Would you buy one of those huge-ass and heavy workstation laptops from the early 2010s off of ebay?

The ones with the Core 2 Duos and the 17" 1920x1200 screens. Let's say you can get one for under $200.

Some of them have i5s and i7s in them, like the m6400 in the OP post.
>>
>would you buy older, slower, less efficient tech just because?

No. If it was like $50, maybe. If it is not at least Sandy bridge, it uses too much power for not enough processing capabilities for my liking.

Just save your money and get something worth a damn.

Some of them are Sandy Bridge. Plus you get a 1920x1200 IPS screen. Some of them even have a wide colour gamut.
>>
no i'd never buy a workstation computer again

Get you shit together /g/ are you really just poorfags who primarily look at price?
>>
>>53901751
>Core 2 Duo

No.

Also I can't type comfortably unless my hands are perfectly centered to the screen.
>>
>>53902207
>are you really just poorfags who primarily look at price?

I hope it didn't took you too long to realize it.
>>
>>53901751
I have that exact laptop minus the fingerprint reader, would recommend
>>53902207
i upgrade the gpu in mine to a 780m, if I wasn't too poor I could've gotten a 980m, just make sure you get one that doesnt have a shitty locked bios
>>
Had an M6600 for a year. Overheated and had build quality problems.
>>
>>53902166
You have business class laptops mixed with workstations. Some thinkpads are workstations but most are not.
>>
>>53901860
Have the 2010 model of this (8540w).
Used it almost every day since I bought it fall 2010 and it's still great, little signs of wear because full metal body and palmrests.
i7 720QM, upgraded to 16GB ram and SSD. Battery got shit after 3 years but it blows a lot of new cheap laptops out of the water.
(get that 8770 though, the 8540 had thermal problems since the beginning)

I'd say go for it
>>
That Dell looks sexy.
>>
>>53901860
>>53902377

That chiclet keyboard is garbage.
>>
>>53902302
in what laptop can you upgrade the gpu? I really want one with possibility since I only got x220 because no thinkpad on market had at the time good enough gpu so I just got light and portable machine.

if there is a business laptop that can support Quad core and 9xx series gpu without some crazy 2000$ price tag I'd really appreciate some help finding one.

Size doesn't matter.

Oh yeah son, those computers are sexy as fuck. I would get one but can't justify the purchase when my Latitude is still working fine.

>>

>>
>>53902444
If you really mind the chiclets get 8540w/p. All Elitebooks after 2010 have this keyboard. I have this and a chiclet laptop and really never understood the problem some people have with them. Chiclet accumulates much less shit underneath

They all have shitty ass trackpads though.

But when they get down to like $35 I am totally getting a nice one.

Its a fucking gimmick, theres no reason to the premium for this kind of crap. Its the UMPC meme all over again. You can buy non-workstation laptop AND wacom tablet thats both cheaper and capable of outrunning it.

Shit, I'm pretty sure I was seeing them for $600 or $700 last time I looked into it

That fucking screen is useless for drawing.

I bought a refurbished hp probook 6460b for 200 bucks as a disposable laptop for uni
With arch (no meme) it's pretty comfy

>>53902501
I didn't know commercial laptop models with two monitors existed
I was planning on building one over summer because I wanted one
that looks pretty ugly though
>>
>>53903371
>sperg out

there are some people who are into technology as a hobby. it's honestly a pretty cool laptop, though not that useable.

just like how people would love a 1970's muscle car or something, the new cars are better in literally every way, but it's just the nostalgia and uniqueness of the old cars that are so cool. no one would have that laptop as their daily driver

If I was okay with 17" laptops I'd have one as a dd right now
>>
I know were i can get a almost mint condition older model lattitude with core 2 duo for $150 but i still think thats alot to pay for an old ass laptop.

Id rather just save up and but an igoy phone or tablet.
>>
>>53901819
These were great workstations, nice screens too but they did have some weight to them.
>>
>>53903487
Dude, seriously you shouldn't be buying this. Its all a "muh uniqueness and usability" gimmick admit it. For the same price you could buy something that runs circles around this and more features. Its Apple-style inflation.
>>
>>53901751
nah, not unless it's like forty bucks with free shipping, otherwise I'd just go newegg refurbished and get a guaranteed in good working order machine with a ninety day warranty

I already did...
Elitebook 8560W - perfect for my use.
Added 4gb extra RAM as I had them in a drawer anyway. And replaced optical drive with a 500gb hdd from old laptop. Think the ssd is upgrade made by previous owner - too lazy to check what actual ssds 8560Ws were born with.
Don't buy if you value mobility though. But if you did you would not consider a workstation, would you now?
>>
What is the difference between the Elitebook and ProBook? Looks like ProBooks are cheaper and have same/similar specs.
>>
>>53901876
why do people act like old things need a reactor to run, core2 penryn chips use the same amount of power (and in general old electronics are much lighter on power consumption than their modern equivalents) while delivering about the same amount of practical performance for most applications you'd use a portable for anyway, literally have no problem going between my SB T420 and my C2D X200
>>
>>53903185
nobody bought them and they're a novelty
the dual screen and integrated tablet also probably has a lot of utility in it for some applications, it's only money in the end
>>
>>53904112
Overall build quality. You get what you pay for.
>>
>>53901751
For about 160$ I got an Atom laptop (quadcore, ~same speed as a c2d 1.6GHz)
>>
>>53904250
brand new, I mean. So, a clear "No" is my answer.
>>
>>53904158
Except there is 17W 3317U can out run any 17W C2S or CD2
>>
>>53902495
MXM is a common standard for this shit, only issue is some bioses have whitelists. I think Dell is pretty good for that shit. Most sandybridge or older have a normal socket for cpus too.
>>
>>53902229
>Also I can't type comfortably unless my hands are perfectly centered to the screen.

You are a fucking faggot.
>>
>>53904288
you're not wrong at all, but in the end, what does that amount to, a few milliseconds worth of delays in select cases? later core2 hardware hasn't really aged all that badly, and is generally quite fine for most of the 2D "productivity"-centric tasks a laptop is best suited for in the first place
>>
>>53904250
clockspeed != power
>>
>>53905415
we all know that, but are you seriously trying to imply that a quad core atom isn't better than a c2d?
