more than $450, maybe $500.
>>
>>53913546
>I don't think a phone should get more than 3 years support since the technology is progressing so fast
Now apply the same logic on PCs and you should realize how retarded the statement was.

Also phones barely progressed since 2013.
>>
>>53913168
Just got the new Samshit edge. It's currently the most I've ever spent on a phone and honestly, I'm loving every second of it. Was it worth it? Ehh YMMV. Personally I think so, as it does everything I need it to do and fast. Previously had the HTCuck m7 and while it also held up to my needs, it just wasn't as fast or powerful as the s7. Also the screen on the s7 is the most comfy I've ever had. So it really depends on how comfy you want your mobile experience to be and if you're willing to spend the extra cash for it.

my question should fit in here best I think:
My old android phone got a little wet (not my fault). Battery was immidiately removed and it was set to dry for 2 weeks or even longer. After that it booted fine, but refused to charge. I changed the charging unit and it booted up fine showing it's charging. The battery always showed 0-1% and got very hot, so I got a new battery. The new battery does not get hot at all, but still does not show more than 1%. Whenever I boot into the phone, I can use it for about 1min until it powers down. Is it possible the battery got a higher voltage and the system interprets the charging level wrong because of that? Would deleting the batterystats.bin help here or shall I try to do a wipe+new flash?

I always purchase flagships.

What's the most you've ever spent on a phone?
$800
How long did you use it?
~30 months
Was it worth it?
Sure I guess, pretty subjective though.

Too much of a pain when you trip Knox and you want software updates
Pretty good so far, loving the beauty of the screen
Transferring old files from my old phone was fucking easy too,
Plug in the old one to the USB socket, downloads then installs selected applications

>For people who have purchased flagship/high-end phones:
>What's the most you've ever spent on a phone?

$450: HTC G1. bought it off contract from a worker in a Chinese restaurant about two days after launch

>How long did you use it?

~2 years

>Was it worth it?

Absolutely. I'd used a Treo 650 and 700p before that, and a Moto Q and some blackberry, and it blew all of them out of the water. While it wasn't as fluid an experience as the iPhone, it shit all over the iphone's abilities. Absolute monster at the time.

Since then the most I've paid was however much the Nexus 5 was new. $349 or $399, can't remember. That was a great phone as well. All phones between the n5 and g1 I used were trash except for the original LG Optimus. Currently using a G3 that I bought for $150 and the novelty of getting so much phone for such a low price never wears off for me.

My iPhone 6 turned off at more 50% battery and isn't turning on again. It's probably because I ran tap water on it everyday after coming home to clean it, so I only have my autism to blame.

As someone who works for apple, we would open up the phone to check the other LCIs to see if they are triggered, but as long as you're within your year warranty and none of those are tripped, we'd replace the battery fo' free typically if our diagnostics tell us it's an issue with the battery.

What are some good ways to keep my battery keep going if I use Clover, social media ie snap fb, YouTube, Spotify, etc basic bitch shit.

Turned off Snap location and sms permission settings.
Use Disa to collectively use whatsapp, fb messenger, and text- although it's been a bit glitchy every couple hours or so.

I dunno, Snapchat is one of the worst coded apps on Android, I don't know if there's any way to use it and not lose tons of battery. Even just opening the app and viewing snaps makes the camera constantly go on (unless they changed it recently) draining battery even more. To give you an idea of how shitty it is, instead of taking a picture they take a screenshot of your viewfinder.

Maybe disabling location permission and using greenify will help reduce battery use in the background, but using it will still drain it something fierce.

Only issue I'm running into vis a vis battery is sometimes the phone will stay stuck in the "Awake" state according to the advanced battery stats, sometimes it needs a reboot to fix it. If this is happening to you, I could see the validity of complaining about poor battery life, since standby time will be much reduced.

Greenify is fairly tame without the pro version ability to hibernate system apps. You should Greenify apps you frequently use that don't send notifications. Exception is FB Messenger, which is a battery hog and Wakelock killer. So is Spotify and Snap. Your largest Wakelock should be Play Services.

Get Disable Service and Google what services you can safely disable in system apps. It's the same as permanently hibernating them. Which will cut your Play Service Wakelocks in half. Unless you're a stickler for everything Google then you can't be helped.

Hi /g/, i don't know if this is the best place to ask but my Moto E has some weird problem. When i'm using the Youtube app and watch any video, it works fine untill i plug in the IEMs and at this point it starts to play/pause continuosly without break. Why does this happen?
>>
>>53920794
Sounds like an issue with your headphones. Some headphones include a play/pause button and volume keys, it seems like your headphones are malfunctioning and the phone thinks they are constantly sending the play/pause signal.

Try with different headphones, if issue persists it's probably an issue with your 3.5mm jack or perhaps software but that's less likely.

>>53920689
I like my 5X because of vanilla Android and fast updates, and the peace of mind knowing that if something messes up Google has a good reputation for fixing issues.

What's the benefits of rooting my Nexus 5x?
And are there any drawbacks?

My main concern is battery consumption, overheating, etc.
I use my phone for social media, spotify, productivity apps ie Google keep, and things alike. No games.
>>
>>53923355
No ads. With Xposed/BusyBox/GravityBox you can make neat UI changes and work around apps. You can also improve battery life easily. I'm coming from an N5 and I get about 4.5 - 5 hours SOT from my original 2.5 to 3.

Xposed has neat little prefs like unlimited Snapchat viewing, secret picture taking without notifications, unlimited Spotify skips without Premium.
>>
>>53923355
as far as drawbacks I would name the fact that rooting requires a custom recovery which means you won't be able to get normal OTA updates and will instead have to flash updated ROMs if you want to have the latest software
>>
So, my Note 5 has been having a huge battery drain issue since it updated to Marshmellow. I still have use for Samsung Pay and other Knox-sensitive apps, so I can't root it right now. The main issue seems to be Cell Standby and the OS, even though the majority of the time, the device uses Wifi instead. I'm sure I'm being absolutely stupid and missing something important here, but I need some clarification on if the update is causing issues for anyone else or if I'm missing something. I can provide pictures of the battery if needed.

tl;dr: Note 5 started having huge Cell Standby Drain, Rooting isn't an option due to Knox apps, almost entirely uses Wifi over Cell.

Don't forget the HT6 is only quad core, and 1280x720, while the Ulefone is octa, with 3gb ram and 1920x1080, also quick charge/pump express plus.

Get the Note 2, Prime 32gb model is only $150. If you're planning to be away from an electrical charging source that long on vacation somewhere just get an extra battery or powerbank.

The Helio X10 @1080p btfo the MT6735 quad core @720p, more than double on antutu. And the cameras on the Note 2 are better; Samsung Isocell 13MP rear vs the Homtom HT6 Interpolated 8MP sensor. Front is a good Omnivision 5MP too with the same 1.12µm pixel-size. I wouldn't sacrifice all that just for battery life.
