Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

There are genuine cuckolds that use 1366x768 in twenty fucking sixteen.

You have no excuse in the current year, it's on par with watching your wife get creampied by a group of refugees and standing by idly as it happens.

Really stuck, I work in SMB IT maintenance so I am on the road a lot visiting clients troubleshooting networks etc. I am currently using an x201 dualbooted with wangblows 10 and lubuntu. I like the little thing but it has a problem with batteries, I've had 2 now and often it displays critical battery when I know it has charge because as soon as I plug the charger in it then boots and shows more than 30% charge. Anyway, that is beside the point.

I've been looking into getting the t420, the only thing that puts me off is the god awful screen, even on the 900p model, I'm looking for anecdotal experience here, is it that bad? I also looked at the x1 carbon 1st gen but that has no rj45 so that is pretty much a no no. I'd prefer something 14"-15.6" but preferably 14",

Where is the best bang for the buck in the £300 and below? I will not use 768p. Any ideas?
>>
Does anyone have any experience running OS X on the X220? I'm curious whether the clitmouse is functional, along with other stuff like wifi and sound and the battery meter.

In the end, what's the consensus on the best MWS laptops?

Factoring in price, power and mobility (The M in MWS, something most people forget about) I'd say probably the m7150 (bit cheaper than the 7710) for >$1000, with the m4800 owning the <$1000 tier.
HMs' to the Zbook15G2 (still too expensive for specs) and the P50 (Lelnovo display)

The battery of my T60p is totally rekd and only lasts 20 minutes or so on full charge.
However, I'll have to take it to college soon to do programming, and there is no permanent power source.
Which battery should I get? Any recommended model, capacity, style?
The original battery I had died withing 2 month. Then I bought a cheap 7800mAh replacement, but it died even faster. After a month it said the battery had to be exchanged, and it can only hold 30% of original charge. It also went from 100% to 0% in 10 minutes or so.
Have I just been buying shit batteries or is my Thinkpad just faulty and destroy the batteries?

It depends on what you mean by good. If you don't mind 1366x768 but a decent-ish panel (if it's the IPS panel), then the X220 and X230 are up your alleyway. Hope the extra 12mm doesn't bother you
I'm not sure what the resolution of the fagbook air is nowadays. I thought the 11.6" air was still a 1366x768 TN panel anyway - so the IPS X220/X230 would arguably have a somewhat better panel. In that case though if you're going to bend over to the anorexic and possibly ULV end of town, might as well consider an X240 or something

8800mAh 12-cell.
However, it also goes downwards and has rubber feet at the bottom, angling the keyboard slighty.

Hey guys, I'm getting a little tired of my 9 year old Pentium T2330, was checking around on craigslist, and found an X220 Tablet, i7, 8gb ram, 240gb ssd, for $250. Do I jump on that?

Also found a X220, i5, 4gb ram, 120gb ssd, for 150.
I gotta say, really want the tablet one, how is the touch stuff supported with linux? more specifically arch/gentoo? Thinking mostly along the lines of drawing stuff, I have no need for touch to work literally any where else. What do you think?

My father bought Lenovo Edge E50-80 "Thinkpad" (in quotations of course, it's plasticy consumer tier laptop) and it has 16 GB of RAM, i7-5500U, some AMD 2GB GPU and FHD screen and he paid 630 euros, which was a very good price, but it's still a lot of money for me, there's no clitmouse and the keyboard feels fucking terrible because it bends in the middle while typing. With the t42 in particular you need to force PAE to get GNU/linux to install. The CPU in the t42 supports PAE, but reports as not supporting it, so you need to add a boot flag with newer distros. Use --forcepae.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PAE

I know this because I got a t42 for $10 from my university's surplus store a few years ago and installed GNU/Linux. Sadly it is not working anymore. I loved the build quality of that laptop.
