If you need to ask, you shouldn't be anywhere near servers.

Depends on the services running

Fuck that, use a NAS/SAN and NFS

Windows/Exchange

Ubuntu honestly in a home environment. It's perfectly stable and you don't need a 10 year release cycle like Debian plus it just werks.

What are the differences between freeBSD and openBSD?
>>
BUMPER
>>
>>53909700
No.
>>
>>53910310
free has better performance, open is more secure
>>
>>53910310
OpenBSD is supposed to be more secure because it runs on a tinier codebase (meaning less errors to exploit). It's really shit for performance though, even with the smaller codebase.
>>
>>53910310
Both have codebases who make linux look like was coded by monkeys. Open is the most beautiful

Too kek

Don't go Ubuntu for a professional server.
You end up getting your applications from git/ppas because the Ubuntu will only give you security patches, not the newest version.
And when the ppa disappear Ubuntu will just downgrade your application.
Unless the software stack you want to run is coming from canonical, don't use Ubuntu.

OpenBSD, handing mail is a dirty job.

Linux for performance
BSD for safety

The average pretend sysadmin on /g/ using a shitbox PowerEdge or Optiplex in the corner of his bedroom to enhance his mindless media consumption and blog on /g/ doesn't do anything where platform choice is truly significant.

Same as production server because you do not want the two envs to diverge.
>Production Server?
RHEL or Windows Server 2016.
>File/Mail Server?
Windows Server 2016, especially if you need AD (you do if you're an enterprise).
>>
>>53911203
Are there still actual deployments of VMS in corporate environments like that?

RedHat Enterprise Linux now that .NET is shipping as part of it, AND it's available on Azure.

> Production Server?
For what applications? A database? Something like ConnectWise or LabTech?

This highly depends on the application.

If you're not working on it remotely get a NAS, otherwise Debian.
