No k CPU but z97 board. You might want to fix that to save money by either going to a cheaper chipset or get a 4690k IR something. Also I wouldn't recommend getting a 970 right now with the next gen coming out in about 2 months. I would check local Craigslist or something and try to find a cheaper decent card.

thanks for your input anon

I've been gaming from a similar build. K CPU. It's pretty good. Nvidia cards work well with Linux drivers if you ever want to dual boot.

Gtx 970 is a bad gpu. Corsair 500r is a great case with great air flow though. Lots of room to build in.

Cpu choice is good, but it's not overclockable, so just use the included stock heatsink storage is fine. Psu is overkill but w/e your money.

get 16gig of ram to be future proof. game are starting to us 7 gig of ram at the moment. you'll never need more after that.

I don't know. I'm used to having optical drives on computers that I use so I figured it was a good idea to add one.

Will an i5 4th or 6th generation bottleneck a r9 380/gtx 960? How come we see those benchmarks in which the i7 provide some advantage over less powerfull processors if these games are not cpu bound?

get a better cpu and the 2 gb version of that card. I have it and I never go over 2 gigs of VRAM.

I was just wondering if you think you need one then get it but i can't even remember the last time i needed to use an optical drive.

Is it worth getting an aftermarket cooler for an i5-6500? I've heard that the stock cooler is actually very quiet unless you're running an overclocked 6600k or something.

are there other viable ways to install os other than an optical drive?
to be honest, this is my first build
>>
So all I really need left is a graphics card.

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3
CPU: Intel Core i5 2500 3.30 Ghz

I'm thinking of upgrading both my mobo and my cpu. But if not, what gpu would you recommend?

>>
>>53910876
Why 16 gigs of ram? meme alert.
An ssd is a luxury, not a must-have item.
Cpu should be changed. Get a used one if money's an issue.
Stick to the reference cpu cooler if you get a non overclockable one.
>>
>>53910881
Yeah now all i do is install via usb just buy a cheap 16gb or 32gb flash drive and use the free windows program to make it a bootable flash drive with your choice of windows iso.

1080p
>>
>>53910894
depending on your needs if your thinking between a gtx 970 or r9 390 go with the r9. But its really your choice. I would go with an amd card if your on a budget.
>>
>>53910926
is 16 gigs that much of a meme, where would it make a noticeable difference?
what about that specific ssd? should i go for a samsung evo series one?
Intel or AMD? I really dont want to buy any used items.
>>
>>53910987
Unless you are doing video editing or something super intensive or vms you really only need 8gb of ram. Samsung makes some of the best ssds I would go with the newest evo series. If your on a budget for your cpu Amd otherwise go with Intel either the I5 or I7.
>>
>>53911014
Or if you use chrome with a bunch of tabs/extensions

I use around 9-13GB regularly depending on what else i'm doing.
>>
>>53909290
Gaming? Use a r 9 380 instead. There's also a website that you can get legit windows keys for like $30. I don't remember what it's called but check the YouTube channel Paul's Hardware. Fairly recent video.
>>
>>53905811
Think about these things before you start a build
>How much money am I willing to spend?
Will dictate the overall quality of your build, purchasing a possessor that expensive without knowing if you'll be using CPU intensive applications or knowing how to overclock it will be a complete waste of money. Set a budget, it'll make the whole process simpler.
>What games would I like to play? And at what graphical fidelity?
This will probably indicate what kind of GPU you'll be getting. Some games work better with Nvidia and some work better with AMD, do some research.
>Will I be doing more than gaming? (Video editing, 3D modeling, graphic design, streaming, etc)
If the answer is yes then you may want a decent processor, but if you'll just be gaming an i5 will do just fine.
>Do I care about loading times?
If your answer is yes then you should invest into an SSD for either a primary or secondary drive for just your games.
>How much space around my desk do I have for a case?
This will determine the size of the case, motherboard, cooling options and possibly graphics card.
>What kind of display would I like?
Do you want a high framerate monitor or a high resolution monitor? There are definitely monitors that are capable of both, but prioritizing one will save you some money.
>Speakers or a headset?
Please get studio headphones, do not fall for "gamer" headsets. If you want a mic with your headphones get a Blue Snowball.
>Mechanical keyboard?
Look into different switches, good beginner switches are MX blues or MX browns. MX reds are "for gamers" but most beginners won't be able to distinguish a linear switch from a membrane.
>Mouse?
Wired or wireless? How many extra buttons do you need on it?
>Do I care about aesthetics?
This also takes into account how much you're spending, most affordable components don't look all that great, but this will determine if you care about matching colors, LEDs, etc.
>>
>>53905811
I'm looking at your parts now:
>Don't cheap out on your power supply
If you're short on funds at LEAST get a silver rated component.
>Poo fans
You won't be overclocking this processor so buying this cooler is throwing away your money. Swap that out for a 212 evo or similar and invest the difference in your PSU.
>No planned peripherals
Don't forget to factor your peripherals into your budget. A monitor, mouse, keyboard, headphones/speakers are all important to consider.
>>
>>53911768
>purchasing a possessor that expensive without knowing if you'll be using CPU intensive applications or knowing how to overclock it will be a complete waste of money.
Sorry, copy-pasted from another thread from the other day. the i5 4690 you have planned is fine, just pair it with an appropriate motherboard

The very first line of your post (after "Hello World") should be your budget. Period. And, how tight you have to adhere to it. None of the advice in this thread means shit if you have a budget limit, and the choice of an i5, non-K edition immediately indicates some limit.

Noctua makes great CPU coolers, but you can get other brands just as good for cheaper, if you want to shop & your budget is tight. If you are not overclocking, youdon't need a meme brand cooler at premium price. Google Raijintek and shop for price on sale that meets your specs, or just go with a 212 EVO. Make sure your case has clearance, some bloacks are tall, and read reviews to make sure the model doesn't have issues clearing your RAM.

Mobo doesn't have to have "GAYMEMEING" in the model name to meet your specs. If you're not overclocking, don't waste cash on that capacity. This is a good time to make a decision on overclocking, and will you ever do it. If you want maximum performance for the money you spend, you will want to overclock ... your CPU and your GPU and maybe even see if you can bump you RAM after you get everything else stable.

Don't ask us about overclocking here. Go to overclock.net and start reading. Google for overclocking forums, there are several of them and those communities live and breath that shit, so go there for overclocking becuase you will have access to hundreds of people who are pro level with that shit, as opposed to a dozen trolls in /g/.

RAM -- you should be looking at DDR4 RAM and motherboards that support it. You probably want to run 2400 MHz RAM or higher. 8 GB is plenty, unless you're into something specialty (video editing, multiple VMs, etc.) that require lots of RAM. Learn what timings mean and evaluate your RAM for low timing numbers to get the best performance out of whatever you end up getting.

-- CT'D --
>>
>>53911955

Storage: is a term for a multiple terabyte HDD. If you have the cash, get a WD Black 2 TB HDD for very fast storage. Learn how to evaluate and break in your HDD when you receive it (low-level format, full surface scan, what are good & bad SMART data so you know if it arrives borked).

You want an SSD for your main OS drive. Don't listen to the stupid cunts in thuis topic telling you they are a "meme." Those cunts don't even know what the word "meme" means; it's a word they've heard and they think it makes them sound important.

If you have money, Samsung 850 Pro 256 GB for your main system. 512 GB if you have a shit-ton of modern gaymemes. If you're on a budget, Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB or Crucial MX200 (NOT BX). There are other options, but you really can't go wrong with those. The main reason to go w/ SS 850 Pro edition is reliability rather than any speed difference you'll notice.

For the money of a GTX 970, you can do better performance-wise under Windows for gaymemes. Ideally a r9 390x if you can scrape that cash together, or r9 390 and overclock it to stock 390x performance. If you need non-windows (linux, whatevs), then you need Nvidea for least pain. For 1080 gaymeming on a budget, just get a superior GTX 960 with stock clock around 1280-1300 and OC it up to ~1400. If you're in that budget range, an r9 380 will do nicely, and learn to overclock it safely.

Get wahtever case. I've no fucks to give about case; I hate faggoty meme cases with big shiny brand memes on them, just give me a black, full tower every time and I can mod it for any ventillation it lacks.
>>
>>53911968

Make sure the case has airflow. Ideally you want over 100 CFM passing through it, and learn how not to be retarded on the internal layout to screw your airflow around critical componants. Two 140 MM fans pushing ~70-75 CFM each per specification will be reasonably quiet and push at least 100 CFM actual air into the case. You can let the case vent naturally, or add another fan to assist in pulling air out.

PSU: 620 watts is overpowered, but not crazy so for you (especially if you do some overclocking). You could get by with a 550 if you want to shave the budget and don't intend to do anything crazy, like dual GPUs or mad overclocking. If you're feeling rich and care about heat & electricity, look for a platinum grade 600 watt. If you find a gold cert 600-650 watt, you're in fine. EVGA and Seasonic are at least as solid as Antec, Seasonic is usually more expensive and significantly better. Make sure you have appropriate and enough connectors; a number of the cheaper on pull retarded shit like only 4 or 5 SATA power connectors. I like having 8 and 4-6 molex, which usually means I end up with a couple unused, but better than not enough.

Optical drive: Asus makes excellent bluray & DVD burners. It's a viable alternative to LG, get whichever is cheaper when you buy. If you think you'll put heavy use on DVDs, consider a second optical DVD burner & use your bluray burner more exclusively for blurays. Often you can get an ASUS DVD burner for $13-$15, which can be worth it if you will burn/rip/play a lot of CDs &/or DVDs. these use minimal power, so if your PSU is short on connnecters & you decide on two optical drives, you can get a Y-splitter to power both optical drives off one power feed

Opreating system: find and pirate a Win 7 Pro. Finding one that isn't hackware is not that difficult (go to kat.cr or demonoid.pw and search, read feedback). It really doesn't matter, because you're goiong to install it, get your drivers and basic configuration all in place (using only your SSD), then take the Win10 upgrade path and get Win10 Pro, which is still botnet but has a few extra options so that you are slightly less of a rape victim every day than Win10 Home.

AFTER the "upgrade" to Win10, you will be a legit Win10 license holder FOR ONLY the machine you've built (basically, the motherboard). Use that key to completely wipe your "upgraded" system from the SSD and do a completely clean install of Win10. This will eliminate any weird config problems from your pirated Win7 install ... including in case you did use a hackware version.

Now you can add in your data storage HDD to your new, clean install Win10. Now you can begin installing any software other than the OS, such as games or whatevs.

Some of these "guides" I posted are out of date, but they can lead you down the path of what questions to ask to get the more up-to-date and better ones.

Have fun.

Not OP but great tips, anon.

I currently use W8.1, it performs very well for me since it seemed to be more developed for tablets, thus making it's overhead compared to 7 a little better. How much better is W10 Pro? I don't really want to get W10 at all if possible. I can live without DX12 and DDR4 ram.

I'm also considering the same I5-4690 (non-k) processor as OP, since Microsoft won't be adding support for Skylake on older OS's after a few months.
