FreeBSD now supports 64-bit Linux binaries.

Does freeBSD respect my freedoms? Does it have RISC-V support? Can this operating system keep a borderline schizophrenic like me feeling secure and out of the prying eyes of the government and big business?
>>
>>53881694
yes
>>
>>53881694
>Does freeBSD respect my freedoms
>he asks this question when he probably knows what license it uses
>>
>>53881694
yes three (3) times
>>
As a NEET, why should I invest my time and my grocery allowance into making a FreeBSD desktop instead of OpenBSD?
>>
>>53884666
You shouldn't. OpenBSD's better for desktop use.
>>
>>53884690
Does it have x64 compat for Linux?
>>
>>53884850
No, only the IA32 version has a Linux compat layer
>>
>>53884899
Even that's gone.

It was broken for years and they decided to just throw it out. I guess they realized that when vmd and vmm will be ready that you could just run it in a virtual machine.
>>
>>53884899
They haven't even worked on it for a while.
>>
>>53884941
>>53884899
>>53884937

Well if it doesn't have Linux compat then FreeBSD is the better choice for desktop. That + Wine is good enough for most weeb shitlords.
>>
>>53884959
That's not the only factor for a desktop.
FreeBSD is primarily developed for server use while OpenBSD actually comes with Xorg ootb.
The OpenBSD devs dogfoods which is why they also have better open source graphics drivers than FreeBSD.
>>
>>53884986
>The OpenBSD devs dogfoods

What?

Do you know about PCBSD and GhostBSD? They are designed to be FreeBSD desktops. NVIDIA makes FreeBSD drivers.
>>
>>53885020
They eat their own dogfood, actually using the OS they develop on their systems.
>>
>>53885037
Okay, but that doesn't change the fact that it doesn't have a Linux compatibility layer.
>>
>>53885084
What do you even need one for? The only thing I've ever used it for is Opera 12
>>
>>53881070
how well do vidya games run on it?
i run freebsd on my laptop and servers, it plays openttd fine.
but i was wondering about the new half life or civ 5.
>>
>>53885113
Idk. I've never used OpenBSD so I don't know what kind of software I would need compatibility for, but it's handy to have.

>>53885162

It has Wine and Linux compatibility, so maybe.
>>
>>53885180
I doubt you need to worry about it. If you have a Nvidia GPU though you're stuck with FreeBSD unless you're good with software rasterization or upgrading to AMD
>>
>>53885227
AMD GPUs have a reputation for being shit on Linux. How are they on OpenBSD?
>>
>>53885304
They're your only dGPU option, I've never looked into using them though. All I can tell you is I've had no issues with a GMA iGPU nor software rasterization
>>
Am I stuck with Linux for POWER8 hardware?
>>
>>53885372
Yes, but do you play 3D gay men?
>>
>>53885412
No
>>
>>53885443
Well, then we use our computers differently.
>>
>>53885411
FreeBSD does PPC.
>>
>>53885478
Really?
>>
>>53885505
So do OpenBSD and NetBSD but that doesn't mean shit when discussing POWER
>>
>>53885548
It's listed as supported.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Architecture
>>
>>53885668
Sweet, thanks
>>
Freebsd is far more superior for desktop. You have more packages than any other BSD, which include Non free drivers for Nvidia and amd.
>>
>>53881070
Fucking finally. The only other BSD so far which can run Linux binaries besides i386 is NetBSD and maybe this will be eventually implemented in OpenBSD, too.
>>
>>53885961
>and maybe this will be eventually implemented in OpenBSD, too.
OpenBSD's not too interested in Linux compatibility. They even dropped the i386 compat layer
>>
>>53885990
Damn, now I'll never be able to play CoC on my OpenBSD install.
>>
>>53886014
QEMU
>>
>>53881070
Now it just needs ASLR
>>
>>53885020

>PC-BSD

For fuck's sake anon!
>>
>>53885961
You forget DragonflyBSD
>>
>>53887083
What's wrong with PCBSD?
>>
>>53881694
Yes:
https://wiki.freebsd.org/riscv
>>
>>53884850
No you might be better on FBSD; overall, OBSD runs smoother but it lacks things like Linux compat and virtualization.
>>
>>53889264
>it lacks things like Linux compat and virtualization
Well you're half right.
>>
>>53885020
>PCBSD
freebsd with lumina installed

>GhostBSD
openbsd, 6 months later

>>53885304
native development, highly optimized for amd64

>>53885732
nvidia cards can be a real deal breaker re: openbsd

>>53886070
this
>>
>>53884959
>freeBSD is only for weebs
lol ok
>>
>>53889333
Is the virtual machine done then? I know some guy made a rough version, then some other guys wanted to help.
>>
Has anyone run OpenBSD on a thinkpad? I am curious about an x220 with puffy's os on it, although I might be happier with a macbook.
>>
>>53891020
I've only run it on Latitudes and PowerBooks as far as laptops go, but I've heard it has great ThinkPad support
>>
>>53887186

PC-BSD is a piece of crap! Pure garbage!

The system is slow and full of bugs!
>>
>>53891077
Where are the bugs? There isn't much to PCBSD. It's just KDE and PBI and a bunch of default software.
>>
>>53889473
not enabled in the default install. maybe in the next release (this fall)
