Is there any point in buying a 980 right now or should I just wait for the 1080+ series to come during the reign of directx12?
Wait until the 1000 series come out and the 980Ti prices drop down.

Mine was new and sealed in the box, too. I'd say for it at that price even with Polaris on the horizon.
