Why do open source devs do it?

I listen to idolm@ster music while coding.

Most people write open source code at work. More than 80% of Linux kernel programmers are paid by a company.

y not?

Because people without social lives or external validation need a cause to find a sense of purpose. See: every major social or cultural movement since ever

It looks pretty good on a resume

This. I get paid to work on open source projects at work

WTF??

I want a thing that doesn't exist. It's not worth the effort to monetize my stupid pet projects. I just want to build things and have fun.
>>
>>53873349
I genuinely find joy in it.
>>
>>53873349
It gets even better when you consider that devs have to pay money to get on to mobile application stores.

I do it to satisfy personal itches.

Writing boring code every day to do a stupid task because someone is paying you is entirely different to programming something you think is important when you're in the right mood. One is boring and soul-sucking, and the other is incredibly rewarding.

I'm sure people working in other areas have had similar experiences.

oh boohoo 25 bucks a year
>>
>>53874435
$25 1-time. Completely worth it IMO.
iOS app store is $99 per year lol

Paying to develop for something is cancer no matter how you put it.
>>
>>53874519
You don't have to pay single cent to develop. You have to pay to use the Google Play Store platform to distribute your applications.
>>
>>53873661
do you know what else looks good on a resume? getting paid for the jobs you have
>>
>>53874531
Not a lot of people use f-droid. Even less search for random programs. Nobody pays to put videos on YouTube either and it would die if you had to.
>>
>>53874550
Balderdash. Doing a good job does nothing to improve your resume.

The logical fallacy is strong in this one.

Most open source software is written by professionals who get paid for it (maybe,I wouldn't know)

But that does not imply most professionals get paid for writing open source software
>>
>>53874590
holding actual jobs (not an "unpaid internship") (not "i do work on fortune 500 companies' codebases for free because ~open source~) (not "i code haskell in my mom's basement for free) is good for your resume
>>
>>53874587
>it would die if you had to.
Not anymore. You have to pay to not get your video deleted by bots.
>>
>>53874587
Youtube videos can't harm anyone. There has to be some barrier of entry to prevent people from constantly flooding the store with malware.
>>
I own a software company and we have about 60% of our source as open-source, and like to open source stuff as often as possible. 100% of our projects USE open source stuff.

In short, using open source stuff and contributing back your code keeps the things you're using for free, free, alive, and quality.

Writing & publishing code as open source, if you get people to use your code, will contribute to it for the same reason, which ensures everything is quality and has extra eyes on it. When we do get contributions, its like having someone, who benefits from your work, returning the favor by making the product better.

We charge for 100% of our work (custom application development), so I dont know where you get off thinking that because something is open source & free that you cant make money on it.
>>
>>53874605
The ones who want to work writing open source software will not have any trouble finding employment to do so. Most developers don't really care.

I don't think he was trying to make some logical argument. He was just stating two separate facts.
