Since Vista and 7 are EOLing very soon, lets hear your thoughts on Aero. Do you miss it or are you glad it's gone?

I remember I was a Linux user for years and had never really used Vista or 7 until our work PC's were upgraded from XP to 7 and I was just blown away by Aero. I think I spent 10 minutes just moving around the windows, looking at the glow of the dialog buttons etc. I eventually uninstalled Linux and moved over to Windows because after the experience Linux felt so cheap and shitty, haven't gone back yet.

7 is GOAT. I've already disabled updates for months now. Going to use it forever. Vista was utter garbage. Whoever's still on it needs to reevaluate their life.

I don't like Aero but custom Themes for 7 exist.

I never liked transparency or even the plain 7 theme. I had the classic theme on Win7.

What? Aren't W7 updates scheduled to tend in 2020?

The Aero looks like like it was actually made by payed artists and not some indian shitters who drew the interface in powerpoint.

Aero is awesome.

After years and years of the Fisher Price look on XP Aero was like a bucket of water dumped on the head. Windows finally looked nice.
>>
>>53893090
Yeah, 4 years. That's pretty close to soon, like xp would have been in 2010.
>>
>>53892909
Same, who would even bother with 8 or 10?
>>
I turned off Aero on my first day using Windows 7. I got over the fascination with shiny decorations after two months using Beryl.
>>

I remember moving from XP to Vista. Aero was amazing.
>>

If you're not worried about privacy, 10 seems like the way to go now when the anniversary update comes out (linux compatibility layer)

I didn't like it and I still don't. I even prefer XP's Zune theme over Aero.

"Aero" in Windows 8/8.1 is the best, Win 10 is too whitish.

So what? People can still use it.

Staying on topic, yeah, the first time I saw it I was amazed as well, I had never seen anything like it before.

but then my gpu went kaput and I had to downgrade to XP

>>
>>53892880
I got used to it. It had some bad design decisions that lead to funkiness (e.g. transparent window decorations required adding "smoke" behind text to make it stand out) but it's ok. The gr8 thing about it is the gpu acceleration which makes everything seems smooth as fuck on the desktop.

Aero was awesome, but I really love the w10 flat theme. I wish it wasn't implemented like literal shit. They should have kept there original start button and not made their os literal adware and spyware. Then it would be Goat.

Aero is one of the reasons I still use 7.

Seriously, why they had to remove it? It was so pretty.

Aero looks like utter shit. I'd much rather have a simple design with a flatter design.

8.0 > Vista SP2 > 7 > 8.1 > 10

Didn't include XP because it lacks SSD support. 8.0 is best because it has significant improvements (small but noticeable) over 7, and 8.0 is the last version before Microsoft went full NSA botnet.

Normies boohoo'd over 8.0, but honestly, just install classic start + classic shell and it's excellent.

Aero, or rather, transparency with blur is the ultimate design. It's far superior to any color. Now the window borders do look kinda crappy but that can be modded.

Back in Vista they had the most advanced and best looking ui. It even had animated wallpapers. Now we have a trend of going backwards. I wonder when, if ever we'll have design that supercedes it, and what it will be.

Yes, it was bloated. But windows 8.1 without it is just as bloated.

kinda what this guy said. although I don't hate Aero (still using 7 without transparency) I prefer the new flat colors design. It's true what they say...you can't always get what you want.

Aero's biggest flaw was always that the active window would have the X button in this big, awful, obnoxious red color. And of course there was no way of changing it, outside of using classic theme or using UX Theme whatever and downloading some garbage off some Deviantart page or blog. Or editing it yourself with resource hacker. I'm so glad Windows 10 FINALLY did away with this shit and the X doesn't turn bright red unless you mouse over it.

Window contents themselves can still be HW accelerated, but Windows won't composite with HW acceleration. Which makes dragging and redrawing windows take up a lot more CPU.

With classic theme on my i7-2600k, just dragging a window around my empty 1920x1200 desktop uses ~3-5% CPU. That's almost half of a core just to drag a window around.

>woooo we're gonna ride this rocket ship straight to market dominance!
>Expose? What? Well, okay, we'll do this shitty Flip3D thing that is completely useless. It's got visual effects, though, so it's exactly as good as Expose

The problems started with XP. They went to the XP Themed look. Except it only went one dialog deep. Then things went all shitty when Aero came around. Go two levels deep and it's still Win95 UI. Plus, they kept the old settings dialog which allowed you to set the active/inactive window titlebar color, BUT IT HAD NO EFFECT.

Fucking horrible UI, endless infighting at Microsoft, rebranding initiatives instead of innovation, and desperate attempts to check off arbitrary boxes (e.g. "has 3D effects somehow related to switching applications [i.e. Expose as an idiot would describe it]").

When they aren't busy trying to cram a desktop UI into a hand-held device (Windows CE/PocketPC), they're busy trying to force a hand-held UI onto a desktop device (Windows 8 Start Screen). And when they're not doing those, they're busy gathering endless data about you, but never actually using it to improve anything (Cortana is a joke).

Doesn't matter. "Since 7 came out" is meaningless, since there were still people upgrading from XP.

The fact is that Microsoft wasted system resources drawing completely pointless, clumsy, fat, translucent borders and people had to pay for the privilege.

Just like Microsoft Office. They came out with the ribbon bullshit because some carefully crafted study showed new users understood it quicker, and destroyed 15 years of existing business users' ingrained knowledge and habits.
