Will you upgrade to Obongo 16.04 LST?
>>
I've been using Fedora with KDE. I tried out the Ubuntu 16.04 beta. It seems okay, but all the lenses for the dash just suck so much ass. The home lens is useless. The application lens makes it hard to browse and see what is installed. The search is awesome and clearly that's 99% of the intended use of the dash. I just think that if they are going to include lenses, that they don't make them such worthless piles of shit.
>>
>>53875701
Does KDE still crash 2 or 3 times per hour? Is it still full of bugs everywhere?
>>
>>53875755
It's been fine for me in the latest Fedora. The only major complaint I have is that KDE is still definitely a heavier DE and the startup time reflects that. It's snappy once loaded, but expect a longer splash screen while you login.
>>
>>53875849
Does that mean it's tolerable (not too many bugs) or rock solid as GNOME (which I hate, but is really polished and stable)
>>
>>53875859
For me it's been rock solid, but maybe you have a hardware combination that triggers bugs or maybe you use certain features that I don't. So just because it's rock solid for me doesn't necessarily mean it will be for you. You might try it again though if it's been a while since you last looked at KDE.
>>
>>53875701
>lenses for the dash just suck so much ass

are lenses those tabs at the bottom of the start button / ubuntu menu thing?

what are the home lenses?
>>
>>53875934
Yeah. The lenses are the little icons you see at the bottom of the dash when you click the Ubuntu menu icon. By default they have "home", "applications", and a couple other ones. I want to use the home lens as a quick launcher and pin applications to it. But NOOOOOOO. That would be too useful. Instead you get the choice to have it auto-populate with recent applications or have it completely empty. God forbid the user have a choice in customizing what programs get displayed.
>>
>>53875566
I'll try it but probably wait with install for 16.10

This. There's so many bad default configurations in Mint.
My university uses it, and for the first 6 months, they had universal xhost access enabled.
hxost +

You could ssh into any of the lab machines and not only keylog their session, but watch what they were doing, and launch applications into their xsession. (it was pretty funny to launch xeyes into their desktop session.)

The default icon pack it's so damn horrible.
>>
>>53880878
Not only the icons, everything UI related looks bad, Canonical should hire some real designers to work on their default theme and at the very least make it not look completely horrendous.

Even if replacing the default theme and icons is a non-issue, the defaults matter because anyone looking to migrate to Ubuntu will look at the screenshots with default theme and be completely turned off.

The GTK and icon theme are in the screenshot.
Other than that, it's stock.
The wallpaper was included, but here you go.

It took around 15 hours on my laptop without distcc.
Though, I installed Unity at the same time as Gentoo, so I had to compile everything, including Firefox, Chromium, LibreOffice, etc.

You have to mask a lot of packages and recompile your system with GCC 5, which is not yet the default option in Gentoo stable.
Other than that, it's fairly low maintenance unless you try to do some kind of package gymnastics.
>>
>>53886576
It's also not well documented compared to other DEs or WMs as it's neither official nor popular.
>>
>>53876792
>using a frankendebian distro

Have they fixed Nvidia-Prime v-sync, if not I'm not going to bother it.
>>
im getting really fucking sick of neo-/g/ excusing and even preferring Unity over Ubuntu flavors

just pick any fucking flavor and you'll have my ear and respect of your opinions but for the love of fucking christ stop pretending that Unity is anything but the bastard child of already mediocre DEs
>>
>>53888036
I have tried most of the commonly available WM/DE and I just find that Unity is comfy, stable, and productive.
The only thing wrong with Unity is the people that complain about it.
>>
>>53888085
Unity is the opposite of comfy and productive
it gets in your way more than any other DE. its application menu is slower and less organized than any other DE. It takes the super key function of GNOME 3 and turns it into a button that slows you down
the dock cant be removed. no, hidden is not the same thing as removed. no, moving the dock to the bottom and hiding it is not the same thing as removing it
compiz (the unity WM) is slow and inefficient as hell

if you want something productive and Stable, use GNOME
if you want something lightweight, comfy, and also stays out of your way, use XFCE or MATE

if you're retarded and like eating shit because its the easiest thing to eat, then use Unity
>>
>>53888146
>Unity is the opposite of comfy and productive
For you.

>if you're retarded and like eating shit because its the easiest thing to eat
I've used slackware before. I just like Unity.
I also fucked your mother.
>>
>>53888146
For me Unity has always been snappier and more responsive than gnome.
Also, Mutter is garbage.
>>
>>53888190
>le productivity is subjective
no, in terms of actually launching and using applications Unity is the slowest and most obtuse of the major desktop environments. That's ismply a fact. it might be easier to learn than most of them but thats why its for retards, not people who actually want a good DE

Out of all the major DEs Unity is easily the comfiest, sane defaults, stable and keyboard friendly, Unity's only fault is that it's not as customizable as KDE or Gnome.

Oh Lord...

the problem is trying to mix KDE with an almost Qt-less environment

honestly even the GTK3 DE's dont mesh well together unless they come prepackaged with the same DM
try using GNOME with Lightdm or MATE with GDM. It doesnt fucking work nicely at all.

seriously, i meme that you can just have multiple desktop environments installed and they'll work together fine isnt true. especially with configuration and settings programs all appear on every DE
>>
Why not Xubuntu, honestly?
>>
>>53875566
Yep, probably on multiple machines. My main rig usually runs Fedora with Gnome 3 at this point, but pretty much everything else is either Ubuntu with Unity, Ubuntu Gnome, or Ubuntu MATE, depending on it's purpose and it's level of available recourses. I'm the kind of guy who hops from LTS to LTS, so as I use those machines they'll be switched from 14.04 to 16.04..
