Just installed XP on an old computer with 1 GB of ram
>Boots almost as fast from HDD as Windows 7/8/10 boots from SSD
>Windows update fast as fuck
>Everything loads instantly
>Uses barely 200 MB of ram
It just seems so... clean. How did Microsoft fuck up so badly? Does any Windows developer actually even understand what the fuck they are doing?
>>
Install Gentoo for faster boottimes and less ram

>>

I'm wondering the same about how your shitty teletubby operating system can use 200 MB of RAM when my NT4 installation eats barely over 40.

>Windows Update
Windows XP is no longer being updated
>>
>>53912260
>look mom, I mindlessly regurgitated the FUD again!
OS media doesn't ship with updates put out after its release, dumbass. XP still connects to WU just fine and even receives major security fixes until 2019 with a simple registry modification.

Oldfags bragging about being an oldfag are more hipsters.

That's not a hipster, retard. Hipsters do what they do because it's trendy, a trashy grandma staple like Windows XP is not trendy.
>>

>200MB ram
WOW.

Ubuntu mate is more secure, more functional, and uses only 300MB ram on boot.

>>53912469
You still feel like you are different special snowflake. That's the whole idea of hipsterism.
>>
>>53911590
they moved away from NT being a microkernel.
and too many (ineffective) security measures
>>
>>53912478
No, not really. Being a special snowflake is being a special snowflake, that's merely just an additional component that typically, but not always comes along with hipsterism.

XP's not really olddfag, nor is it outside the mainstream, nor is it trendy in the slightest except in its usage as a dank meme to trigger gamertards and Windows 10 shills.

poastin from WinXP Pro, old HP Pavilion system (circa 2005), been running off a 2.5" WD black 750 GB notebook HDD since 2011

Pentium 4 550 @3.4 GHz
330 watt PSU
2 GB DDR RAM
GT 430 1024 MB DDR3
system HDD 70 GB
2x 2TB HDDs filled w/ anime & music
dual monitors, 24" 1920x1200 Dell U2415

right now, with two minor applications running plus firefox with 12 open tabs, total RAM use 588 MB; I rarely ever see it go into the 1.0-1.2 GB range.

> Bretty Comfy Edition

I maintain Win7, Win 8/8.1 & 10 systems for various friends and family, have a Win7 system dedicated to heavy-lifting (games, ripping/encoding, etc.). They all feel sluggish and retarded compared to my XP system. Probably 5-7 hours a day the XP system is in use for web surfing email documents ereading 4chinz shitpoastin ... I don't even boot my Win7 system every day, more like 3-4 times a week, and usually for 3-4 hours at most.

The XP system runs at ~70-85 watts power for the main box plus ~30 watts for each monitor (I often turn the second one off if not using it). The Win7 system boots to 180 watts use before I start running anything and it gets up to 200-220 almost instantly when something gets launched. Running even "light" games (Shogun 2) and it's 350 watts, plus monitor.

I've been tempted to junk my XP system several times in the last three years, but fuck it. It just works amazing well and amazingly fast for 80% of all the productivity shit I have to do each day.

And it's streaming nearly 3 TB of FLAC through a 24-bit card into my receiver. Cozy, cozy workspace, decibel rating about 15 at 3 feet away from my ear, and it doesn't act like a space heater in the summer and require air conditioning be on all day long. Almost wish it did generate more heat in the winter.

Virus protection: MSE + common sense, 2016 edition and haven't had a single virus since about 2000 (before the Cheney administration).

how well does xp work on a ssd? I'm repairing an old system and an adapter and a msata ssd is cheaper, bigger, and much faster than a compatible hdd.

>>
>>53912910
just as fine as on an hdd, boots almost instantly
but you dont get the bonus of trim, if you use a decent/good ssd then all is well, if you use a crap one (those with lsi or marvel controllers) the lifespan of the drive will be severely affected if a lot of data is shuffled/written in it
if you plan on using a low end machine with xp and an ssd as a fb machine then it should be fine (browser caching wont trash the drive that much), but i would still avoid write TBs of data on xp+ssd (eg torrenting)
>>
>>53914259
I plan on using mostly for old games like fallout and morrowind and some other rts type games. I tried xubuntu but wine can't run some of the games smoothly on my machine.

I'll be using a micron c400, which I believe uses a micron controller. Is there anything I can do to increase the amount of time it takes for xp to destroy my drive? I can try running win 7 (as it's fully compatible) but I think it will be rough with only 512 mb of ram.

>installing gimped embedded Windows on a regular desktop when you can just install regular desktop Windows and receive the same updates
Why?
>>
>>53916945
I've been running it for months with no issues, how exactly is it gimped? Besides, I'd rather have the "gimped" OS than a false sense of security.
>>
>>53916945
In what way is it gimped? Seems fully operational to me, other than coming with a bit less crap preloaded.

You haven't even used it and already calling it gimped, you little shit. Install it on VM at least and then go ahead and tell me how gimped it is.
>>
>>53917009
>>53917054
I'm actually just shitposting, but what "false sense of security" are you on about? It's the same fucking operating system with the same core components that will receive the same updates.
>>
Next try Server 2003 (or amd64 version of Xp) and be pleasantly surprised; explorer is faster than even before or after and io performance also.
>>
>>53912722
Hey bro. I, too am still riding the XP wave. MS is a business, even if the OS reaches feature bloat they still gotta release something new to make money, right.

Have you thought about using POSReady2009? I was just thinking you want to stay on top of security updates. I'm using the trial and just reinstall every 120 days.
>>
>>53917101
It's not the exact same OS, and since it's not, components XP has that POSReady 2009 doesn't don't get updated, leaving potential vulnerabilities. Sure it may not happen, buy why risk it when it's easier to install POSReady 2009 than it is to install XP and do the registry mod?
>>
>>53911590
XP is just dirtied up 2000
>>
>>53917259
Google POSReady 2009 key and choose one at random. Enjoy legit POSReady 2009
>>
>>53917266
Which components? Most of the biggest security flaws in the system thus far seem to involve components they both share in common.
>>
>>53917340
I don;t have a list at hand but I can tell you for sure it's more than XP with a new theme
>>
>>53917294
It's cool, I prefer to stay legit (and I keep wgalogon installed, I know MS will blacklist an oem key soon)

I might be forced to move to Thin PC (MS's stripped down Windows 7, there's a trial) by Mozilla if they don't fix HTML5 playback on XP though.
>>
>>53917340
Probably media related, WMP codecs etc, movie maker (it had at least 1 vulnerability in the past).

You can't install Office on POSReady
>>
>>53917362
According to a cursory look at http://www.msembedded.biz/en/embedded-software/windows-embedded-posready-2009/posready-vs-xp-pro/ it seems to be pretty similar except for a few additionally supported POS-specific applications, most components of the standard desktop system are available either by default or as options.

Doesn't really seem to be something I'd be too worried about, I'd still prefer to just run regular desktop SP3 or MCE with the hack just for the autism myself, most of the P4-class hardware I'd run XP on in the first place isn't really going to suffer from the little bit of additonal load that comes with it.

>>53917392
That shit's pretty hole-laden, I wouldn't use it if I could help it. It seems they are offered on POSready though as an optional addition.

>>53917543
It says it's not supported, but what would stop it from installing?
>>
>>53911590
>Boots almost as fast from HDD as Windows 7/8/10 boots from SSD

Bullshit. I can slap an SSD in any remotely modern system, even something like 4 years old, and Windows 10 will boot in like 3 seconds. It takes longer for me to enter my fucking login password.
