Alright guys, I'm currently on 8.1. Forgetting the privacy issues of Windows 10 (I can get around that), which is better? 8.1 or 10? Should I take the leap and upgrade?
Sidenote - I produce music and do some light gaming, will upgrading hinder this in any way?
>which is better?
>implying windows is any good

no you can not annon, you either don't understand how bad things are, or your are trying to convince yourself that it does not matter, either way you are wrong.
Install Gentoo
10 is better (aside from forced updates)
8 is an abomination

Spybot beacon (software) - it'll change registry settings to disable whatever you ask it to without you having to manually go into the registry and change shit, or whatever.
>>53881751
I would, except I have a few programs I need that aren't compatible with Linux

You think windows will let you disable its own telemetry via the hosts file?
Bahahahahahahaha, thats cute.

No even worse, you want some third party software to change settings for you? you cant even do it yourself? okay so what will spybeacon "shut off" and how does that fix your privacy problem?
Windows 10 is better, just because UWP apps can be in windowed mode.
The Start Menu is an improvement too, along with the better looks.

It's not that, I know if I go into Windows settings and turn the privacy stuff off that in reality, it probably isn't going to turn off.
Just quickly read this, it explains it better than I could - http://betanews.com/2015/09/05/spybot-anti-beacon-quickly-closes-windows-10-privacy-holes/

from link
>Unfortunately... there's no detail on what you're disabling, and no way to toggle individual settings: it's strictly all or nothing.
Sounds great op, so you don't even know what it does but your pretty sure it will fix your problem.
Also it even says it edits the hosts file, So again you believe that windows will allow its own telemetry to be disabled via the hosts file?
>>53882091
That was an old post, there was an update for it where you can choose what you're disabling (or disable all). Assuming I'm not getting Linux, what would you say is the best choice - 8.1 or 10? 7 used to be my go to but I'm ruling it out now.
>>53881754
After tweaking nothing is wrong witg 8
>>53882162
Look if you insist on using windows thats your choice, I am just trying to keep you from fooling yourself into thinking that you will turn any tracking off.
>>53881714
Windows 7 wins performance wise and you can run AEGIS to get rid of all spyware etc.
Otherwise just go OSX/Linoox

You need Windows 7.
They're both shit but 10 is better than 8.1. Don't bother with that proprietary/closed source spybot thingy, just do these instead:

>Aegis for Windows 7/8.x - Blocks all known Microsoft spying and Windows 10 upgrade elements
Details:
Block 201 bad hosts, change windows update to check/notify (do not download/install), disable automatic delivery of internet explorer via windows update, disable ceip/gwx/skydrive(aka onedrive)/spynet/telemetry/wifisense, disable remote registry, disable 31 scheduled tasks, disable windows 10 download directory, remove diagtrack, sync time to ntp.org, hide/uninstall 50 kb updates (see below).
Wont that just make them track you more since it arouses suspicion?

If op was capable of doing that stuff he would not have made this thread in the first place.
8.1 with Start 8 is literally the best OS available.
>>53881714
Switch back to Win7.
