Gaymen laptops don't feature Xeons, ECC RAM, Quadro graphics cards and 10-bit displays. It may end up running a bit slower than a similarly spec'ed gaming variant, but will be solid as a tank, with enough cooling to keep it running stable for days. So who exactly is the target for this device?

Shitty resolution + Wangblows + shitty trackpad, makes it inferior to the Macbook.
It's not as cheap as the Asus Macbook clone either, so clearly not aimed at poorfags either.
The hinges ruin the design, so it's not for MUH AESTHETICS people either.

Yo dude, I'm speaking from experience, even on the mid 2015 rMBP 60fps 1080p youtube makes this thing toasty.

I think its the upscaling process.

Granted my rMBP doesnt throttle, it regularly gets up to 65/75 when watching youtube 60fps content fullscreen, and gets up to 80-90 when decoding 60fps twitch streams (resolution doesnt seem to be as much of an issue with twitch though, just frame rate)

>A college student would be better off with a more powerful laptop in the first place though.

Why? I'm a college student. I have a powerful desktop for heavy lifting, and a laptop that can do everything short of heavy photo/video editing and gaming. Between the two I've spent $1200 compared to spending a minimum $1400 on a laptop with performance even comparable to my desktop. And then I can't even upgrade it, so I have to replace it every 3-4 years, instead of changing one or two parts in my desktop while keeping my laptop until it physically breaks because it won't suddenly lose it's ability to type text and play 1080p video. In the long run, this saves me a fair chunk of change.

Please explain to me how I'd be better off with a 10 pound gaming laptop or portable workstation as compared to a powerful desktop at home and a lightweight laptop for workloads like papers and presentations where I don't need heavy hardware that guzzles battery like whores guzzle cock.

Not to mention you're not saying anything to justify having next to no ports on an ultraportable, when so many ultraportables exist with a slew of available ports to use while being barely any bigger or heavier than the Macbook, if not smaller.

Core M performance on the tasks you're going to do on an ultrabook is pretty close to i5, specially the 15W i5 most laptops use. You need to run very tasking software for a while to notice the difference between core M and i5.

>>53886822
Why are you switching to extremes like Alienware gaymer trash. Retina Macbook offers a much better performance/weight balance than any ultraportable because of the 28W SoC, and has all muh ports.

Macbook compromises the ports and performance for the optimal mobility, so rather aimed at frequent travelers or people who can work around no ports.

>when so many ultraportables exist with a slew of available ports to use while being barely any bigger or heavier than the Macbook, if not smaller.
Size wise, yeah but I don't recall any laptop with similar specs/battery life/screen that is close at weight. Pretty sure the lightest are about 300gram more, which is the weight of two fat smartphones. Besides, no ports seems like a deliberate decision by Apple to push for a wireless future. Something some users will be happy about ... and for others there is rMBP.

>>53886877
Wouldn't say CPU power is that irrelevant and the Broadwell Core M in it seems close to optimal but still not there, guess Skylake is. They were just too limited by the TDP to crack up the GPU power. It's impressive enough that they managed to put a perfectly functional, passively cooled x86 CPU in it.

>>53887049
>Windows matching Apple trackpads
Let's not go crazy. The best they could've done is a 16:10 screen.
>>
>>53884177
Looks are ultimatively a matter of taste.
Besides, I NEVER had any issues with HP laptops (got a few elitebooks and some old brick from the time when XP was the new shit) and even that cheap as fuck, at least ten years old printer works fine.
Don't blame the company if you handle your devices poorly or choose them poorly in the first place.

That may have been too strong a word, but you seem to know what I mean.

Personally I think they're approaching passive cooling the wrong way.

It can be done, but they need to realize that they're gonna need much more copper than normal to really suck that heat away from the chipset as fast as possible.

I just tried the trackpad for 5 fucking minutes and honestly I'm really fucking tempted to buy a magic trackpad. But those things ain't cheap. I see a lot of people saying that it doesn't replace the mouse for graphic design, though it's not like I don't have a mouse already.
>>
>>53887143
>graphic design

nothing replaces a good mouse+digitizing tablet for art stuff,

but Apple's trackpad is a damn good compromise.
>>
>>53887169
Yeah I know.

I'm just wondering where to put the mouse while using that thing. I suspect after getting used to it I'll only actually use the mouse for a few games and illustrator. Poor mouse. Spent 60 bucks on this thing.
>>
>>53883841

HP thinks executives are demanding Macbooks because they're thin.

* Tacky gold. Jesus Christ, only the Chinese will buy that.
* Ugly brown with gold. Yuck.
* Bizarre logo.
* No information on actual feel of keyboard, trackpad, screen quality, and heat management details.

I had a GF who bought an HP laptop. It was bulky, but fine, until you did ANYTHING. Then SHOOOOOOOOOO the fans would jump straight to 150%. Then the fans would go to (seemingly) 0%. Ten seconds later 150%. Ten more seconds 0%.

I have yet to see a PC laptop that actually gets it right. They always have some combination of:

* Awful weighting thanks to poor engineering (e.g. unused space, clumsily uneven weighting)
* Horrible hinges that flex and creak. And usually don't open up much.
* Horrible screens that are 6-bit 1366x768 on a 15", or similar (don't forget: Apple is the ONLY laptop manufacturer using 16:10 screens!)
* Awful power supplies that fling your laptop to the floor when your idiot coworker trips on the hideous power brick.
* Idiotic indicator lights for things like on-battery, WiFi on/off, sleep mode, power on, hard drive active. What the fuck? Nobody cares about all this. Give me ONE LED that indicates charging/charged and sleep mode. Just like Apple.

When their sales suck, they start adding gimmicks in a desperate bid to win a market they don't understand. Different keyboard styles ("let's try slick, black painted keys! Kids and execs love fingerprints!"), touchscreens ("kids and execs love smeared screens!"), etc.
>>

>>
>>53887079
>Why are you switching to extremes like Alienware gaymer trash. Retina Macbook offers a much better performance/weight balance than any ultraportable because of the 28W SoC, and has all muh ports.

Because a Retina Macbook costs even more than your run-of-the-mill gaymin trash laptops. So now the price disparity is even worse, and it's still a waste of money compared to my desktop and laptop.

>Size wise, yeah but I don't recall any laptop with similar specs/battery life/screen that is close at weight.
How about the one that this fucking thread is about in the first place? Try not losing your place in what this thread is about to begin with.

Either way, I'll stick with my current set up. It's cheaper, far more effective for anybody who doesn't live in a dorm or work for the US Military, and overall a better experience.
>>
>>53887143
I doubt the difference is that big compared to a decent mouse and would be personally too jewish to spend 60 bucks on it. (or even a mouse)

It's a bigger deal on a laptop because it really replaces a mouse + gestures, while other laptop trackpads make me miss the mouse.

>How about the one that this fucking thread is about in the first place?
It weights noticeably more and we have yet to confirm their battery life, besides they gain it by cheaping out on the screen. The Asus with Core M seems like a better alternative if you can live with the shitty trackpad.

I'm sorry, but once the weight drops under 3 or 4 pounds, I stop trying to convince myself that weight matters.

There's certainly a place for desktop replacements, but barring those use cases in which the user needs a lot of computing power but lacks space to keep it. Outside of that, I'd still rather have the more powerful desktop and complimentary laptop.

I'm sure you can argue for how solid the Macbook Pro is on performance for days. But in the end, it's still like a child compared to a desktop i5 and GTX 960.

What do I define as "matters"? As the point where I stop feeling a largely noticeable difference. I can feel the difference between my old 15.6" 5.5 pound laptop and my current ~3 pound laptop. I can't really feel much difference between a 13.3" Macbook (Pro or Air) and this laptop.
>>
>>53887677
The difference between 13.3 Air and Pro seems noticeable enough for me, as is the one between Air and Macbook. Not as much as when you carry it around in a backpack but simply when putting it on the table/bed. It's minimal obviously but given the rest of the specs and my intended use, minimal weight is the better deal for me and simply feels better while ports or better performance of Pro are pretty irrelevant.

Different user cases and all that.
>>
>>53887794
The difference between the 13.3" Air and Pro is noticeable. The laptop I have is somewhere between the two, at such a point that the Macbook Pro isn't that much heavier that I notice, and the Air isn't so light that I think "Wow this is heavy by comparison."

I'm personally using a Dell Chromebook 13, because it's basically a Macbook Pro for half the price.

I actually prefer this. When you're using a laptop and need multiple plugs, it's not a hassle to plus a few things in the back first.

This laptop is still shit, and let me explain why. The trackpad is absolute utter garbage. I had the opportunity to test this about 6 weeks ago when they were doing consumer testing. The keyboard feels great, but the trackpad was sticky and jittery. If you wanted to move the cursor up, you had to use the side of your thumb. if you used your index finger and did a 'push' motion, your finger would bounce around a bunch. Also, if you tried to click downward the mouse would move before the click was completed. So each time I tried to SINGLE CLICK a folder on the desktop, I'd end up dragging the folder rather than selecting it. Overall, the laptop itself was fine, but the trackpad is complete and utter garbage.

Now, I can't say that without the caveat that it was the only thing I could find wrong with the machine. The keyboard really does feel great (at least on the version we were using, and considering it was 6 weeks ago, I'm doubting they changed any hardware), probably better than any keyboard on a modern laptop. We used it in Windows 10 and it was snappy/responsive. We weren't allowed to download anything, but they had random games and common programs. I don't know the exact number, but I had greater than 30 tabs open in Chrome and didn't have any speed issues. It warmed up, but it didn't get as hot as a macbook. It's also dead silent. I mean *dead* silent.

Anyway, I started by talking about the ports on the back and ended up going into rant. Basically, the ports on the back really aren't an issue.

Alright lads, I have roughly $1500 moosebucks to spend on a laptop that I can use for class. This laptop looks fine enough but im not too sure.

The only things I need it to do are;

>Video playback

>Somewhat capable at Photoshop
(Its not a mandatory requirement but its something I like to do on the side for some extra money. I have it on my workstation at home but I would like to do some light project on the go if possible)

Right now im using a Surface RT 2 for class and it does none of what I've listed well.

Seamless web-browsing
Stutter-less video playback (YouTube, Netflix, Twitch)
and some games every here and then.

I friend of mine has a XPS 13 and it seems to do the trick but I want to know if theres something better out there for the price. I can live without doing photoshop when I out but even making small tweaks to things makes my day a little easier

>>
>>53903693
Well I'd only use it for about 6 or 7 hours a day at the most. Gaming for may 30 minutes of that time so battery doesn't seem like too big of a deal. I can always bring the charger with me if it runs out

A 960m seems like overkill but now I have a rough idea of what type of laptop im looking for. Thanks for helping
